Control Engineering Practice
A journal of IFAC, The International Federation of Automatic Control. Control Engineering Practice strives to meet the needs of industrial practitioners and industrially related academics and researchers. It publishes papers which illustrate the direct application of control theory and its supporting tools in all possible areas of automation. As a result, the journal only contains papers which can be considered to have made significant contributions to the application of advanced control techniques. It is normally expected that practical results should be included, but where simulation only studies are available, it is necessary to demonstrate that the simulation model is representative of a genuine application. Strictly theoretical papers will find a more appropriate home in Control Engineering Practice's sister publication, Automatica. It is also expected that papers are innovative with respect to the state of the art and are sufficiently detailed for a reader to be able to duplicate the main results of the paper (supplementary material, including datasets, tables, code and any relevant interactive material can be made available and downloaded from the website). The benefits of the presented methods must be made very clear and the new techniques must be compared and contrasted with results obtained using existing methods. Moreover, a thorough analysis of failures that may happen in the design process and implementation can also be part of the paper. The scope of Control Engineering Practice matches the activities of IFAC.Papers demonstrating the contribution of automation and control in improving the performance, quality, productivity, sustainability, resource and energy efficiency, and the manageability of systems and processes for the benefit of mankind and are relevant to industrial practitioners are most welcome.Fields of applications in control and automation: •Automotive Systems •Aerospace Applications •Marine Systems •Intelligent Transportation Systems and Traffic Control •Autonomous Vehicles •Robotics •Human Machine Systems •Mechatronic Systems •Scientific Instrumentation •Micro- and Nanosystems •Fluid Power Systems •Gas Turbines and Fluid Machinery •Machine Tools •Manufacturing Technology and Production Engineering •Logistics •Power Electronics •Electrical Drives •Internet of Things •Communication Systems •Power and Energy Systems •Biomedical Engineering and Medical Applications •Biosystems and Bioprocesses •Biotechnology •Chemical Engineering •Pulp and Paper Processing •Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing •Water/Gas/Oil Reticulation Systems •Environmental Engineering •Agricultural Systems •Food Engineering •Other Emerging Control ApplicationsApplicab... methods, theories and technologies: •Modeling, Simulation and Experimental Model Validation •System Identification and Parameter Estimation •Observer Design and State Estimation •Soft Sensing •Sensor Fusion •Optimization •Adaptive and Robust Control •Learning Control •Nonlinear Control •Control of Distributed-Paramete... Engineering Geology
Engineering Geology is an international interdisciplinary journal bridging the fields of the earth sciences and engineering, particularly geological and geotechnical engineering. The focus of the journal is on geological or engineering studies that are of interest to engineering geologists, whether their initial training is in geology or civil/mining engineering. The studies published in this journal must show relevance to engineering, environmental concerns, and safety.Sample topics of interest include but are not limited to applied geomorphology and structural geology, applied geophysics and geochemistry, environmental geology and hydrogeology, land use planning, natural hazards, remote sensing techniques, soil and rock mechanics and applied geotechnical engineering.Paper types considered are original research articles, case histories, and comprehensive reviews. Case studies, in particular, should emphasize why the paper is of interest to the international readership of this journal, and/or what new or novel research or theoretical methods are being presented. The journal is intended for academic scientists, industry and applied researchers, and policy and decision makers.- ISSN: 0013-7952

Cognition
International Journal of Cognitive ScienceCognition is an international journal that publishes theoretical and experimental papers on the study of the mind. It covers a wide variety of subjects concerning all the different aspects of cognition, ranging from experimental studies of behavior and of the brain to formal analysis.Papers will be selected on the basis of their scientific quality, their degree of innovation and their unambiguous theoretical advance to the study of cognition. Paper's overall soundness of the argument and degree of empirical motivation, especially from converging sources, are more important than adherence to specific methodological principles. Studies that selectively focus on the cognitive and neural mechanisms that underlie problems with cognition in clinical populations or on purely methodological questions fall outside the scope of Cognition. Because Cognition enjoys a wide readership from many disciplines, authors should explicitly consider the general theoretical issues raised by their work and its relevance to other topics and methods. Materials should describe work done and methods used in a clear and explicit manner (allowing reproduction of the methods by others).- ISSN: 0010-0277

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules
Structure, Function and InteractionsThe International Journal of Biological Macromolecules is an established international journal of research into chemical and biological aspects of all natural macromolecules. It presents the latest findings of studies on the molecular structure and properties of proteins, macromolecular carbohydrates, glycoproteins, proteoglycans, lignins, biological poly-acids, and nucleic acids. These findings must be new and novel rather than a repeat of earlier or analogous published work. The scope includes biological activities and interactions, molecular associations, chemical and biological modifications, and functional properties. Papers on related model systems, structural conformational studies, theoretical developments and new analytical techniques are also welcome. All papers are required to focus primarily on at least one named biological macromolecule. This naming should appear in the title, the abstract and the text of the paper.Examples of papers which are not appropriate for International Journal of Biological Macromolecules include: Papers in which the biological macromolecule has not been characterized by modern analytical techniques (including molecular weight) rather than historical methods, e.g. colorimetric assaysPapers that focus on biological, physiological and pharmacological aspects of non-macromolecules attached to, or mixed with, biological macromoleculesPapers on the materials science of biocomposites in which there is no mention of any specific biological macromoleculePapers in which the structure or role of the biological macromolecule is not the major proportion of the studyRoutine studies of extraction of macromolecules without purification and characterization of the extracted moleculeApplications of macromolecules in which the structure of the macromolecule is completely unknownPapers in which the molecular weight of the biological molecule is less than five thousandPapers that are majorly about clinical studies and animal trials, in which a biological macromolecule is not the biologically active agent and/or the biological macromolecule is not the major focus of the studyPapers that focus on genes and genomes with the respective data analysis (including bioinformatics and phylogenetic analyses) without the investigation of the molecular structure of the biological macromolecule and the direct evidence of its biological function- ISSN: 0141-8130

Mathematical Social Sciences
The international, interdisciplinary journal Mathematical Social Sciences publishes original research articles, survey papers, short notes and book reviews. The journal emphasizes the unity of mathematical modelling in economics, psychology, political sciences, sociology and other social sciences.Topics of particular interest include the fundamental aspects of choice, information, and preferences (decision science) and of interaction (game theory and economic theory), the measurement of utility, welfare and inequality, the formal theories of justice and implementation, voting rules, cooperative games, fair division, cost allocation, bargaining, matching, social networks, and evolutionary and other dynamics models.Papers published by the journal are mathematically rigorous but no bounds, from above or from below, limits their technical level. All mathematical techniques may be used. The articles should be self-contained and readable by social scientists trained in mathematics.- ISSN: 0165-4896

Journal of Mathematical Economics
In the Editor's view, the formal mathematical expression of economic ideas is of vital importance to economics. Such expression can determine whether a loose economic intuition has a coherent, logical meaning. Also, a full formal development of economic ideas can itself suggest new economic concepts and intuitions. The primary objective of the Journal is to provide a forum for work in economic theory which expresses economic ideas using formal mathematical reasoning. For work to add to this primary objective, it is not sufficient that the mathematical reasoning be new and correct. The work must have real economic content. The economic ideas must be interesting and important. These ideas may pertain to any field of economics or any school of economic thought.- ISSN: 0304-4068

Games and Economic Behavior
Games and Economic Behavior (GEB) is a general-interest journal devoted to the advancement of game theory and its applications. Game theory applications cover a wide range of subjects in social, behavioral, mathematical and biological sciences, and game theoretic methodologies draw on a large variety of tools from those sciences.Publication criteria: GEB publishes general-interest papers that significantly advance the frontiers of game theory and its applications. This is a high bar, but the journal's editors are open-minded about the interpretations and trade-offs involved. For example, a paper in industrial organization that deals with corporate takeover might be of general game-theoretic interest if it contributes to our understanding of coalition formation. Similarly, the analysis of games played by computer algorithms might be relevant to modeling strategic thinking. The editors are also open-minded about the frontiers. They are happy to publish papers that, while not in currently popular areas, lead to significant new frontiers in game theory and applications. Authors are therefore encouraged to make a clear case, in the paper itself, that it meets these publication criteria. Evaluation procedure: Each paper is initially assigned by GEB's chief editor to one of the seven editors (including himself), who has final decision authority. In determining their decisions, editors consult with advisory editors and reviewers who are anonymous to the authors. The assigned editor then (non-anonymously) communicates her/his decision to the corresponding author in a decision letter, usually accompanied by one or more referees' and/or advisory editors' reports. Currently GEB publishes about 15% of the submitted papers. However, when editors decide that a submitted paper does not have a chance of meeting the journal publication criterion, they "desk-reject" the paper without going through the standard, lengthy evaluation process. About one third of the submitted papers are desk-rejected.In case of questions regarding Games and Economic Behavior or a submission, please contact [email protected].- ISSN: 0899-8256

Energy Economics
Energy Economics is the premier field journal for energy economics and energy finance. Themes include, but are not limited to, the exploitation, conversion and use of energy, markets for energy commodities and derivatives, regulation and taxation, forecasting, environment and climate, international trade, development, and monetary policy. Contributions to the journal can use a range of methods, if appropriately and rigorously applied, including but not limited to experiments, surveys, econometrics, decomposition, simulation models, equilibrium models, optimization models, and analytical models.Submitted papers must be replicable. Submitted papers are typically pre-reviewed by the editor-in-chief and the handling editor. Papers generally need two or more positive review reports to be invited for a revise-and-resubmit.... policy Energy Economics publishes an eclectic mix of papers using a wide variety of methods to shed light on a range of topics. Our replication policy reflects this, and is applied in spirit rather than to the letter. We encourage the submission of replication studies. Replication studies should reproduce the key results of the original study, replicate them and extend them in a substantive way, while explaining the differences. For econometric papers, authors should provide program(s) and data set(s), plus a readme file on how to replicate each table, graph and other result. Ideally, there will be one command to reproduce the entire paper. Use of interactive software is discouraged. The readme file should identify the software and toolboxes used. If data are proprietary, the readme file should make clear how data can be obtained. For experimental and survey-based papers, authors should provide the original instructions (plus an English translation if applicable), information about subject eligibility and selection, the raw data, and any program used to analyze the data. For analytic papers, authors should provide data and programs used for the simulations (if any). Detailed derivations and proofs should be placed in an appendix. For papers using simulation, equilibrium or optimization models, authors should provide data and programs. If data or programs are proprietary, unambiguous information on the version should be provided, plus information on how data or programs can be obtained. Small models developed in-house should be provided. For large models developed in-house, a standard version should be provided together with a detailed description of the changes made for the version used in the paper at hand. Data and programs can be provided either as an appendix to the paper or as a stable link to a website. Data files should be in machine-readable format.- ISSN: 0140-9883

Resource and Energy Economics
Resource and Energy Economics publishes theoretical and empirical papers, firmly grounded in economic theory, that advance our understanding of and provide novel insights into environmental and natural resource problems and policies broadly defined, as well as analyses of energy use and markets that link resource and environmental issues to energy.Contributions may address any problem involving economic and environmental linkages, including, but not limited to, utilization, conservation and development of the earth's natural resources (renewable and non-renewable, including critical materials); climate change mitigation and adaptation; innovation and the energy transition; pathways to sustainable growth and development; international trade and global environmental problems; non-market valuation methodology and novel applications of valuation techniques; experimental or behavioural economics pertaining to environmental and natural resources; the choice and impact of environmental policy instruments; and economic choices and/or behaviour related to energy and the environment. Also of interest are energy-related papers addressing regional or global pollution as well as the relationships between renewable and non-renewable energy sources and markets.Resource and Energy Economics is an economics journal. Hence, economic analysis is central to all papers that we publish. We are most interested in research that advances the theoretical and/or empirical understanding of natural resource and environmental economics. We do not publish studies that are limited to engineering or cost analyses, empirical analyses that document relationships between variables without identifying the theory or underlying mechanism(s) giving rise to these relationships, or localized studies without broader relevance. Papers limited to the study of prices, markets or finance are not within the scope of the journal unless the topic is linked to natural resource and environmental issues (such as energy efficiency, consumption, externalities, renewables, environmental policy, resource extraction, climate, instrument choice, welfare change, etc.). Papers that are determined by the editors to not be a good fit with the above aims and scope or are deemed to not meet the scientific standards of the journal will be returned without review.- ISSN: 0928-7655

Process Safety and Environmental Protection
Publication of the Institution of Chemical Engineers Official Journal of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering: Part BPSEP aims to be the principal international journal for publication of high quality, original papers in the branches of engineering concerned with the safety of industrial processes and the protection of the environment.Papers that deal with new developments in safety or environmental aspects, demonstrating how research results can be used in process engineering design and practice, are particularly encouraged. Experimental or theoretical research work bringing new perspectives to established principles, highlighting unsolved problems or indicating directions for future research will also be considered. The journal is especially interested in contributions that extend the boundaries of traditional engineering as well as in multidisciplinary papers.Papers related to environmental protection must take an integrated pollution control approach, demonstrating clearly that any proposed treatment method does not simply transfer pollution from one environmental medium to another, for example, from air to water or from water to solid waste. All such papers must discuss how any treatment effluents, spent adsorbents, etc., can be treated or disposed of safely, avoiding transfer of pollution to another environmental medium. For environmental protection, papers that are outside the scope are those that lack engineering aspects, including those that:use experimental techniques primarily to prepare and/or characterise various materials without considerations of process engineering design and practice;present primarily laboratory experiments of the effects of different parameters on behaviour of materials and pollutants (e.g. pH, temperature, mass of adsorbent, etc.) without further insights into the implications for engineering design and practice;focus primarily on adsorption models and curve fitting (e.g. Freundlich, Langmuir etc.); andcontain only chemical, physical and/or thermodynamic analyses.Core topic areas (Process Safety):Risk Assessment and Reliability EngineeringRisk assessment, risk management, consequence analysis, and uncertainty quantificationSupply chain risk managementCyber and physical security vulnerability assessmentRisk assessment of hydrogen-based technologiesHuman reliability analysis (HRA) and human-machine interface (HMI)Reliability predictions of integrated systems and high-temperature power electronicsIntegrity management and reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM)Technical Safety, Security and Loss PreventionFire and gas detectionFirewater systemsFunctional safety and safety integrity levels (SIL)Layer of protection analysis (LOPA)Bowtie analysisEmergency responseHAZOP and other hazard/risk identification techniquesModelling and Machine Learning MethodsApplication of machine learning methods for safetyDevelopment and analysis of AI technologySafety of AI technologyModelling liquid, gaseous, and two-phase releases and dispersionConsequenc... modelling, including: fire, explosion, toxic, eco-toxic effects and projectile impactsMethods, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD)Accident investigation and modellingChemical Toxicity and Exposure AssessmentToxic releases and exposure assessmentProcess plant health issues.Fire and ExplosionFire, combustion, and explosion phenomenaDust explosionsFire and blast protection and survivabilityHuman Factors in Design and ManagementHSE performance measurement including leading and lagging indicatorsHuman and organizational factors in safety casesHuman performance optimization by designSIMOPS (simultaneous operations)Situation... awarenessCommunicati... and risk control systemsResilience engineeringTechnical assurance and workforce trainingInherent Safety and Inherently Safer DesignHazard identificationDesign and development of new processes and equipmentMethodologi... for ranking inherent safetyRetrofitting inherently safer solutions and upgrading existing plant for improved safetyEnergy SafetyNuclear reactor protective and monitoring systemsSmall modular reactor safetyEnergy storage (e.g., metal hydride) safetyElectrochemica... system (e.g., fuel cells, batteries) safetySafety throughout the life cycle of the energy system Safety of novel energy systems (e.g., ammonia) Process pipelines security and terrorismPipeline leak detection and measurement and corrosion assessment Carbon capture and storage (CCS) and CO2 transportReaction HazardsChemical thermal stability and thermal reaction hazardsInfluence of impurities on reaction hazardsDevelopment of reactivity hazard index ranking toolsRunaway reactions, including detection and mitigationCompatibil... of chemicals involved in a chemical processIndustrial Hazards and Safety CasesMajor accident hazards ALARP and cost-benefit analysisIndustrial safety casesCase histories of incidents and lessons learned integration into design and operationsTechnical analysis of incidentsComputation... modelling to simulate actual incidentsUse of incidents in training and improvement of safety performanceIncident investigation methodologiesInciden... databases and their applicationsCore topic areas (Environmental Protection)Air pollution prevention and treatmentMethods and technologies for prevention and treatment of air pollutionAir dispersion modelling Prediction and mitigation of air pollution incidentsHealth impacts from air pollutionResource and waste managementRecovery and recycling of materials and productsEnergy from waste and alternative resourcesWaste minimisationWaste treatment technologiesWaste management: systems and processes for energy and material recovery and waste treatment; Environmental Impact Assessment Review (EIA Review) is a refereed, interdisciplinary journal serving a global audience of practitioners, policy-makers, regulators, academics and others with an interest in the field of impact assessment (IA) and management. Impact assessment is defined by the International Association for Impact Assessment (www.iaia.org) as the process of identifying the future consequences of a current or proposed action. For EIA Review, the field of IA can be related to as the assessment of impacts on or of the environment (including, for example, EIA and SEA), social (SIA), health (HIA), risk (RIA), human rights, equity, language, technology, products, etc. With current or proposed actions, the EIA Review audience assesses how best to evaluate the impacts of policies, projects, processes and products, and how best to make decisions and undertake management activities. The focus of EIA Review is on innovative theory and practice that encompasses any of the above mentioned impacts and activities. In other words, EIA Review covers the following topics (the list is not exhaustive):• Development of IA theory and concepts; • IA legislation, procedure and practice; • IA Governance; • IA Methods, for example, forecasting, indicators, systems-based approaches, ecosystem services assessment, cost benefit analysis, algorithms, network-based approaches, among others; • Life Cycle Assessment, Carbon Footprinting, Energy Analysis, Emergy Analysis, and Integrated Product Policy; • Environmental Management Systems.Despite its name EIA Review is not restricted to review articles. However, it aims to publish only contributions that are innovative, topical and coherent and submissions are judged on these criteria by one of the editors, in consultation with an international advisory board. All submissions go through a blind peer-review process using a minimum of two reviewers prior to acceptance.EIA Review does accept original research that might adopt a case study design or methodology, but it does not accept reports or descriptions solely of IA case studies that use existing methods (i.e. not innovative) in a single jurisdiction context with no wider learning points. Thus case studies are welcome where they explicitly demonstrate innovative theory or practice, and where there is a clear value to an international audience.Authors are encouraged to consider recent articles in the journal to get a sense of how the editorial team judges potential manuscripts in terms of their innovation, contribution and approach. We encourage those interested in organizing a special issue or a virtual special issue within the scope of the journal to contact the EiC or [email protected] for more information. Additionally, we encourage potential organizers to carefully review the relevant requirements in the Guide for Authors before proceeding. Please note that each special issue can only accept up to three guest editors (GEs).- ISSN: 0195-9255

Cement and Concrete Research
The aim of Cement and Concrete Research is to publish the best research on the materials science and engineering of cement, cement composites, mortars, concrete and other allied materials that incorporate cement or other mineral binders. In doing so, the journal will focus on reporting major results of research on the properties and performance of cementitious materials; novel experimental techniques; the latest analytical and modelling methods; the examination and the diagnosis of real cement and concrete structures; and the potential for improved materials. The fields which the journal aims to cover are:• Processing: Cement manufacture, admixtures, mixing, rheology and hydration. While the majority of articles will be concerned with Portland cements, we encourage articles on other mineral binders, such as alumino-silicates (often referred to as geopolymers), calcium aluminates, calcium sulfoaluminates, magnesia-based cements, as well as in a more limited way on lime and/or gypsum-based materials. • Chemical, microstructural and structural characterization of the unhydrated components and of hydrated systems including: the chemistry (structure, thermodynamics and kinetics), crystal structure, pore structure of cementitious materials, characterization techniques, and the modelling on atomistic, microstructural and structural levels. • The properties and modelling of cement and concrete, including: fundamental physical properties in both fluid and hardened state; transport, mechanical and other properties; the processes of degradation of cementitious materials; and the modelling of properties and degradation processes, as a means of predicting short-term and long-term performance, of relating a material's structure to its properties and of designing materials of improved performance, in particular with lower environmental impact. Papers dealing with corrosion will be considered provided their clearly relate to process fundamentally affected by the interplay between steel reactivity and a surrounding cementitious material. • Applications for cement, mortar and concrete keeping a clear focus on fundamental questions of materials science and engineering focus will be welcome on topics including: concrete technology, rheology control, fiber reinforcement, waste management, recycling, life cycle analysis, novel concretes and digital fabrication. The journal's principal publications are original articles containing new information, major reviews and selected papers from important conferences. Discussion of published material and rapid communications will form part of the journal where appropriate. The journal will focus on papers with a broad interest, based upon their subject area, the quality of the research, the novelty of the results and the potential for assimilation of the findings.Cement and Concrete Research is the companion title to the open access journal Cement.- ISSN: 0008-8846
