  • Infrared Physics & Technology

    • ISSN: 1350-4495
The Journal covers the entire field of infrared physics and technology: theory, experiment, application, devices and instrumentation. Infrared' is defined as covering the near, mid and far infrared (terahertz) regions from 0.75um (750nm) to 1mm (300GHz.) Submissions in the 300GHz to 100GHz region may be accepted at the editors discretion if their content is relevant to shorter wavelengths. The very near infrared, VNIR, defined as 750nm-1200nm is subject to special consideration.Where a submission utilises the VNIR alone, or in conjunction with longer wavelengths and uses typically `infrared? technology such as InGaAs detectors, it is in scope.Where a submission utilises the VNIR and shorter wavelengths in the visible, and uses typically visible region technology such as silicon detectors, it is unlikely to be appropriate to this Journal. Submissions must be primarily concerned with and directly relevant to this spectral region. Its core topics can be summarized as the generation, propagation and detection, of infrared radiation; the associated optics, materials and devices; and its use in all fields of science, industry, engineering and medicine. When applying infrared technology to other fields, authors should pay particular attention to emphasizing the key role of infrared.Infrared techniques occur in many different fields, notably spectroscopy and interferometry; material characterization and processing; atmospheric physics, astronomy and space research. Scientific aspects include lasers, quantum optics, quantum electronics, image processing and semiconductor physics. Some important applications are medical diagnostics and treatment, industrial inspection and environmental monitoring.A fuller though not exhaustive list of topics would include: Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space ResearchAtmospheric transmission, turbulence and scatteringBiomedical and Medical applicationsCultural heritageEnvironmenta... applications: pollution and monitoringDetectors: quantum and thermalImage processingIndustrial applicationsInfrared lasers including free electron lasersMaterial properties, processing and characterizationNon-... testing, active and passive.• Optical elements: lenses, polarizers, filters, mirrors, fibres, etc.Radiometry: techniques, calibration, standards and instrumentationRemot... sensing and range-findingSolid-s... physicsThermal imaging: device design, testing and applicationsSynchrot... radiation in the infraredAuthors may indicate opposed reviewers in the submission system if they believe there may be a conflict of interest.During submission, please suggest at least one and a maximum of five potential reviewers. You are strongly encouraged to submit recommendations for appropriately senior and knowledgeable referees having no connection to your work and not located at your institution, as this may speed up the processing of your manuscript. The editorial office may not use your suggestions, but they are greatly appreciated. Where the author works in a country with a small community of research workers in his or her field, it is highly desirable that at least two of the suggested referees are from another country. To be suitable for submission to this Journal, manuscripts should advance the field of Infrared Physics and Technology. Their target audience should be those working in the field of Infrared Physics and Technology. Papers using infrared methods, such as FTIR spectroscopy or thermography, in an essentially routine way to advance some other field, and of interest to other readerships, and generally not suited to this Journal. The Journal does include within its scope genuinely new applications of established infrared methods. In the field of medical applications such as the detection of breast cancer or diabetic pathology, submissions to IRPT should normally include advances in hardware or data collection protocols etc. Such studies are required to have adequate sized and well characterized cohorts. Clinical studies using standard equipment are generally not within the scope of the Journal. Similarly in the fields of hyperspectral imaging and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy application of standard hardware and signal processing methods to a different agricultural product etc does not normally fall within our scope, whereas novel hardware or signal processing does. Particularly for applications in the NIR spectral range, authors should emphasize the novelty of their work. The Journal publishes experimentally validated research. Purely computational or analytical studies (e.g., computer modelling, numerical simulation, analytical calculation) are considered solely in exceptional circumstances and when supported by compelling reasons. The Journal only publishes papers which are purely based on computer modelling without support from experimental results in exceptional circumstances when there is a clear reason to do so. These might, for example, include comparative studies of designs for large pieces of equipment such as satellites, FELs etc.Papers on advances in modelling techniques, appropriately validated, are welcome.
  • Journal of Water Process Engineering

    • ISSN: 2214-7144
AimsThe Journal of Water Process Engineering (JWPE) aspires to be the leading international platform for the dissemination of high-impact research on sustainable engineering solutions for water and wastewater treatment processes. It publishes rigorously peer-reviewed articles from researchers and practitioners actively engaged in the development and discovery of cost-effective technologies and engineering strategies in water and wastewater treatment. JWPE is fully aligned with and committed to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly “SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation."ScopeWat... process engineering involves the understanding and application of fundamental scientific principles to transform raw or wastewater sources into valuable products that benefit society while operating across laboratory, pilot, or full industrial scales. These valuable products include clean water, energy, and various resources. JWPE focuses on the design, operation, control, modelling, optimization, and intensification of processes relevant to water and wastewater treatment.Research that emphasizes the engineered applications and practices of water and wastewater treatment processes, as opposed to studies focused primarily on fundamental scientific principles or materials development, is particularly valued. JWPE encourages submissions of high-quality research articles and state-of-the-art reviews from both academic and industrial researchers and technologists. Given that water processing largely involves the efficient removal and detoxification of contaminants in various forms (soluble, colloidal, or suspended; inorganic or organic; degradable or refractory), applicable technologies can generally be classified into the main categories of chemical conversion, physical separation, and biological degradation. These processes are conducted within various reactors and systems, which must be carefully designed, optimized, operated and controlled, making these aspects another integral part of water process engineering. In addition, the development of water technologies and systems is increasingly integrated with sensing and monitoring tools, which should also be addressed within the scope of JWPE. As global challenges such as the energy/resource crisis and climate change become more pressing, the concept of “wastewater as a resource” has gained widespread recognition, and maximizing resource recovery is now a critical objective in water processing.Based on these considerations, JWPE welcomes submissions in the following areas of interest: Chemical and Catalytic Conversion ProcessesThis category encompasses processes for converting dissolved refractory contaminants and toxicants into mineralized and/or non-toxic substances through chemical and catalytic mechanisms:Advanced oxidation using novel oxidizing agentsPhotocatalysis employing innovative catalysts and light sourcesElectrochemic... processes (e.g., electrocatalysis, electrooxidation, electro-crystallizat... and non-catalytic processes associated with acoustic, cavitation, microwave, and plasma applicationsWater disinfection using novel disinfectants and methodsChemical digestion and precipitation Other emerging technologies and processes for chemical/catalytic conversionSeparation and Extraction ProcessesThis category focuses on the physical and physicochemical separation/extractio... of soluble, colloidal, and suspended contaminants from water and wastewater: Coagulation using novel coagulants/flocculan... and methodsEnhancement of physical separation processes (e.g., sedimentation, flotation, media filtration, centrifugation, decantation)Membrane filtration processes, including pressure-driven and osmotically-driven membranes Membrane reactors/contactors (e.g., membrane bioreactor, reactors/contactors using photocatalytic or electrocatalytic membranes, and membrane distillation)Adsorpt... and ion exchangeThermal extraction/distillat... for volatile substances extractionOther emerging technologies and processes for separation and extractionBiological and Ecological Processes This category addresses processes for the removal of biodegradable contaminants via biological and ecological methods:Enhancement of conventional biological processes (e.g., aerobic and anaerobic bioreactions, biofiltration)Biolog... processes for enhanced nutrient removalAnaerobic digestion for sludge disposalApplication of novel biotechnologies (e.g., microbial, fungal, molecular genetics) in water processingConstructe... wetlands for water treatmentBioremediat... for water environmental restorationEnhanceme... of ecological functions for water quality improvementOther emerging biological/ecologica... technologies and process hybridizationProcess Automation, Modelling, and OptimizationAdvanced process automation and control systemsIntegration of robotics and automated systems with water systemsModelling and optimisation of water processes and water systemsApplication of machine learning and advanced algorithms for process control & optimisationGreenhou... gas emissions modelling and control in water processesNovel methods for industrial benchmarking and reporting in water systemsEnergetics and life cycle assessments for water processesWater-energ... nexus: optimisation of coupled water and energy systemsNet zero: new technologies, management strategies and policiesSensing, Monitoring and Emerging TechnologiesSensing technologies for detecting chemical and biological contaminants in water systemsNovel sensing and analytical technologies for emerging contaminants (e.g., microplastics, pharmaceuticals, PFAS)Novel technologies and approaches for water process monitoringEdge computing and IoT-enabled water monitoring systemsDevelopment and application of digital twins for water systemsData-driven predictive maintenance and fault detection in water processingAI-powered tools for real-time water quality prediction and decision-makingWater system digitization, big data analytics, and informaticsDisruptiv... technologies for water systems monitoring and managementProcesses for Resource Recovery and ValorisationThis category covers novel processes and technologies aimed at enhancing resource recovery and valorisation from domestic and industrial wastewater:Energy recovery and production from wastewaterResource recovery/extraction from wastewaterOptimized sludge management for improved energy/resource recoveryValorisation of products recovered from industrial wastewaterAtmospheri... water generation and harvestingTechnologi... schemes (including case studies) for decarbonization in wastewater treatmentOther emerging technologies for resource recovery and valorisation from wastewaterAuthors are encouraged to select the most appropriate category from the six areas listed above for their submissions to JWPE, based on the primary focus of their study. In cases where the research involves hybrid technologies, authors should identify the category that best aligns with the ultimate objective of the study.Submissions related to the development and application of novel materials for water and wastewater treatment, particularly those focused on enhancing the removal of refractory pollutants and improving energy or resource recovery for large-scale or community-scale applications, are highly encouraged. Additionally, studies on emerging technologies in water process engineering that do not fall directly under the existing categories are welcome. However, authors should be mindful of specific exclusions, such as studies on desalination through thermal or membrane processes, which are not within the scope of JWPE.The journal also seeks submissions that address process engineering aspects of water sustainability, with a particular emphasis on water reclamation, reuse, and recycling, as well as energy and resource recovery from alternative sources. Studies focusing on fit-for-purpose treatment processes and technologies that aim to reduce energy and chemical consumption, minimize environmental and carbon footprints, and maximize social benefits are especially encouraged. JWPE periodically publishes “Virtual Special Issues” that explore emerging research areas. Authors should watch for "Calls for Papers" related to these hot topics. Potential contributors may contact the VSI Editor for information on the relevance of their proposed topic and check the VSI page for information. Please note that JWPE does not accept submissions based on fundamental batch studies that lack a focus on engineering applications. Common examples of unacceptable submissions include batch/static adsorption studies of model contaminants without dynamic flow studies, batch photodegradation studies involving photocatalysts modified for visible light operation without engineering application, microbiological studies without a strong connection to biological processing, and membrane fabrication research without practical application. Submissions must also include robust statistical data analysis and benchmarking of data against controls and relevant literature, as well as a thorough and ethical data analysis framework.

In determining the suitability of submitted articles for publication, particular scrutiny is placed on the degree of novelty and significance of the research and the extent it adds to existing knowledge in separation science. Applications should address cutting-edge research questions and present a certain degree of complexity. The journal discourages submissions limited to the analysis of only one or two compounds or those that are straightforward extensions of published methods to new sample matrices. Furthermore, plagiarism and inadvertent lack of citations will be scrutinized extensively, and are a reason for immediate rejection.Journal of Chromatography A applies uniform acceptance criteria to all types of submissions (Full-length Research Papers; Short Communications; Technical Notes; Concept Papers; Review article; Discussions and Tutorials), irrespective of whether these are submitted to Regular Issues, Virtual Special Issues, or Virtual Symposium Special Issues.
  • Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis

    • ISSN: 0165-2370
The Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis (JAAP) is devoted to the publication of papers dealing with innovative applications of pyrolysis processes, the characterization of products related to pyrolysis reactions, and investigations of reaction mechanism. To be considered by JAAP, a manuscript should present significant progress in these topics. The novelty must be satisfactorily argued in the cover letter. A manuscript with a cover letter to the editor not addressing the novelty is likely to be rejected without review.More specifically, the Scope of the Journal includes:Fundamental pyrolysis research on chemical substances and materials comprising: - experimental studies of pyrolysis reactions such as chemical mechanism and kinetic investigations; this includes preparative pyrolysis methods for the synthesis of novel compounds and mechanisms of high temperature reactions; - computational and theoretical studies of reaction mechanism, kinetics, and thermodynamics are acceptable, provided they are directly related to experimental data, either new or previously published, but they must be described adequately in the paper; - computational processing of pyrolysis data, such as advanced pattern recognition and principal component analysis and other multivariate analyses.Analytical pyrolysis, i.e. the characterization of a material in inert atmosphere by thermally induced degradation reactions; - exploring chemical composition and structure of materials by revealing thermal and chemical decomposition reactions leading to products fully identified by chemical and spectroscopic methods; - applications of analytical pyrolysis in environmental, biological, medical, forensic, cultural heritage, food, geochemical, polymer, and materials science; - new instrumentation and new analytical methods using pyrolysis reactions or to unravel the chemical composition of pyrolysis products.Applied pyrolysis dealing with the development of pyrolysis processes for producing valuable chemicals and/or energy carriers (gas, liquid, solid or electricity) and/or materials from fossil or renewable feedstock or waste, the recycling of materials, and the disposal of toxic substances. The manuscript must discuss the relationships between pyrolysis conditions and product characteristics. This topic includes:- various feedstock (fossil fuels, biomass, wastes, polymers, etc.) and the co-processing of different feedstock;- various thermal processes (slow and fast pyrolysis, torrefaction, carbonization, high pressure pyrolysis, catalytic pyrolysis, deoxygenation, hydropyrolysis, solvent liquefaction). The combination of a pyrolysis process with other types of treatment (mechanical, biological, or chemical) or materials characterization is within the scope of the journal only if the main focus of the manuscript is the pyrolysis process. Integrated processes combining pyrolysis reactors and products purification are welcome, if different pyrolysis conditions are studied. The computational modeling of pyrolysis reactors or processes should be related to experimental data, either new or previously published, but they must be described adequately in the paper. The pyrolysis conditions should be described thoroughly (residence times of solid and vapors, temperature distributions, etc.). The pyrolysis products must be chemically characterized. Catalysts should be physically and chemically characterized before reaction, and, when feasible analysis of catalysts after reaction is also desirable. While this may not always be possible, at least qualitative assessments should be made. The investigation of pyrolysis of a new feedstock or material with conventional methods, but without new development of the pyrolysis process is not sufficiently novel to be considered by JAAP.Review articles are invited by the Editors but may also be proposed in writing to the Review Editor. The subject of review articles should be broad enough to appeal to a wide range of readers. Discussion should be concise, but adequate. More detailed discussion may be appropriate in some cases. It is expected that reviews should be critical rather than just catalogs of published data. They should include the most important, recent advances in the topic, whereas papers of low scientific significance should be given very limited coverage.Out of the scope of JAAPThe Journal does not consider studies based on:- the activation of carbons and characterization of activated carbons;- thermal analysis, mass yields without characterization of the pyrolysis products by chemical and spectroscopic methods;- characterization and application of pyrolysis products, unless clearly related to/aimed at understanding the influence/details of pyrolysis processes and conditions;- theoretical studies, kinetic modelling etc. which are not complemented with or validated by experimental data- combustion, gasification or incineration unless specifically related to the interplay between pyrolysis and oxidation reactions.

  • Physics of Life Reviews

    • ISSN: 1571-0645
Physics of Life Reviews is an international journal appearing quarterly, that publishes review articles on physics of living systems, complex phenomena in biological systems, and related fields of artificial life, robotics, mathematical bio-semiotics, and artificial intelligent systems. This journal is a unifying force, going across the barriers between disciplines, addressing all living systems from molecules to populations and from genetics to mind and artificial systems modeling these phenomena. The journal invites reviews from actively working researchers, which are broad in scope, critical, accessible to our wide readership and addresses sometimes controversial accounts of recent progress and problems.Physics of Life Reviews intends to keep the active researcher abreast of developments on a wide range of topics by publishing timely reviews, which are more than mere literature surveys but normally less than a full monograph. Although most of the reviews will be of a specialist nature, each review should contain enough introductory material to make the main points intelligible to a non-specialist and to inspire and facilitate interdisciplinary research. "Physics" in the journal name refers to the methodology unifying all areas of physics: (1) elucidating fundamental principles, (2) developing a mathematical model, (3) making experimentally verifiable predictions. We seek reviews aspiring to this universal paradigm. The reviews should address in a clear way the most important conceptual issues in a field, review existing theories and methods with their achievements and drawbacks or difficulties versus the issues, unsolved problems addressed by a new theory, method, or approach, and why a significant progress is achieved or expected. Future research directions, remaining unsolved problems, and experimental confirmations or controversies should also be addressed.

  • Progress in Lipid Research

    • ISSN: 0163-7827
Publishing Invited ReviewsThe importance of lipids as one of the fundamental classes of biological compounds is well established. The application of our of the biochemistry, chemistry and physiology of lipids to biotechnology, the fats and oils industry and medicine have continued to expand apace. In addition new dimensions such as lipid biophysics, especially with relevance to membranes and lipoproteins, and basic liposome research and applications have been added. To cope with all these advances in knowledge a journal is needed to review recent progress in particular fields and to set current research against its historical background. Progress in Lipid Research fulfils this role. Each volume contains up-to-date surveys of special aspects of lipid research. The invited reviews are comprehensive enough to provide sufficient overview but concentrate on reporting and critically appraising the most recent data. Subjects are chosen for their timeliness or because major developments have taken place in the last few years. They include methodological reviews as well as chemical, biochemical and medical articles. All lipid compounds and derivatives are covered, ranging from fatty acids and other simple molecules, through steroids, terpenoids and phospho- or glycolipids to complex structures such as lipoproteins and biological membranes. We hope that those whose main interest is in lipid biophysics and liposome research will join as new readers, benefiting from the journal's classical aspects of lipid metabolism, lipids in signal transduction and lipid enzymology, and that current readers will benefit from the exposure to top quality research on the new aspects.PLR solely publishes review articles, and submissions are by invitation only. If you have not been invited, but would like to have a review article considered, please send your proposal to the Editorial Office (Mrs. Andy Deelen at [email protected]... thereby indicating which editor has the most appropriate expertise to handle the manuscript. Proposals must include a short abstract, proposed table of contents/chapters, a representative figure (if relevant), and a list of key references. Also provide the following information for all co-authors: affiliations, email addresses, and ORCID iDs. The number of co-authors is limited to five and each author is expected to make a substantial contribution to the writing of the manuscript. Your cover letter should include a brief description of the three most significant research papers relevant to the area of the review that are published by the authors’ research group, and an explanation of the current interest and significance to the broad readership of the journal, that is, compelling reasons why the review should be considered. If possible, please supply a timeline for submission of your article. After assessment of the proposal by the Editors, we will let you know whether it is suitable for inclusion in the journal.
  • Molecular Catalysis

    • ISSN: 2468-8231
Molecular Catalysis publishes full papers that are original, rigorous, and scholarly contributions examining the molecular and atomic aspects of catalytic activation and reaction mechanisms. The fields covered are:Heterogeneous catalysis including immobilized molecular catalystsHomogeneous catalysis including organocatalysis, organometallic catalysis and biocatalysisPhoto- and electrochemistryTheo... aspects of catalysis analyzed by computational methodsManuscripts submitted to Molecular Catalysis ideally fall into the field of chemical synthesis, i.e. the preparation of chemical compounds used as pharmaceutical building blocks, fine chemicals, commodity chemicals or as bulk chemicals (or as precursors for them).Manuscripts dealing with non-synthetic topics such as degradation reactions (e.g. photocatalysis for the degradation of dyes/pollutants), (bio)sensors or fuel cells will not be considered for publication in Molecular Catalysis.Contributi... that do not fall within the above aims and scope will be rejected at the editorial level. Examples are papers that are limited to:Routine preparation and characterization of catalytic materialsRoutine synthetic organic applications of catalysisRoutine computational studies that merely reproduces experimental dataSince the scopes of the Elsevier journals Molecular Catalysis, Applied Catalysis A: General, Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, and Catalysis Communications are complementary, an appropriate submission to each journal could be borderline, in which case the advice of another Editor will be sought, possibly redirecting the submission to either Applied Catalysis A: General, Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, or Catalysis Communications (for letters) with the author(s)'s agreement.Molecular Catalysis publishes regularly full papers; special issues on well-defined topics are published only by invitation. However, proposal from authors are welcome anytime and enquiries regarding the submission of special issues should be directed to the Editors. Any special issue should contain at least 30 articles featuring work from leading experts in the area and/or from leading institutes.Review and Perspective articles are normally published by invitation.Perspecti... are short articles covering current areas of interest for molecular catalysis audience in the form of personal accounts. The length of a published perspective ranges from 1500 to 2000 words (excluding figures, structures, photographs, schemes, tables, etc.) with at least 20 or more references.A new article format called "Ongoing Story" will focus on a still open molecular catalysis research showing the developments in the understanding by a specialist area. The length of a published "Ongoing story" ranges from 500 to 1000 words (excluding figures, structures, photographs, schemes, tables, etc.).Guidelines for catalyst characterization and reporting experimental results:Every manuscript published in Molecular Catalysis has to provide sufficient experimental detail to reproduce the experiments and calculations reported. Also, the identity of the products (especially if a new product is synthesized) has to be established together with the yield and its purity.Catalyst characterization: To establish the identity of new catalysts a precise synthesis and purification procedure is inevitable as well as sufficient spectroscopic (e.g. UV-Vis, NMR etc.), crystallographic and chromatographic identification (ideally placed into the supporting information). In case of enzyme catalysts, a detailed description and documentation (e.g. SDS-gels etc) of the enzyme preparation (such as expression system, induction, fermentation conditions, downstream processing and enzyme purification) has to be provided.Catalyst activity assays have to be described in detail (including reagents, assay conditions and activity calculations).Reacti... conditions: A detailed description of the reaction conditions comprises: solvent composition (if appropriate buffer strength, pH etc.), reaction temperature, pressure, shaking- or stirring etc. Whereas possible, the concentrations of all reagents must be given in molar concentrations. This applies in particular to time courses shown in the manuscript. Authors should refrain from showing %-conversions but rather show molar concentrations of products and starting materials. To evaluate the efficiency of a catalyst, turnover numbers and turnover frequencies (together with the conditions and equations for their calculation) should be included in the manuscript text.Statements on efficiency and/or environmental benignity: In general, authors should refrain from claims of 'efficiency' and/or environmental benignity ('greenness') unless these claims are substantiated by a quantitative comparison with a method of the state-of-the-art. Manuscripts using such terms excessively without quantitative justification will not be considered for publication.Plagiari... All manuscripts submitted to Molecular Catalysis are routinely screened with respect to originality of concept, content, and writing. It is not appropriate for an author to reuse wording from publicly available sources (including the authors' own publications) no matter if cited (or not). Manuscripts with a plagiarism level (similarity index) above 10%, including self-plagiarism will be automatically rejected at Editorial level.
  • European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry

    • ISSN: 0223-5234
EJMECH (The European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry) is a global journal that publishes studies on the main aspects of medicinal chemistry. It provides a medium for publication of original research papers and it welcomes critical review papers.A typical paper would report on the design (with or without the support of computational methods), organic synthesis, characterization and biochemical/pharmaco... evaluation of novel, potent compounds preferentially with a clear (or proven) mechanism of action and/or target. Other topics of interest are molecular aspects of drug metabolism, prodrug synthesis and drug targeting. The journal expects manuscripts to present a clear rational for a study, provide insight into the strategy and design of compounds and into the mechanism of action, and biological targets. Manuscripts reporting only computational studies are out-of-scope unless a new method (broadly applicable, validated and available to the community) is reported. Authors are kindly invited to look to published articles for the scope of the journal and the organisation of papers.
