  • Metal-Ceramic Interfaces

    Proceedings of an International Workshop
    • 1st Edition
    • M. Rühle + 3 more
    • English
As engineering materials and structures often contain a metal or metallic alloy bonded to a ceramic, the resultant interface must be able to sustain mechanical forces without failure. They also play an important role in oxidation or reduction of materials. The workshop on 'Bonding, Structure and Mechanical Properties of Metal/Ceramic Interfaces' was held in January 1989 within the Acta/Scripta Metallurgica conference series. It drew together an international collection of 70 scientists who discussed a wide range of issues related to metal-ceramic interfaces. The sessions were divided into 7 categories: structure and bonding, chemistry at interfaces, formation of interfaces, structure of interfaces, thermodynamics/atomi... of interface fracture, mechanics of interface cracks, and fracture resistance of bimaterial interfaces. Within these headings attention was paid to grain boundaries, the influence of chemical processes on the behaviour of interfaces, diffusion bonding, characterization of fracture, and crack propagation by fatigue and by stress corrosion. The book presents a useful reference source for materials scientists, physicists, chemists, and mechanical engineers who are concerned with the roles and properties of interfaces.

  • Cyclic Deformation and Fatigue of Metals

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 78
    • M. Bílý
    • English
An integral review is given in this book on the fatigue phenomenon covering the fundamentals of fatigue damage initiation, relevant factors influencing fatigue crack propagation and fatigue life, random load analysis, and simulation for theoretical and experimental fatigue life assessment. The entire chain of problems related to fatigue of metals and structural components is covered. Specifically, it describes the low-cycle plastic properties and statistically interprets the material stress reaction, examining original results of investigations on inelastic deformations under high cycle cyclic loading and correlating them with a number of use parameters. The limit states of bodies with primary defects and their resistance to fatigue crack propagation are discussed. Measurements, analysis and real-time modelling of operating loads for experimental fatigue life verification are reviewed as well as introducing some new fatigue damage accumulation hypotheses based on dissipated energy. Various operating and environmental factors of the fatigue life are analyzed, including temperature, metal structures, corrosive environment, stress-strain amplitudes and their changes, random load (strain) properties, stress gradient frequency, mean level, etc. The work is intended for all those involved in research and development in the metal, machine and structure fields.

  • Mechanics of Composite Materials

    A Unified Micromechanical Approach
    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 29
    • Jacob Aboudi
    • English
In the last decade the author has been engaged in developing a micromechanical composite model based on the study of interacting periodic cells. In this two-phase model, the inclusion is assumed to occupy a single cell whereas the matrix material occupies several surrounding cells. A prominent feature of the micromechanical method of cells is the transition from a medium, with a periodic microstructure to an equivalent homogeneous continuum which effectively represents the composite material. Of great importance is the significant advantage of the cells model in its capability to analyze elastic as well as nonelastic constituents (e.g. viscoelastic, elastoplastic and nonlinear elastic), thus forming a unified approach in the prediction of the overall behaviour of composite material. This book deals almost exclusively with this unified theory and its various applications.

  • Graphite Fluorides

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 8
    • N. Watanabe + 2 more
    • English
This volume reviews the preparation, structures, physicochemical properties and applications of graphite fluorides, mainly based on the results obtained by the authors. Their interest in graphite fluorides stemmed from research on the ``anode effect'', in electrolytic production of fluorine gas in KF.2HF melt using carbon electrodes. The formation of a thin graphite fluoride film on carbon anodes made it difficult to continue the electrolysis of KF.2HF at a high current density. To elucidate this phenomenon studies on graphite fluoride were initiated. In the course of these systematic studies, the use of graphite fluoride in high-energy batteries became successful: a new graphite fluoride (C2F)n was found; and another fluorineographite intercalation compound with ionic bonding, CxF, was synthesized. During this research it was established that CxF is closely associated with the ``anode effect''.The book will be of interest to all those involved in the study and research of graphite fluorides, particularly fluorine chemists, electrochemists, and fluorine and battery companies.
  • Inorganic Polymeric Glasses

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 15
    • Richard C. Ropp
    • English
The author describes a novel method of preparing hydrolysis-stable non-silicate glasses which is based on experimental work accomplished over the past twenty years. As such, the method is the beginning of a new approach to glass-making by the use of a molecularly-polymeri... precursor. The book elucidates the technical details required to produce such molecularly-polymeri... glasses from carefully prepared inorganic molecular monomers. Essentially, only silicate-based glasses have been known to be stable, whereas non-silicate glasses could not be attributed with such properties. Such glasses have, therefore, not found widespread usage in industry. The new phosphate glasses described here exhibit stabilities superior to many of the silicate glasses. For example, the nuclear-waste glass shows no measurable loss at all in boiling water, something entirely foreign to the zinc borosilicate glasses developed for nuclear waste encapsulation in the U.S. by Battelle-Northwest. The exceptional stability of the new glasses is achieved by selecting an inorganic compound capable of being polymerized, and then causing it to polymerize in a proper manner, in the absence of chain-stoppers. To obtain glasses equal or superior in hydrolysis stability to silicate-based systems it is imperative to employ molecular polymerization in situ, starting from carefully prepared precursors of exact stoichiometric proportion. Researchers in glass and glass properties will find this volume extremely useful and those involved in organic polymers will be intrigued by the similarities and disparities of the two systems.

The category of problems which examines the mechanical behaviour of contact regions constitutes an important branch of applied mechanics with extensive engineering applications. The results of such research can be applied to the study of mechanics of composite materials, tribology, soil-foundation interaction, mechanics of rock interfaces, modelling of damage phenomena and micro-mechanics. In classical studies, the modelling of interface responses has focussed on purely idealized forms of interface phenomena which range from frictionless contact to bonded contact, with Coulomb friction or finite friction occupying an intermediate position. Current research has attempted to improve such modelling by endowing the interface with its own characteristic constitutive responses. This research indicates the significant manner in which non linear, frictional, dilatant, hardening and softening interface constitutive responses can influence the global and local interface responses of engineering interest. The technical sessions held in New Mexico (sponsored by the Elasticity Committee of the Engineering Mechanics Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers) brought together new advances in the theoretical formulation, analysis and the application of material interface modelling to problems of engineering interest. This book contains the papers presented plus invited contributions from leading researchers.

  • The Chemistry of Non-Sag Tungsten

    • 1st Edition
    • L. Bartha + 3 more
    • English
Non-sag (NS) tungsten is a dispersion-strengthe... microalloy with elemental potassium, which is contained as microscopic bubbles in the tungsten lattice. Under working conditions in an incandescent lamp the potassium is a gas under high pressure. These gas bubbles essentially prevent the recrystallization of the tungsten wire and are responsible for the outstanding creep resistance of NS tungsten at the extremely high temperatures of a glowing lamp filament. More than 90% of NS tungsten is used for incandescent lamps. In addition, small amounts are used as defroster heating wires in automobile windshields and as heating wire coils for aluminium evaporation in metallization applications. The presented papers deal with the chemical reactions and the chemical compounds occurring along the path from tungsten raw materials to the final NS tungsten filament; a compendium of present knowledge on the different chemical aspects of NS tungsten manufacture is presented. It is composed of nine individual papers, each of them written by experts working in the field.

Emphasis is placed on materials used in VVER-type nuclear reactors: Cr-Mo-V and Cr-Ni-Mo-V steel for RPV and Zr-Nb alloys for fuel element cladding. The book is divided into 7 main chapters, with the exception of the opening one and the chapter providing a phenomenological background for the subject of radiation damage. Chapters 3-6 are devoted to RPV steels and chapters 7-9 to zirconium alloys, analysing their radiation damage structure, changes of mechanical properties due to neutron irradiation as well as factors influencing the degree of their performance degradation. The recovery of damaged materials is also discussed. Considerable attention is paid to a comparison of VVER-type and western-type light-water materials. This monograph will be of great value to postgraduate students in nuclear engineering and materials science, and for designers and research workers in nuclear energy.

    • English
This book which describes the world of metallurgical processing is influenced by a variety of factors not directly metallurgical. One major factor in all applications is materials handling. In Pyro-metallurgical processes, the processes are interconnected by materials handling systems which often require a major percentage of plant cost. The systems include sampling, storage, weighing, feeding and transporting of materials which all actively affect the performance of the metallurgical processes. Increasing productivity and improvements to plant environment demand that materials handling be improved. At the same time, sophisticated sampling and control systems are required to optimize the recipes and allow controlled reactions. By using handling technologies that accommodate both the process and the environment, sustainable improvements can be made.

    • English
Polyconjugated organic materials are revealing amorphous electrical and non-linear optical properties; this fact is opening up a whole new field of Materials Science aimed at the development of new technologies. For many years inorganic materials were studied mostly for non-linear optical properties. When organic molecules began to show larger and faster responses, both physical chemists and organic chemists became involved in understanding the physical phenomena at a molecular level, with the hope of synthesizing new and better molecular systems. The non-linear optical responses of this class of organic materials are presently attracting considerable attention as an active field of research both in academic and industrial laboratories.Due to the variety of problems and techniques involved, students and beginners with different backgrounds who approach polyconjugated materials do not find it an easy field to enter. This book introduces in a comprehensive and tutorial way the necessary concepts and relevant references which will help the reader to grasp the fundamental concepts of polyconjugated organic materials and perceive the relations between them.
