Cell Systems
Cell Systems was established in 2015 to provide a home at Cell Press for elegant work that addresses fundamental questions in systems biology. "Systems biology," as we broadly define it, is work that develops a rigorous understanding of any biological phenomenon where one plus one does not apparently equal two. Disciplines in the physical sciences have met this challenge for a long time, and we've found that our strongest papers tend to apply quantitative, inference-based approaches taken in physics, engineering, mathematics, and computer science to salient biological questions.We believe it's our responsibility to ensure that the next generation of scientists can begin their work on solid ground. Accordingly, we focus our review process on validity and scientific acuity, rather than more subjective feelings and opinions. We also believe that scientific transparency is of paramount importance. A study's structure and presentation should be candid and forthright (e.g. it should ensure fair comparisons; it should either use non-arbitrary cut-offs or clearly explained arbitrary cut-offs that do not affect outcomes; its data visualization choices should promote objective understanding; its limitations should not be obscured). Fundamentally good scientific practice also demands that studies be repeatable. We encourage authors to make their code and data FAIR, that is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable, as defined by the NIH data commons. Although it is too early to formally require that all studies we publish be FAIR, we consider that requirement annually.As editors, we hold ourselves to the same standards of transparency but also recognize that living up to those standards requires constant effort. AJHG provides a record of research and review relating to heredity in humans and to the application of genetic principles in medicine and public policy, as well as in related areas of molecular and cell biology. Topics explored by AJHG include behavioral genetics, biochemical genetics, clinical genetics, cytogenetics, dysmorphology, gene therapy, genetic counseling, genetic epidemiology, genomics, immunogenetics, molecular genetics, neurogenetics, and population genetics.AJHG welcomes submissions of articles and reports on timely subjects concerning all aspects of human genetics, including studies of model organisms that are of direct relevance to human genetics. Manuscripts should be written in a manner accessible to investigators representing diverse backgrounds in human genetics. The mission of Biophysical Journal (BJ) is to publish the highest quality work that elucidates important biological, chemical, or physical mechanisms and provides quantitative insight into fundamental problems at the molecular, cellular, and systems and whole-organism levels. Articles published in the Journal should be of general interest to quantitative biologists, regardless of their research specialty.BJ publishes original articles, letters, and perspectives on important problems in modern biophysics. The papers should be written so as to be of interest to a broad community of biophysicists. BJ welcomes experimental studies that employ quantitative physical approaches for the study of biological systems, including or spanning scales from molecule to whole organism. Experimental studies of a purely descriptive or phenomenological nature, with no theoretical or mechanistic underpinning, are not appropriate for publication in BJ. Theoretical studies should offer new insights into the understanding ofexperimental results or suggest new experimentally testable hypotheses. Articles reporting significant methodological or technological advances, which have potential to open new areas of biophysical investigation, are also suitable for publication in BJ. Papers describing improvements in accuracy or speed of existing methods or extra detail within methods described previously are not suitable for BJ.Papers are handled by an Editorial Board of more than 100 scientists who solicit reviewers with the requisite expertise. Pattern Recognition is a mature but exciting and fast developing field, which underpins developments in cognate fields such as computer vision, image processing, text and document analysis and neural networks. It is closely akin to machine learning, and also finds applications in fast emerging areas such as biometrics, bioinformatics, multimedia data analysis and most recently data science. The journal Pattern Recognition was established some 50 years ago, as the field emerged in the early years of computer science. Over the intervening years it has expanded considerably.The journal accepts papers making original contributions to the theory, methodology and application of pattern recognition in any area, provided that the context of the work is both clearly explained and grounded in the pattern recognition literature. Papers whos primary concern falls outside the pattern recognition domain and which report routine applications of it using existing or well known methods, should be directed elsewhere. The publication policy is to publish (1) new original articles that have been appropriately reviewed by competent scientific people, (2) reviews of developments in the field, and (3) pedagogical papers covering specific areas of interest in pattern recognition. Life Sciences is an international journal publishing articles that emphasize the molecular, cellular, and functional basis of therapy. The journal emphasizes the understanding of mechanism that is relevant to all aspects of human disease and translation to patients. All articles are rigorously reviewed.The Journal favors publication of full-length papers where modern scientific technologies are used to explain molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms. Articles that merely report observations are rarely accepted. Recommendations from the Declaration of Helsinki or NIH guidelines for care and use of laboratory animals must be adhered to. Articles should be written at a level accessible to readers who are non-specialists in the topic of the article themselves, but who are interested in the research.
