Journal of Aging Studies
The Journal of Aging Studies features scholarly articles offering theoretically engaged interpretations that challenge existing theory and empirical work. Articles need not deal with the field of aging as a whole, but with any defensibly relevant topic pertinent to the aging experience and related to the broad concerns and subject matter of the social and behavioral sciences and the humanities. The journal emphasizes innovation and critique - new directions in general - regardless of theoretical or methodological orientation or academic discipline. Potential contributors are strongly advised to consult recent issues of the Journal for examples of articles that fit this mission.Further information for authors. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in both higher rates of submissions to JAS and much lower reviewer acceptance rates. In light of this, we ask two things of the community. First, patience with the longer lag time from submission to notification and reviewer comments. Second, if you submit a manuscript for consideration, then we hope you will do your part if asked to review for us in the future. Thank you for your understanding and help in ensuring the peer-review process continues as efficiently and robustly as possible in these trying times.- ISSN: 0890-4065

While this may not amount to a formal 'code of conduct', these fundamental principles with respect to the authors' paper are that the paper should: i) be the authors' own original work, which has not been previously published elsewhere, ii) reflect the authors' own research and analysis and do so in a truthful and complete manner, iii) properly credit the meaningful contributions of co-authors and co-researchers, iv) not be submitted to more than one journal for consideration, and v) be appropriately placed in the context of prior and existing research. Of equal importance are ethical guidelines dealing with research methods and research funding, including issues dealing with informed consent, research subject privacy rights, conflicts of interest, and sources of funding. While it may not be possible to draft a 'code' that applies adequately to all instances and circumstances, we believe it useful to outline our expectations of authors and procedures that the Journal will employ in the event of questions concerning author conduct. With respect to conflicts of interest, the Publisher now requires authors to declare any conflicts of interest that relate to papers accepted for publication in this Journal. A conflict of interest may exist when an author or the author's institution has a financial or other relationship with other people or organizations that may inappropriately influence the author's work. A conflict can be actual or potential and full disclosure to the Journal is the safest course. All submissions to the Journal must include disclosure of all relationships that could be viewed as presenting a potential conflict of interest. The Journal may use such information as a basis for editorial decisions and may publish such disclosures if they are believed to be important to readers in judging the manuscript. A decision may be made by the Journal not to publish on the basis of the declared conflict. For more information, please refer to: https://www.elsevier...- ISSN: 1369-5274

The Journal does not publish stand alone manuscripts. If you wish to submit a theme issue topic for consideration, please contact one of the editors.- ISSN: 0169-409X

Pattern Recognition
Pattern Recognition is a mature but exciting and fast developing field, which underpins developments in cognate fields such as computer vision, image processing, text and document analysis and neural networks. It is closely akin to machine learning, and also finds applications in fast emerging areas such as biometrics, bioinformatics, multimedia data analysis and most recently data science. The journal Pattern Recognition was established some 50 years ago, as the field emerged in the early years of computer science. Over the intervening years it has expanded considerably. The journal accepts papers making original contributions to the theory, methodology and application of pattern recognition in any area, provided that the context of the work is both clearly explained and grounded in the pattern recognition literature. Papers whos primary concern falls outside the pattern recognition domain and which report routine applications of it using existing or well known methods, should be directed elsewhere. The publication policy is to publish (1) new original articles that have been appropriately reviewed by competent scientific people, (2) reviews of developments in the field, and (3) pedagogical papers covering specific areas of interest in pattern recognition. Various special issues will be organized from time to time on current topics of interest to Pattern Recognition. Submitted papers should be single column, double spaced, no less than 20 and no more than 35 (40 for a review) pages long, with numbered pages.- ISSN: 0031-3203

As such, it welcomes papers which advance the understanding, design and applications of cognitive and intelligent systems, both natural and artificial. The journal brings together a broad community studying cognition in its many facets in vivo and in silico, across the developmental spectrum, focusing on individual capacities or on entire architectures. It aims to foster debate and integrate ideas, concepts, constructs, theories, models and techniques from across different disciplines and different perspectives on human-level cognition. The scope of interest includes the study of cognitive capacities and architectures - both brain-inspired and non-brain-inspired - and the application of cognitive systems to real-world problems as far as it offers insights relevant for the understanding of cognition.Cognitive Systems Research therefore welcomes mature and cutting-edge research approaching cognition from a systems-oriented perspective, both theoretical and empirically-informed... in the form of original manuscripts, short communications, opinion articles, systematic reviews, and topical survey articles from the fields of Cognitive Science (including Philosophy of Cognitive Science), Artificial Intelligence/Compute... Science, Cognitive Robotics, Developmental Science, Psychology, and Neuroscience and Neuromorphic Engineering. Empirical studies will be considered if they are supplemented by theoretical analyses and contributions to theory development and/or computational modelling studies. Note that the journal does not publish clinical and medical papers. We also do not publish pure machine learning papers, e.g. studies proposing variants of classifiers or pure algorithmic improvements that bear no connection to cognitive systems research in the sense above.Additionally, Cognitive Systems Research plays a special role in fostering and promoting the 'BICA Challenge' to create a real-life computational equivalent of the human mind by devoting two special issues to BICA AI (Brain-Inspired Cognitive Architectures for Artificial Intelligence) related topics each year.- ISSN: 1389-0417

Food Hydrocolloids
Food Hydrocolloids publishes original and innovative research concerned with the characterisation, functional properties and applications of hydrocolloid materials used in food products. Hydrocolloids are defined as polysaccharides and proteins of commercial importance that are added to food products to control, for example, the texture, stability, rheology and sensory properties. The key focus of the research should be on the hydrocolloid additives themselves and the source and nature of the hydrocolloids should be fully described. Details of their physicochemical characteristics must be provided such that the conclusions drawn from the study can be assessed with confidence and that the work can be repeated by others. Manuscripts should clearly outline the specific aims and objectives of the research and must include a fundamental discussion of the research findings at the molecular level and their significance. Manuscripts that simply report data without providing a detailed interpretation of the results will not be accepted for publication in the journal. Studies on hydrocolloids in complex formulations should focus on their influence on the overall properties and their mechanism of action. Simple formulation development studies that primarily aim to optimize proportions of mixed ingredients and/or investigate the variation of processing parameters to enhance formulated product properties will not be considered for publication. The main areas of interest are:The application of novel biochemical, chemical and physicochemical techniques for the characterisation of hydrocolloid materialsThe rheological and thermal properties of hydrocolloids in aqueous systems including their viscosity, viscoelastic properties and gelation behaviour The influence of hydrocolloids on the microstructure, texture and organoleptic properties of complex food systemsThe use of Artificial Intelligence approaches for the prediction and rationalisation of hydrocolloid structure–function relationships, molecular interactions and functional performance in food systemsThe interfacial properties of hydrocolloids including their application in the stabilisation of dispersions, emulsions and foamsHydrocolloid interactions with small molecules and interactions in mixed hydrocolloid systems including their phase behaviour, complexation and Maillard conjugationThe film forming properties of hydrocolloids with application in edible films, coatings and active packagingThe application of hydrocolloids to control the rheology and performance of food bio-ink formulations for 3D printingThe application of hydrocolloids for the encapsulation and controlled release of probiotics and active compounds for inclusion in food formulationsThe modification of hydrocolloid functionality through chemical, biochemical and physical processesThe extraction, physicochemical characteristics and application of hydrocolloid materials from non-traditional sources with commercial potential in food systemsThe function of hydrocolloids as soluble dietary fibre and their influence on human healthManuscripts that deal with the use of hydrocolloids in medical settings such as encapsulation of drugs, wound dressings and tissue engineering together with research involving animal studies will not be considered for publication in Food Hydrocolloids. Such work would be more appropriate for publication in Food Hydrocolloids for Health. This is an open access companion Journal devoted to hydrocolloids applied in human health and nutrition. The Food Hydrocolloids Journal publishes Review articles that provide a focussed overview of the latest developments in specific hydrocolloid research areas.- ISSN: 0268-005X

Progress in Biophysics & Molecular Biology
Aims and Scope: Progress in Biophysics &Molecular Biology is an international review journal and covers the ground between the physical and biological sciences since its launch in 1950. It indicates to the physicist the great variety of unsolved problems awaiting attention in biology and medicine. The biologist and biochemist will find that this journal presents new and stimulating ideas and novel approaches to studying and influencing structural and functional properties of the living organism. This journal will be of particular interest to biophysicists, biologists, biochemists, cell physiologists, systems biologists, and molecular biologists. The purpose of the journal is to present invited, informative and critical reviews of recent advances in different aspects of biophysics and molecular biology. The Editors welcome suggestions of topics and potential authors. As the scope of Progress in Biophysics &Molecular Biology is wide and of interest to scientists in many disciplines, authors should treat their subject matter in a manner that is authoritative yet also easily comprehensible to those who are not experts in the field. Whilst the aim of the journal is primarily to publish substantial articles reviewing progress over an extensive field, review articles covering recent advances on more limited topics are also welcome. In addition, the journal publishes many Thematic Special Issues dedicated to specific areas of investigation - often linked to high-level international conferences - that contain both substantive reviews and original research papers.- ISSN: 0079-6107

Journal of Insect Physiology
Journal of Insect Physiology publishes papers on all aspects of insect physiology, and also on the physiology of other arthropods if the referees consider the work to be of general interest. We prioritise papers that test broad physiological questions or hypotheses over narrower, more focused papers. Current topical areas of interest include endocrinology, environmental physiology, neurobiology, metabolic physiology and gas exchange, nutrition and growth, reproduction, and behaviour. Papers on interactions of microbiomes with physiological processes may be appropriate. Papers on functional genomics and molecular approaches may be considered if they bear directly on physiological problems; typically these papers should contain physiological data, not just transcriptomic data and other bioinformatics approaches. Innovative methods papers are also welcomed. Review articles will be considered by invitation only and by prior arrangement with the Editors-in-Chief. Given the recent increases in the number of submissions addressing pesticides, we have adopted the following policy. Such manuscripts may be appropriate for the journal but only if they address basic physiological problems. For example, papers that examine pesticide effectiveness or measure transcriptomic changes after exposure are unlikely to be sent out for review; such papers would be better suited to journals aimed at pesticides or agriculture.- ISSN: 0022-1910

Anaerobe
Anaerobe is essential reading for those who wish to remain at the forefront of discoveries relating to life processes of strict anaerobes. The journal is multi-disciplinary, and provides a unique forum for those investigating strictly anaerobic organisms that cause infections in humans and animals, as well as anaerobes that play roles in microbiomes or environmental processes. Anaerobe will consider manuscripts on anaerobic bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists as well as bacteriophages of anaerobes.Relevant topics fall into the broad categories of:Anaerobes in human and animal diseasesAnaerobes in the microbiomeAnaerobes in the environmentAnaerobes in industrial processes (including biofuels and waste management)Microbial ecology of anaerobesClinical microbiology involving anaerobesPathogenesi... of anaerobic organisms (including their toxins)Molecular biology and genetics of anaerobesTaxonomy of anaerobesPhysiology of anaerobesPapers describing innovative methodologies, technologies and applications to investigate anaerobic microorganisms are also of interest. Manuscripts describing novel species of obligate anaerobes will be reviewed, if the description of the new species also includes information showing novel phenotypic characteristics, pathogenicity and/or unique metabolic activity within the microbiome from which it was isolated. Manuscripts describing novel anaerobic species that are only different from other related members of a genus based on genotype will not be reviewed.Manuscript types accepted (see Guide for Authors for more information):Origina... research articles Original research reports on one or more of the above listed categories. Up to 4000 words, not including a structured abstract, figures, tables and references.Short Communications Presentation of brief observations that do not warrant a full-length publication. Up to 1500 words not including abstract, figures, tables and references. Short communications should report complete datasets and not preliminary findings.Reviews and minireviews Reviews are typically 7,000 words in length including relevant tables and/or figures. Mini-reviews are typically restricted to 2,500 words in length.*New from March 1st 2023: Anaerobe no longer accepts unsolicited reviews and standalone mini-reviews. Proposals for reviews and mini-reviews within the topics mentioned above are welcome for consideration by the journal. Please provide a proposed title and detailed outline of the topic to be covered to an editor-in-chief by email.Case reports Presentation of a short report on a significant clinical observation, preceded by a minireview (up to 2500 words) of the literature describing the background of similar cases/infections, what is known about the associated microbe, and other clinically relevant information. *New from March 2023: Case Reports will only be considered in this new format.Commentaries Occasionally, Anaerobe will consider publication of commentaries on important new work in the field. Such commentaries will be invited by the editors-in-chief. Suggestions for commentaries may be emailed to an Editor-in-Chief. Unsolicited commentaries will not be considered. Please note:1. Anaerobe does not accept manuscripts on descriptive, sequence-based surveys of microbiomes, even if the environments of the sampled ecosystems select for anaerobic species. However, when studies such as these are accompanied by direct, mechanistic assays of strictly anaerobic components, they will be considered for publication. 2. Anaerobe will not consider manuscripts that deal only with descriptive accounts of the beneficial effects of potentially novel probiotic strains, unless such strains belong to strictly anaerobic species that have previously not been associated with probiotic features. Anaerobe will continue to consider manuscripts for publication that address determinations of the specific mechanism(s) of action of anaerobic probiotic strains.- ISSN: 1075-9964

International Journal for Parasitology
Sponsored by the Australian Society for ParasitologyThe International Journal for Parasitology publishes the results of original research in all aspects of basic and applied parasitology, including all the fields covered by its Specialist Editors, and ranging from parasites and host-parasite relationships of intrinsic biological interest to those of social and economic importance in human and veterinary medicine and agriculture. Original research includes the development of novel and innovative concepts and ideas, as well as experimental and observational science that raises new hypotheses. We do not publish new genome sequences and assemblies alone without new and significant insight into the biology of the parasite, the parasite-host relationship or mechanisms of pathogenesis. Because of its breadth of discipline coverage, the aims and significance of all contributions should be made clear to readers who are not expert in the particular subject of papers. In applied parasitology, it will tend to favour contributions of broader significance to the subject rather than narrow, highly specialised applications. The principal form of publication is the full length paper which contains substantial results from a major program of research. The Journal also provides a medium for the publication of shorter, but complete, papers reporting highly significant original findings, as Succinctus articles. It also publishes Thematic Issues incorporating papers on a topical theme and commissions papers with emphasis on shorter, focussed Reviews of topical issues and strategically important subjects. The Journal encourages critical comment and debate on matters of current controversy in parasitology via "Current Opinions".The International Journal for Parasitology has also launched two specialist, open access titles you are welcome to submit to:International Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and WildlifeInternationa... Cognition
International Journal of Cognitive ScienceCognition is an international journal that publishes theoretical and experimental papers on the study of the mind. It covers a wide variety of subjects concerning all the different aspects of cognition, ranging from experimental studies of behavior and of the brain to formal analysis.Papers will be selected on the basis of their scientific quality, their degree of innovation and their unambiguous theoretical advance to the study of cognition. Paper's overall soundness of the argument and degree of empirical motivation, especially from converging sources, are more important than adherence to specific methodological principles. Studies that selectively focus on the cognitive and neural mechanisms that underlie problems with cognition in clinical populations or on purely methodological questions fall outside the scope of Cognition. Because Cognition enjoys a wide readership from many disciplines, authors should explicitly consider the general theoretical issues raised by their work and its relevance to other topics and methods. Materials should describe work done and methods used in a clear and explicit manner (allowing reproduction of the methods by others).- ISSN: 0010-0277
