  • Psychopharmacological Agents

    • 1st Edition
    • October 22, 2013
    • Maxwell Gordon
    • English
Psychopharmacologica... Agents, Volume II, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in psychopharmacologica... agents. The organization of this book is generally based on a treatment of the major classes of psychopharmacologica... agents in separate chapters. To the extent allowed by the diverse nature of the subject matter, each chapter covers the history, synthesis, pharmacological activity, in vivo distribution and metabolic fate, analytical methods, and, briefly, the clinical uses of each class of psychopharmacologica... agents. This volume includes a chapter on the butyrophenones, one on miscellaneous psychopharmacologica... agents, and one on the biochemical basis of mental disease. The last named chapter is not exhaustive, but is merely meant to be illustrative of the currents of research that one finds in this field. The appendices have been used as a vehicle for collecting part of the part of the flood of reports that could not be included in either of the two volumes. Although written primarily for medicinal chemists and pharmacologists, researchers in other disciplines such as clinical investigation, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, etc., may also find material of interest here.
  • Handbook of Hydrocarbons

    • 1st Edition
    • October 22, 2013
    • S. W. Ferris
    • English
Handbook of Hydrocarbons presents tables giving the most important physical properties of all hydrocarbons whose boiling points have been recorded, in such form that all compounds boiling at or near a given value are listed together and a specific hydrocarbon can be promptly located. These ends can be best accomplished by listing each hydrocarbon in each of two tables. The order in Table A is that of the boiling points at 760 mm Hg, and other properties are also given. In Table B, the compounds are in groups of the same empirical formula and same type and are arranged within groups alphabetically by parent compound. Table C lists alternate names, including common and trivial names, and Table D gives the numbering of representative cyclic hydrocarbons. The Handbook should offer real help to any investigator who wishes either to locate the properties of a specific hydrocarbon, or to obtain a quick summary of the indications which the literature affords as to what compounds may be present in a cut of known boiling point or range. Such investigators should include academic, institutional, government and industrial workers, not only in the predominantly hydrocarbon fields such as petroleum, natural gas, shale oil, coal, and rubber, but also in the chemical, ""petrochemical,"" and plastics fields.

The book discusses the life of Feodor Lynen and his lecture on carbon dioxide fixation; the biochemical significance of the anion transporting systems of mitochondria, especially that of amino acid systems; and the possible functional roles of transport through membrane junctions. The text also describes the role of chlorotetracycline as a fluorescent chelate probe for monitoring Ca++ and Mg++ binding to biological membranes; and the effects of carcinogens and steroid hormones on the structural apparatus involved in protein synthesis and export. The nature and regulation of hexose uptake by Escherichia coli; the role of bacterial phosphotransferase system in sugar transport; and energy coupling to lactose transport in Escherichia coli are also considered. The book further tackles citrate transport by Bacillus subtilis; leucine transport in Escherichia coli; and the transport mechanism in isolated bacterial cytoplasmic membrane vesicles. Biochemists, microbiologists, pharmacologists, physiologists, and people involved in enzyme and metabolic research will find the book invaluable.
  • Medicinal Chemistry—III

Main Lectures Presented at the Third International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry
    • 1st Edition
    • October 22, 2013
    • P. Pratesi
    • English
Medicinal Chemistry–III provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of medicinal chemistry. This book discusses the mechanism of action of drugs at the molecular level. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the systems for protein biosynthesis that are classified according to their mechanism and the selective action of drugs on their reactions. This text then examines the key structure in the biosynthesis of the peptidoglycans of bacterial cell walls. Other chapters consider the enzymes that transcribe DNA synthesizing RNA, which have structural differences in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. This book discusses as well the concepts for drug screening as they have been emerged from neurochemical research. The final chapter deals with the significance of molecular orbital theory in the hands of the biologist or chemists, which lies in its ability to derive information regarding the properties of molecules. This book is a valuable resource for organic, physical, and biological chemists.

  • Alkaline Earth Hydroxides in Water and Aqueous Solutions

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 52
    • October 22, 2013
    • I. Lambert + 1 more
    • English
This volume contains evaluated data on the solubility of beryllium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, strontium hydroxide and barium hydroxide in water and in a number of electrolyte and nonelectrolyte solutions in water. The alkaline earth hydroxides can be divided into two groups depending on the hydration of the solid. First, the sparingly soluble anhydrous beryllium, magnesium and calcium hydroxides, whose freshly precipitated solids are poorly crystalline and show decreasing solubility with aging, and whose solubility in water decreases with increasing temperature. Second, the soluble strontium and barium hydroxide octahydrates that form crystalline precipitates which do not show changes in solubility on aging, and whose solubility in water increases with increasing temperature.
  • Fundamentals of Gas-Surface Interactions

Proceedings of the Symposium Held on December 14-16, 1966 at San Diego, California
    • 1st Edition
    • October 22, 2013
    • Howard Saltsburg + 2 more
    • English
Fundamentals of Gas–Surface Interactions presents the study of the surface itself and the study of the gas phase partner of the interaction in which physical or chemical transformation of the gas resulted from that interaction. This book discusses the study of the energy and momentum exchanges resulting from the gas–solid physical interaction in which either gas or solid phase properties can be measured. Organized into three parts encompassing 33 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the different sensitive physical methods for the study of surface topography, surface defects, and surface irregularities to an accuracy of a few Angstroms. This text then reviews the adsorption at very low coverage that has yielded to equilibrium analysis. Other chapters consider the measurement of surface area by adsorption and optical techniques. The final chapter deals with scattering processes including momentum and energy transfer. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.
  • Introduction to Magnetochemistry

    • 1st Edition
    • October 22, 2013
    • Alan Earnshaw
    • English
Introduction to Magnetochemistry provides an introduction to the more important aspects of magnetochemistry. The measurement of magnetic moment has been one of the most consistently useful to coordination chemists. For teaching purposes it provides a simple method of illustrating the ideas of electronic structure, and in research it can provide fundamental information about the bonding and stereochemistry of complexes. The book contains six chapters covering topics such as free atoms and ions, transition metal complexes, crystal field theory, second and third row transition metal complexes, antiferromagnetism, and spin-pairing of electrons. The final chapter describes important experimental methods and then to shows briefly the way in which the problems of interpretation may be tackled.
