      This book covers the basic topics associated with the measurement, analysis and simulation of random environmental processes which are encountered in practice when dealing with the dynamics, fatigue and reliability of structures in real environmental conditions. The treatment is self-contained and the authors have brought together and integrated the most important information relevant to this topic in order that the newcomer can see and study it as a whole. This approach should also be of interest to experienced engineers from fatigue laboratories who want to learn more about the possible methods of simulation, especially for use in real time on electrohydraulic computer-controlled loading machines.Problems of constructing a measuring system are dealt with in the first chapter. Here the authors discuss the choice of measuring conditions and locations, as well as the organization of a chain of devices for measuring and recording random environmental processes. Some experience gained from practical measurements is also presented. The recorded processes are further analysed by various methods. The choice is governed by the aims of the measurements and applications of the results. Chapter 2 is thus devoted to methods of random process evaluations for digital computers, both from the fatigue and dynamic point of view. The most important chapter is Chapter 3 as this presents a review of up-to-date methods of random process simulation with given statistical characteristics. These methods naturally follow those of random process analysis, and their results form initial data for the corresponding simulations algorithms, including occurrences of characteristic parameters of counting methods, reproduction of correlation theory characteristics and of autoregressive models. The simulation of non-stationary processes is treated in depth, taking into account their importance for practical applications and also the lack of information of this subject.The book is intended to help resolve many practical problems concerning the methods and quality of environmental process evaluation and simulation which can arise when up-to-date loading systems with computer control are being used in material, component and structural fatigue and dynamic research.

      This monograph summarizes major achievements in laser dynamics over the past three decades. The book begins with two introductory Chapters. Chapter 1 offers general considerations on quantum oscillators, formulates the requirements for the laser key elements and shows how these requirements are met in different laser systems. The second Chapter proposes the mathematical models used in semiclassical laser theory, discusses the approximations and simplifications in particular cases, and specifies the range of applicability of these models. In Chapters 3-5 attention is given primarily to the steady states and their stability, the laser behavior in the instability domain, the characteristics of regular and chaotic pulsations and the nature of their mechanisms.Chapter 6 deals with the processes in a laser, accompanying the time variance of laser parameters. Considerable attention is given to a laser response to weak, low-frequency modulation of the parameters. The problems addressed therein are resonant modulation enhancement, transition to the nonlinear regime, chaotic response to periodic impact, spike-like generation due to variation of the cavity geometry and a laser rod temperature drift.Laser behavior is subject to qualitative changes if its optical elements exhibit nonlinear properties. The action of a saturable absorber, which leads to a loss of laser stability and provides passive Q-modulation, is investigated. To a much lesser degree the researchers' attention has been attracted by other nonlinear effects such as self-focusing, e.g., which may have a strong influence on laser dynamics. All of these issues are covered in Chapter 7.The book is intended for researchers, engineers, graduate and post-graduate students majoring in quantum electronics.

Most of the dictionaries and glossaries which do exist in this field fail to cover the full range of ideas which need to be considered during an intelligent discussion of the subject. Definitions given in different sources for Production Control terms differ not only in wording, but also in many cases in the concepts which they cover.The IFIP Glossary is intended to meet this perceived need, the immediate audience for the book being IFIP WG 5.7, the working group concerned with the automation of Production Management and other related subjects.The Glossary is organised in the following way: - The subject field was classified into sub-fields by Management function. - Each of these sub-fields was analysed to discover the main concepts with which it is concerned. - Terms were selected for each concept, using as far as possible terms which are already in common use. - Definitions were selected or written for each term.This approach of starting with subject classification is believed to be new in the field of production.Care has been taken to check the Glossary with the APICS dictionary (USA), and with British standards. Notes are included in Part 2 to explain the reasons for selecting a particular meaning for a term, in those cases where there are wide differences in the meanings chosen by different sources.Some consensus about the meaning of words is essential for communication. On the other hand, there is a danger that if the accepted framework of meanings is too rigid, if may hinder the future development of the discipline. It is hoped that a reasonable balance has been found between these conflicting influences.
