Hardware description languages (HDLs) have established themselves as one of the principal means of designing electronic systems. The interest in and usage of HDLs continues to spread rapidly, driven by the increasing complexity of systems, the growth of HDL-driven synthesis, the research on formal design methods and many other related advances. This research-oriented publication aims to make a strong contribution to further developments in the field. The following topics are explored in depth: BDD-based system design and analysis; system level formal verification; formal reasoning on hardware; languages for protocol specification; VHDL; HDL-based design methods; high level synthesis; and text/graphical HDLs. There are short papers covering advanced design capture and recent work in high level synthesis and formal verification. In addition, several invited presentations on key issues discuss and summarize recent advances in real time system design, automatic verification of sequential circuits and languages for protocol specification.

Developments in Cell Biology, Volume 1: Development and Differentiation in the Cellular Slime Moulds is a collection of papers from the proceedings of the International Workshop held at Porto Conte, Sardinia on April 12-16, 1977. This collection of papers deals with a single group of organisms, the cellular slime molds, particularly with Dictyostelium discoideum. Dictyostelium is dealt, firstly, according to cell differentiation and pattern formation common in this type of organism. These examples are further explored in the Dictyostelium discoideum slug, through the control of morphogenesis. Further research shows that two compounds, 3'5' cyclic AMP and NH3, can affect the course of morphogenesis in D. discoideum. Techniques for cell fusion and mutation induction in D. discoideum, especially as a result of DNA damage following radiation and chemicals, are analyzed. Other studies show that formation and maintenance of stable contacts between cells appear to be necessary for the normal cell cycle involved in the growth of D. discoideum. The changes in plasma membrane protein analyzed using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis are examined. Results show that detection and quantitation of tubulin in Dictyostelium discoideum is important when studying the differentiation processes of a wide range of cellular activities. Because many D. discoideum mutants fail to reach proper development, the method for selecting the aggregation of defective mutants of D. discoideum is emphasized. This book is of interest to those whose work involves these organisms and to researchers, professors, and students whose disciplines are in Developmental Biology or Mycology.

Radicals arose originally from structural investigations in rings, but later on they infiltrated into various branches of algebra, as well as into topology and relational structures. This volume is the result of a conference attended by mathematicians from all five continents and thus represents the current state of research in the area.

The institute of annual Tinbergen Lectures was established by the Royal Netherlands Economic Association in honour of one of its greatest members, Jan Tinbergen. Collected in this volume are the six Tinbergen lectures which have been delivered from 1987 onwards by distinguished economists of international standing. The lectures are preceded by a brief outline of their content, and a chapter dealing with Tinbergen's membership of the Royal Netherlands Economic Association. In addition chapter 3 contains a survey of the change and continuity in Tinbergen's work.

Since the first INTERACT Conference in September 1984, the field of Human-Computer Interaction has received increasing attention from researchers and industrial practitioners, the importance of the topic now being widely recognized. Technological developments have made it possible to seek new solutions to the problem of supporting work processes by information technology and for designing the interface between user and the machine. Computers have become an everyday and common tool in the work of many people. This has motivated the development of an interdisciplinary field of research, which now appears much more established than it was a few years ago.The INTERACT forums provide the opportunity for regular presentation and discussion of new results from research and application by bringing together the various disciplines and research approaches on a worldwide basis.

Colloquia Mathematica Societatis Jânos Bolyai, 37: Finite and Infinite Sets, Vol. I focuses on the principles, operations, and approaches involved in finite and infinite sets. The selection first elaborates on essential chains and squares, cellular automata in trees, almost disjoint families of countable sets, and application of Lovasz local lemma. Discussions focus on deleting operations, number of all and self-dual E-chains, transversality of E-chains and E-squares, and binary E-chains and E-squares. The text then elaborates on induced subgraphs, inverse extremal digraph problems, two Sperner-type conditions, and minimal decomposition of all graphs with equinumerous vertices and edges into mutually isomorphic subgraphs. Topics include general digraph extremal problem, matrix graphs and quadratic forms, augmentation of matrices, set of attained densities, proof of the continuity theorem, and inverse extremal multigraph problems. The text examines circular flows in graphs, two-colorings of simple arrangements, monochromatic paths in infinite colored graphs, and graphs associated with an integral domain and their applications. The selection is a dependable reference for researchers interested in finite and infinite sets.
