A Survey of Combinatorial Theory covers the papers presented at the International Symposium on Combinatorial Mathematics and its Applications, held at Colorado State University (CSU), Fort Collins, Colorado on September 9-11, 1971. The book focuses on the principles, operations, and approaches involved in combinatorial theory, including the Bose-Nelson sorting problem, Golay code, and Galois geometries. The selection first ponders on classical and modern topics in finite geometrical structures; balanced hypergraphs and applications to graph theory; and strongly regular graph derived from the perfect ternary Golay code. Discussions focus on perfect ternary Golay code, finite projective and affine planes, Galois geometries, and other geometric structures. The book then examines the characterization problems of combinatorial graph theory, line-minimal graphs with cyclic group, circle geometry in higher dimensions, and Cayley diagrams and regular complex polygons. The text discusses combinatorial problems in finite Abelian groups, dissection graphs of planar point sets, combinatorial problems and results in fractional replication, Bose-Nelson sorting problem, and some combinatorial aspects of coding theory. The text also reviews the enumerative theory of planar maps, balanced arrays and orthogonal arrays, existence of resolvable block designs, and combinatorial problems in communication networks. The selection is a valuable source of information for mathematicians and researchers interested in the combinatorial theory.

These lectures review the research and experience on the subject of health care economy. The author also sets down a moderately rigorous statement of the economic concepts underlying the kind of competition that he regards as the most promising way to achieve a reasonable degree of equity and efficiency in health care. The first lecture is on the public policy goals of health care financing and delivery and discusses efficiency in health care. The second presents an economic analysis of the systems for organizing and financing medical care systems in the United States. The third lecture is about ``managed competition'', and the fourth reviews American experience with efforts to convert from the traditional system to a competitive system. The book is addressed primarily to economists, health policy makers and health services researchers. It explains how market forces may be managed in pursuit of equity and efficiency in health care. It addresses systematically many of the causes of market failure and proposes a strategy (``managed competition'') for overcoming them. It should be of interest to policy makers in any country interested in incentives for more efficient health care delivery. It should also be very useful supplemental reading for courses in health care economics.

Impact Wear of Materials is entirely devoted to quantitative treatment of various forms of wear occurring in impact-loaded mechanical components. Impact wear is classified under two headings, namely `erosive' and `percussive' wear. In erosive wear, particle streams and liquid jets are discussed. The subject is developed with emphasis on material relations, stress analysis and the historical progress of research. In percussive wear, a wide variety of wear mechanisms is described. The author's experimental/analyti... work created the groundwork for a general procedure of impact wear-law formulation, combining impact analysis with the physical wear mechanism. Ballistic impact and pivotal hammering, compound impact, the optimal wearpath, lubrication, plasticity, and flexible media are some of the topics considered. The book develops a new conceptual approach to impact, impact-originated wear and wear in general. It describes and utilizes the modern tools of observation in wear science. In mechanical analysis it emphasizes quantitative treatment, using such tools as finite element stress analysis, APL programming language etc., each applied with classic simplicity. Numerous photographs, tables, figures and examples are used throughout the text and the mathematical treatment strives for simplicity and conceptual clarity. The book is of value to mechanical component designers, analysts and researchers. It is also useful in science and engineering curricula at senior and graduate level and, although its appeal is primarily in tribology, machine design and materials science, its interdisciplinary language makes it accessible to any branch of the physical sciences and engineering.

These papers provide an interesting collection of contributions on fundamental magnetic behaviour, microstructural studies, processing methods and applications of rare earth, iron-rich, high performance permanent magnets. The remarkably versatile nature of the Nd-Fe-B-type alloys with respect to magnet processing is very evident in these proceedings. Thus there are papers which describe the production of magnets by the die-upset-forging of melt-spun ribbon, by cold-compaction of melt-spun-ribbon with soft metals, by mechanical alloying and by hot working of cast material. Work is also reported on the production of new permanent magnets from melt-spun material based on the alloys Nd4Fe78B18 and SmFe11.5Ti1.04. Both these alloys look promising and the former appears to be close to commercial exploitation.
