Before 1989, the core of comparative economics was the comparison of economic systems with in particular the economic analysis of socialism in its different forms. In the last fifteen years, the main focus of interest of comparative economists has been the transition from socialism to capitalism. In recent years, mostly as a result of the transition experience, a new orientation of comparative economics has emerged that focuses on the comparison of the economic effects of the various institutions of capitalism, be it in the legal sphere (common law versus civil law), in the political sphere (different types of democracies and electoral regimes) or in the sphere of culture, social norms, etc. This new orientation is a natural development following the very diverse experience of transitions from socialism to capitalism. The transition experience has indeed shown with a vengeance the importance of institutions in the process of economic development.Question... raised along these new orientations include: what institutions are critical (courts, credit markets, good regulations, etc) for successful growth?; how should institutions be measured (subjective surveys, particular laws on the books, etc); why are certain institutions, such as courts and regulatory culture, slow-moving while others, such as constitutions and electoral procedures, relatively fast-moving; why is there so much cross-sectional variance in the quality of institutions, and what kinds of initial conditions or historic natural experiments can be employed to estimate the causal impact of institutions on economic performance? Introduction: To tackle complex real world problems, scientists have been looking into natural processes and creatures - both as model and metaphor - for years. Manuscripts focused on understanding how governance of emerging technologies can foster sociotechnical progress while protecting public interests should be submitted to the Technology Governance and Public Policy bureau of TFSC.During the submission process, authors are responsible for carefully selecting the bureau in which their study should be assessed for potential publication in TFSC. We also encourage submissions taking a more holistic approach to the study of technology and its impact on society, by covering thematic areas that are relevant for more than one bureau. It is also important to highlight that manuscripts looking into individual, organizational, or societal factors that impact technological development are out of scope. Moreover, TFSC does not publish research that focuses on social change only, unless authors examine this change through the lens of specific technological developments. All manuscripts published in TFSC are expected to make substantial theoretical and practical contributions. Practical contributions can be translated into recommendations for management practice but also as policy implications. These contributions need to be explicitly spelled out and well-rooted in the findings of your study. To substantially advance our understanding of technology and its impact on society, submissions have to be rooted inan effective, consistent, and current theoretical basis. An effective theoretical underpinning enables researchers to frame the subject matter under investigation. For a theory base to be consistent, all ideas developed in the manuscript need to build on a theoretical framework with matching ontological and epistemological basic assumptions. The theoretical underpinning is current if authors effectively leverage state-of-the-art knowledge provided in scientific publications. TFSC will not publish manuscripts that lack a strong theoretical contribution, methodological development, and practical implications. Behavioural Processes is dedicated to the publication of high-quality original research on animal behaviour from any theoretical perspective. It welcomes contributions that consider animal behaviour from behavioural analytic, cognitive, ethological, ecological and evolutionary points of view. This list is not intended to be exhaustive, and papers that integrate theory and methodology across disciplines are particularly welcome.The quality of research and focus on behavioural processes are the sole criteria for acceptance. Behavioural Processes considers both papers investigating basic behavioural phenomena and behavioural studies of more applied significance. B&C publishes peer-reviewed research articles, theoretical papers, case histories that address important theoretical issues, and historical articles into the interaction between cognitive function and brain processes. The focus is on rigorous studies of an empirical or theoretical nature and which make an original contribution to our knowledge about the involvement of the nervous system in cognition. Coverage includes, but is not limited to memory, learning, decision making, emotion, perception, movement, music or praxis in relationship to brain structure, function or development. Scholarly articles on environmental influences—social, physical, catastrophic—on aspects of brain and cognition are also welcome.Published articles will typically address issues relating some aspect of cognitive function to its neurological substrates with clear theoretical import, formulating new hypotheses or refuting previously established ones. Clinical papers are welcome if they raise issues of theoretical importance or concern and shed light on the interaction between brain function and cognitive function. We welcome review articles that clearly contribute a new perspective or integration, beyond summarizing the literature in the field; authors of review articles should make explicit where the contribution lies. Corpus linguistics (CL) is a rapidly growing area of research worldwide, and CL techniques and approaches to large scale textual data analysis are being adopted and extended in a wide range of contexts. Corpus research is no longer confined primarily to the study of linguistics and to generalised language description but is now applied in diverse fields, such as forensic linguistics, social policy studies, food studies, anthropology, writing development studies, translation and interpreting, and the analysis of corporate and government communications.With this broadening of the range of applications of corpus methods and frameworks has come a need for a journal in which studies and reports can be brought together for an audience of researchers and practitioners that are interested in the range of applications of corpus linguistics. The role of Applied Corpus Linguistics is to provide a forum for further theorisation of corpus data analysis techniques, for the sharing of case studies and of new methods, and to advance the development and consolidation of applied corpus linguistics as a major force in social research.The journal welcomes contributions in the form of full length research articles, discussion papers, short technical papers and book reviews. While the emphasis is on applications rather than on theorisations, it is expected that all studies will be adequately theorised. As the intended readership extends beyond corpus linguistics, however, the focus must be on application and on communication of content to a non-specialist reader. Papers reporting technical innovations and novel data visualisation methods (for demonstrably effective communication) are encouraged.It is recognised that 'applied' is a term that defies easy definition.
