Stable isotope techniques offer advantages in safety, sensitivity, specificity, and economy for many types of pharmaceutical investigations when compared to conventional techniques. Nevertheless, pharmaceutical researchers are slow to embrace stable isotope techniques. This book assembles in one place comprehensive reviews of the many applications of stable isotopes and the background material necessary to understand the application. This approach is a deliberate attempt to encourage the usage of stable isotopes in pharmaceutical research. A bonus to the reader is the high standard of contributions from a very talented and diverse group of investigators.

The symposium "UV, Blue and Green Light Emission fromSemiconductor Materials" was part of the European MaterialsResearch Society (E-MRS) Spring Meeting in Strasbourg, 4-7 June,1996 and it was arranged to bring together specialists in growth,characterizat... and device fabrication of materials suitable forvisible and UV optoelectronic applications. Although the mainemphasis was on the development of semiconductor diode lasers, work was also presented on the progress of frequently doublingtechniques which have an immediate application in commercialsystems. The proceedings are divided into Part I and Part IIreflecting the two streams of research based on II-VIsemiconductors on the one hand and III-V GaN based semiconductorson the other hand. Although these two areas are competingvigorously for the realization of practical blue laser diodes, there are many common problems, particularly with doping and also the need for suitable substrates for the growth of latticematched structures. The invited talks were presented byspeakers from Japan, the USA and Europe with representation fromboth University and Industrial research groups. In particular, leaders in the development of blue lasers SONY (II-VI devices)and Nichia (GaN devices) provided important device papersalongside the excellent contributions on a wide range of topicscovering epitaxial growth, optical structural and electricalmeasuremen... as well as problems of compensation of dopants andlaser lifetimes. The symposium "Nonlinear Optical andOptoelectronics Organic Materials" dealt with the development oforganic molecules and polymers as potential replacements forexisting materials in electronic, optoelectronics and nonlinearoptical devices.

The Symposium on Magnetic Ultrathin Films, Multilayers andSurfaces, hosted by the European Materials Research Society, washeld at the Palais de la Musique et des Congré inStrasbourg, France on June 4-7, 1996. Its central theme was therelationship of magnetic properties and device performance tostructure at the nano and micrometer length scale. Research onthe magnetism of surfaces, ultrathin films and multilayers hasincreased dramatically during recent years. This development wastriggered by the discovery of coupling between ferromagneticlayers across nonmagnetic spacer layers and of the giantmagnetoresistan... effect in systems of reduced dimension usingvarious micro and nanofabrication techniques has become a subjectof special interest. It is certainly the promising applicationpotential of these effects in new magnetic recording devicegeometries which causes this intensive research, which is doneboth by companies and at universities and researchinstitutes.A selection of invited and contributed paperspresented at the Symposium and accepted for publication iscontained in this volume. The contents of these proceedings areorganized into seven sections.A. Nanowires, Nanoparticles,Nanost... Ultrathin Films and Surfaces,Characteriz... Giant MagnetoresistanceD. Coupling,TunnelingE. Growth, Structure, MagnetismF. Growth,Structure, MagnetoresistanceG. Coupling, Magnetic processes,Magneto-op... first four sections contain invited andoral contributed papers in the listed research domains, while thelast three sections contain the contributions presented duringthree large poster sessions.

  • Side Effects of Drugs Annual

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 20
    • English
The Side Effects of Drugs Annual has been published each year since 1977. It is designed to provide a critical and up-to-date account of new information related to adverse drug reactions and interactions from the clinician's point of view.Under the supervision of the series editors, an international team of expert authors have gathered together the latest information on adverse drug effects from the international literature. In addition to describing new reports of adverse drug effects, the authors have subjected those reports to critical analysis, setting them into context in terms of clinical relevance and importance, and cross-referring to previous reports where necessary. New adverse effects are reported and evaluated and previously reported adverse effects are re-evaluated in the light of the most recent information. A special feature is the reviews, in which selected adverse effects are discussed in depth. The use of the book is enhanced by two separate indexes, allowing the reader to enter the text by drug name, adverse effect name, or drug interaction. The Annual can be used independently or as a supplement to the standard encyclopaedic work in this field, Meyler's Side Effects of Drugs, of which, the http://www.elsevier.... Edition was published in December 2000.

Trace Determination of Pesticides and their Degradation Products in Water is a critical compilation of analytical methods for the monitoring of pesticides and their degradation products in water. It contains up-to-date material and is the result of the authors' experience in the pesticide analysis field. The book is structured in six chapters, starting from general aspects of pesticides like usage, physicochemical parameters and occurrence in the environment. A second chapter is devoted to sampling from water matrices, stability methods of pesticides in water and quality assurance issues. The general chromatographic methods for pesticides are reported, including the newly developed electrophoresis methods and GC-MS and LC-MS confirmatory analytical methods. Sample preparation methodologies, including off-line and on-line techniques are described in the next two chapters, with a comprehensive list of examples of pesticides and many metabolites, including the use of different GC-methods and LC-methods. The final chapter is devoted to the development of biological techniques, immunoassays and biosensors, for the trace determination of pesticides in water samples.

GOOS is an international programme for a permanent global framework of observations, modelling and analysis of ocean variables which are needed to support operational services around the world. The EuroGOOS strategy has two streams: the first is to improve the quality of marine information in European home waters, and the second is to collaborate with similar organisations in other continents to create a new global ocean observing and modelling system that will provide the open ocean forecasts needed to achieve the best possible performance by local marine information services everywhere. The EuroGOOS strategy envisages our national agencies making a major contribution to that challenging task of globalizing ocean forecasting. The conference also provided an opportunity to take stock of the state of marine science and technology in Europe relevant to the EuroGOOS strategy, and the state of information services and customer needs.

Modern scientific and technological fields are frequently of an interdisciplinary nature, and the field of fibrous composites is no exception. Unlike fibre-reinforced plastics, the family of metal- and ceramic-based composites is still quite a new group of materials with a large variety of mechanical and physical properties. Up until now it has been difficult to produce these materials as the necessary technical information has not been well documented. The main purpose of this book is to link together fabrication, structure and properties chains, so as to clarify which structure provides the necessary properties, and how one can attain the correct composite structure. To this end, the book not only contains topics of a purely technical nature, but also a description of the failure mechanics of metal- and ceramic-matrix composites, as this is the key to understanding the structure-properties segment of the chain mentioned. The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a general view of composites with the accent on metal- and ceramic-matrix composites. It also contains a brief description of modern fibres and composites and can be considered, at least for beginners, as a starting point for further study. Part II looks at the composite microstructures considered to be either optimal or reasonable in resisting a particular loading. Finally Part II describes a variety of mechanical, physical, and chemical potential for organizing these microstructures. Experimental data on technologies, material structures, and material properties are used throughout the book to support theoretical conclusions or to obtain important physical parameters.
