Organic Chemistry Concepts: An EFL Approach provides an introductory overview of the subject, to enable the reader to understand many critical, experimental facts. Designed to cover a single-semester course or a needed review on the principles of Organic Chemistry, the book is written and organized for readers whose first language is not English. Approximately 80% of the words used are drawn from the list of the 2,000 most common English words; the remaining 20% includes necessary technical words, common chemistry terms, and well-known academic words (per the Academic Word List). The book has been class-tested internationally as well as with native English speakers, and differs from other introductory textbooks in the subject both in its coverage and organization, with a particular focus on common problem areas.Focused on a limited number of functional classes, Organic Chemistry Concepts: An EFL Approach introduces those organic compounds early in the book. Once readers have a foundation of the concepts and language of organic chemistry, they can build from that knowledge and work with relatively complex molecules, such as some natural product types covered in a later chapter. The book describes basic level reaction mechanisms when instructive, and illustrations throughout to emphasize the 3D nature of organic chemistry. The book includes multiple pedagogical features, such as chapter questions and useful appendices, to support reader comprehension.

Decision Information is a collection of manuscripts presented at the 1976 Workshop on Decision Information for Tactical Command and Control, held at the Airlie House in Airlie, Virginia. This workshop provides the scientific managers of the Service Office of Research with the knowledge allowing them to formulate research programs relevant to military problems in decision information. This book is organized into three parts encompassing 28 chapters. The first part consists of presentations in systems approach to large-scale human and man-machine systems, benefit-cost models for decision makers, team decision models, and cubic interpolation processes. The contributors highlight the various theoretical aspects of the models and illustrate their scientific usefulness to many problems in the society. The second part explores the statistical models in the areas of scheduling systems, combat models, logistic structures, inventory systems, Bayesian and empirical Bayesian reliability models, parameter estimation schemes, and memory models. This part also presents a broad spectrum of mathematical sciences that illustrate the two main facts that make most problems, namely, the number of variates in the model and the degree of uncertainty. The third part is devoted to military presentations, emphasizing the problem in command, control, and communication. This part also considers the implementation of fuzzy sets in military command analysis, decision support in a conflict environment, and data-poor modeling.

Advances in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research have been challenging and without major breakthroughs in understanding its pathological basis. The reigning hypothesis suggests AD is the result of extracellular amyloid deposition that seed to form amyloid plaques, which then grow and kill neighboring neurons. However, there are several inconsistencies with this hypothesis, not to mention the inability to show clinical benefit in several failed clinical trials by pharmaceuticals (i.e., from Pfizer, Eli Lilly, etc.), and it is in the field’s best interest to explore and test multiple hypotheses for pathology rather than drive the majority of research on this single amyloid theory. Reviewing many scientifically peer-reviewed publications, this book describes the "Inside-Out" hypothesis on how amyloid escapes the circulatory system through a dysfunctional blood-brain barrier to bind to the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor on pyramidal neurons. Over time, excessive amounts of amyloid appear to be internalized, resulting in neuron death and lysis. This simple mechanism readily explains plaque composition, size, shape, and location. Based on the current direction of research in the field, this hypothesis appears years from any research and development.
