  • Dictionary of Water and Waste Management

    • 1st Edition
    • Paul G Smith
    • English
The first edition of the Dictionary of Waste and Water Treatment was published in 1981 and was aimed at treatment and treatment design. Over the last 20 years, areas such as air pollution control, solid waste management, hazardous waste management, pipeline management (leakage control, pipeline and sewer renewal) and environmental management systems have all become increasingly important. To reflect this shift, this completely revised and updated edition now covers water and waste management as well as treatment. The dictionary contains definitions of around 7000 terms used in:Water resources and hydrologyDrinking water qualityWaterborne diseasesPublic HealthWater treatmentWastewater treatmentSludge treatmentAir pollution & air pollution controlSolid Waste ManagementHazardous Waste ManagementPipeline Management (leakage control, pipeline & sewer renewal)Environmenta... Management systems (ISO 14000, EMAS)The dictionary has been completely revised and updated to encompass all the changes of the last 20 years to become the most comprehensive dictionary of water and waste management available.

  • Hazardous Chemicals Handbook

    • 2nd Edition
    • P A CARSON
    • English
The authors' aim with this handbook, is to provide a rapid ready-reference to help in the often complex task of handling, using and disposing of chemicals safely and with minimum risk to people's health or damage to facilities or to the environment. The book provides look-up data, and concise, clear explanations of general chemical principles, physiochemical and reactive properties, toxicities and exposure limits, flammability characteristics, monitoring techniques, personal protection and other parameters and requirements relating to compliance with designated safe practice, control of risks to people's health and limitation of environmental impact.
  • Temperature-Fatigue Interaction

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 29
    • L. Remy + 1 more
    • English
This volume contains a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the International Conference on Temperature-Fatigue Interaction, held in Paris, May 29-31, 2001, organised by the Fatigue Committee of the Societé Française de Métallurgie et de Matériaux (SF2M), under the auspices of the European Structural Integrity Society. The conference disseminated recent research results and promoting the interaction and collaboration amongst materials scientists, mechanical engineers and design engineers. Many engineering components and structures used in the automotive, aerospace, power generation and many other industries experience cyclic mechanical loads at high temperature or temperature transients causing thermally induced stresses. The increase of operating temperature and thermal mechanical loading trigger the interaction with time-dependent phenomena such as creep and environmental effects (oxidation, corrosion). A large number of metallic materials were investigated including aluminium alloys for the automotive industry, steels and cast iron for the automotive industry and materials forming, stainless steels for power plants, titanium, composites, intermetallic alloys and nickel base superalloys for aircraft industry, polymers. Important progress was observed in testing practice for high temperature behaviour, including environment and thermo-mechanical loading as well as in observation techniques. A large problem which was emphasized is to know precisely service loading cycles under non-isothermal conditions. This was considered critical for numerous thermal fatigue problems discussed in this conference.
  • Fiber Optic Data Communication

    Technology Advances and Futures
    • 1st Edition
    • Casimer DeCusatis
    • English
This book is an authoritative review of current and future trends in the field of telecommunications. Written by industry experts who are developing leading-edge data communication networks, Fiber Optic Data Communication provides professionals and students alike with a look at emerging technologies and their applications. Four of the chapters have been revised from DeCusatis's best-selling book, Handbook of Fiber Optic Data Communications; the remaining eight chapters are all new. Seven helpful appendices, a glossary, and a list of technical acronyms are included. This book can stand alone or as a companion volume to DeCusatis: Handbook of Fiber Optic Data Communication, Second Edition (February 2002, ISBN: 0-12-207891-8).

  • Developing an Effective Safety Culture

    A Leadership Approach
    • 1st Edition
    • James Roughton + 1 more
    • English
Developing an Effective Safety Culture implements a simple philosophy, namely that working safely is a cultural issue. An effective safety culture will eventually lead to the desired goal of zero incidents in the work place, and this book will provide an understanding of what is needed to reach this goal. The authors present reference material for all phases of building a safety management system and ultimately developing a safety program that fits the culture. This volume offers the most comprehensive approach to developing an effective safety culture. Information is easily accessible as the authors move first through, understanding the cost of incidents, then to perspectives and descriptions of management systems, principal management leadership traits, establishing and evaluating goals and objectives, providing visible leadership, and assigning required responsibilities. In addition, you are given the means to systematically identifying hazards and develop your own hazard inventory and control system. Further information on OSHA requirements for training, behavior-based safety processes, and the development of a job hazard analysis for each task is available as well. Valuable case studies, from the authors' own experience in the industry, are used throughout to demonstrate the concepts presented.
  • Elastic Beams and Frames

    • 2nd Edition
    • J D Renton
    • English
The book approaches the basic theory of structures from a different perspective from standard pedagogy. There is consideration of work and energy concepts as fundamental and the equations of statics derived from them. Likewise, these concepts, together with that of the characteristic response, are used in the derivation of beam theory. Plane sections remaining plane is then seen as a particular result for isotropic, homogeneous, prismatic beams. The general theory may still be used where none of these conditions holds, and can even be applied to trusses. It also corrects errors in the theory of beam shear. Special topics discussed include non-uniform torsion, the exact analysis of shear, anisotropy, advanced energy methods, optimum structures, and regular frames. Software provided in the book includes seven general purpose programs for analysis of plane, space frames with rigid or pinned joints, and uses the augmented Gaussian elimination process and dynamic storage techniques.
