This unique book, the first published on the subject, provides an introduction to the theory of macrotransport processes, a comprehensive effective-medium theory of transport phenomena in heterogeneous systems. The text begins with a relatively simple approach to the basic theory before turning to a more formal theoretical treatment which is extended in scope in each successive chapter. Many detailed examples, as well as questions appearing at the end of each chapter, are included to demonstrate the practical implementation of the theory.Macrotranspor... Processes is aimed at an audience already familiar with conventional theories of transport phenomena. This audience especially includes graduate students in chemical, mechanical, and civil engineering departments, as well as applied mathematicians, biomechanicists, and soil physics, particularly those with interests in problems of flow and dispersion in porous media.

The interdisciplinary nature of tribology encompasses knowledge drawn from disciplines such as mechanical engineering, materials science, chemistry and physics. The interaction between these different fields of knowledge to achieve the final result, the control of friction and wear, is reviewed in this volume. This interdisciplinary approach has proven to be a very successful way of analysing friction and wear problems. In many cases tribology is viewed as an inaccessible subject which does not produce useful answers. In this volume the authors redress this problem by providing a comprehensive treatment of the subject. A basic feature of the book is the emphasis on describing various concepts in an accessible manner for the benefit of non-specialists. This principle is applied from the beginning of the book, where the reader is introduced to the fundamental concept of tribology. This concept is then often used to show how the various topics in tribology are interrelated to form one coherent subject. A direct graphical illustration of the mechanisms controlling tribological phenomena is presented. Carefully prepared diagrams allow rapid appreciation of the basic ideas and facts in tribology. The numerical analysis of hydrodynamic lubrication is supported by a number of computer programs which are included in the book. The control of wear is given extensive treatment with a thorough discussion of lubricant additives, solid lubricants and surface coatings. The effectiveness of coatings in suppressing specific forms of wear is analyzed together with the methods of coatings deposition. The book contains 474 figures and 44 tables. More than 1000 references are provided to give the reader access to more specialized information if required. The volume is intended to provide graduates in engineering or materials science with an understanding of the fundamental concepts of friction, wear and lubrication.

Private Security Law: Case Studies is uniquely designed for the special needs of private security practitioners, students, and instructors. Part One of the book encompasses negligence, intentional torts, agency contracts, alarms, and damages. Part Two covers authority of the private citizen, deprivation of rights, and entrapment. The factual cases presented in this book touch on the everyday duties of persons associated with the private security industry. Private Security Law: Case Studies provides a basic orientation to problems capable of inciting litigation. The information presented through case laws comes from cases chosen for their factual, realistic, and practical connection to the private security industry. This focused approach addresses specific problem areas of the industry and provides information necessary to a security manager to avert future loss.

Radar and ARPA Manual has been planned not only as a comprehensive practical reference for mariners on board ship and managers ashore, but also to provide all essential information for candidates following ENS, radar observer and professional certificate courses.Recent years have seen significant changes in the design of basic radar systems: ARPA features are now almost entirely integrated with the radar display. This new manual covers the complete radar/ARPA installation, bringing together a body of practical information on equipment and techniques which will both serve the observer using traditional systems and provide reliable guidance for the use of newer equipment. The recent changes in radar displays that are likely to be of greatest significance to the observer are the developments in signal processing and the advent of raster-scan displays; these receive exhaustive treatment. The effects of changes in shipboard operations, such as false echoes from containers, are also dealt with.Throughout the book the operational significance of the IMO Performance Standards is stressed, as is the role of radar and ARPA in navigation and collision avoidance.
