Autoimmunity and the Thyroid is a collection of papers presented at an International Satellite Meeting prior to the 7th International Congress of Endocrinology, held at the Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto Medical School on June 29 and 30, 1984. The book provides presentations of participants relating to selected aspects of immune regulation and its role in autoimmune thyroid diseases. Concepts on humoral and cell-mediated immunity mechanisms in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid disease are reviewed; important observations with promising clinical implications in terms of immunogenetics of Graves' and Hashimoto's diseases are presented; and selection of appropriate therapy for Graves' thyrotoxicosis, and the possibility of preventive immunosuppressive and ophthalmopathy therapy are discussed. Endocrinologists, physicians, pathologists, physiologists, and medical researchers will find the book interesting.

Lunar and Planetary Surface Conditions considers the inferential knowledge concerning the surfaces of the Moon and the planetary companions in the Solar System. The information presented in this four-chapter book is based on remote observations and measurements from the vantage point of Earth and on the results obtained from accelerated space program of the United States and U.S.S.R. Chapter 1 presents the prevalent hypotheses on the origin and age of the Solar System, followed by a brief description of the methods and feasibility of information acquisition concerning lunar and planetary data, either from fixed terrestrial observatories or from instrumented or manned space probes. Chapter 2 reviews all conditions pertaining to the surface aspects of the closest celestial neighbor, the Moon. Sections in this chapter deal sequentially with the atmosphere, temperature conditions, subsurface stratification, field intensities (gravitational, electric, and magnetic), and lastly with the biological conditions existing on the lunar surface. This chapter also provides information on the density of the lunar atmosphere under quiescent or high-flux transient conditions, on the topography of the lunar surface, and on the probable proportion of crater-covered areas in the highlands and on the Maria. Chapter 3 is a detailed treatment of the surface conditions on the terrestrial planets, comprising Mercury, Venus, and Mars, while Chapter 4 deals with similar information relating to the so-called Jovian planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) and Pluto. This book will prove useful to lunar and planetary mission planners, both those concerned with the purely scientific aspects of surfaces and immediate subsurfaces, and those involved in the development of roving exploration vehicles.

Batteries 2: Research and Development in Non-Mechanical Electrical Power Sources provides information pertinent to the selection and operation of power source. This book focuses on the progress and further development in battery design. Organized into 38 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the metallurgical properties of a positive grid alloy as well as the properties of dispersion-strengthe... lead. This text then explains the voltage maximum as being resistance polarization. Other chapters consider the standard heat of activation for the rate-determining step at the reversible potential and explain the difficulties of predicting the orbital performance of solar cells from terrestrial measurements. This book discusses as well the chemical changes occurring during the manufacture and life of lead–acid batteries. The final chapter deals with the mechanism of the processes that occur in fuel cells. This book is a valuable resource for chemical, electrical, telecommunications, electrochemical, and automotive engineers.

Physics of Nuclei and Particles, Volume II explores the prevalent descriptive methods used in nuclear and particle physics, with emphasis on the phenomenological and model-based aspects. The interactions of nuclear particles are discussed, along with nuclear forces and potentials and scattering and reaction models employed in nuclear physics. The nuclear structure and models of the nucleus are also considered. Comprised of four chapters, this volume begins with a review of the characteristics of nucleons and other particles that play a role in nuclear interaction processes in order to gain further insight into the underlying physical problems. Neutron physics, antinucleons, deuteron physics, and two-body nuclear forces are highlighted, together with three- and four- nucleon systems and heavy-ion physics. The next three chapters deal with nuclear forces and potentials, as deduced from nuclear dynamics (scattering and polarization); scattering and reaction models used in nuclear physics; and nuclear models such as the shell model, models of deformed nuclei, and many-body self-consistent models. The book concludes with an analysis of the Brueckner-Bethe-Gold... theory of nuclear matter. This book will be of interest to physicists.

Strongly Coupled Plasma Physics covers the proceedings of the 24th Yamada Conference on Strongly Coupled Plasma Physics, held from August 29 to September 2, 1989 at Hotel Mount Fuji near Lake Yamanaka on the outskirts of Tokyo. The book focuses on the reactions, technologies, interactions, and transformations of charged particles. The selection first offers information on phase transitions in dense astrophysical plasmas and plasma thermodynamics and the evolution of brown dwarfs and planets, as well as solidification of dense astrophysical plasmas, evolution of brown dwarfs, and structure of Jupiter. The text then examines the discovery of low mass objects in Taurus and topics in X-ray astronomy from observations with GINGA. The publication ponders on proton abundance in hot neutron star matter; thermonuclear reaction rates of dense carbon-oxygen mixtures in white dwarfs; and quantum simulation of superconductivity. The text also examines dynamic simulation of mixed quantum-classical systems and Monte-Carlo simulations for the surface properties of the strongly coupled one-component plasma. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in strongly coupled plasma physics.

Principles of Quantum Electrodynamics concentrates on one of the best understood parts of quantum field theory, quantum electrodynamics. It emphasizes the physical basis of the theory and avoids purely mathematical details. For this reason, the book should not be taken as a handbook of field theory, but rather as a compendium of the most characteristic and interesting results which have been obtained up to now. The book is organized into four parts. Part I develops the general mathematical framework, covering units and orders of magnitude, classical electrodynamics, and the general formalism of the quantum theory of fields. Part II deals with free fields. It examines some problems concerning the physical interpretation of the theory and asks whether the quantization procedure adopted actually introduces quantum characteristics and, if so, how these are expressed by the formalism. It also investigates the expectation values of more complicated expressions. Part III examines the effects of a mechanism which produces the particles under consideration; i.e., an external source of the fields. Part IV deals with quantum fields in interaction. The focus is on the case of a quantized electromagnetic field, the source of which is a quantized Dirac field.

The paper also highlights the industrial applications of ion-sensitive electrodes and considers the measurement systems for industrial use. The book also points to the application of ion-selective electrodes to dental health, mineralized tissue programs, and inwater analysis. The text then closes by focusing on electrode development, particularly on the research on electrodes. The book is recommended for readers who are interested in doing research on ion-selective electrodes, particularly on their compositions and possible applications.
