  • Classical Transport Theory

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 1
    • R. Balescu
    • English
Transport Processes in Plasmas, Vol. 1: Classical Transport Theory focuses on problems on the transport of matter, pressure and velocity gradients combined with external electric, magnetic fields, and momentum and energy in a plasma submitted to temperature. The publication first ponders on the motion of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field and microscopic description of a plasma. Discussions focus on Liouville equation for independent particles in stationary external fields, Landau kinetic equation, conservation properties of the collision term, motion of a charged particle in simple electromagnetic fields, drift approximation, and Hamiltonian mechanics. The text then examines the macroscopic description of a plasma and Hermitian moment representation. Topics include local plasma equilibrium state, classification of the moments, local distribution functions, macroscopic quantities of a plasma, equations of evolution of the macroscopic quantities, and entropy balance. The manuscript reviews magnetohydrodynamics... entropy and transport, and classical transport theory. Concerns include linear transport regime, classical transport coefficients, entropy and Hermitian moments, transport form of the entropy production, and resistive magnetohydrodynamics... The book is a valuable source of data for researchers interested in the classical transport theory.
  • Basic Properties of Semiconductors

    • 1st Edition
    • P.T. Landsberg
    • English
Since Volume 1 was published in 1982, the centres of interest in the basic physics of semiconductors have shifted. Volume 1 was called Band Theory and Transport Properties in the first edition, but the subject has broadened to such an extent that Basic Properties is now a more suitable title.Seven chapters have been rewritten by the original authors. However, twelve chapters are essentially new, with the bulk of this work being devoted to important current topics which give this volume an almost encyclopaedic form. The first three chapters discuss various aspects of modern band theory and the next two analyze impurities in semiconductors. Then follow chapters on semiconductor statistics and on surfaces, interfaces and band offsets as they occur in heterojunctions. Chapters 8 to 19 report on newer topics (though a survey of transport properties of carriers is also included). Among these are transport of hot electrons, and thermoelectric effects including here and elsewhere properties of low-dimensional and mesoscopic structures. The electron-hole liquid, the quantum Hall effect, localisation, ballistic transport, coherence in superlattices, current ideas on tunnelling and on quantum confinement and scattering processes are also covered.

Data Gathering, Analysis and Protection of Privacy through Randomized Response Techniques: Qualitative and Quantitative Human Traits tackles how to gather and analyze data relating to stigmatizing human traits. S.L. Warner invented RRT and published it in JASA, 1965. In the 50 years since, the subject has grown tremendously, with continued growth. This book comprehensively consolidates the literature to commemorate the inception of RR.
  • An Introduction to Fiber Optics System Design

    • 1st Edition
    • B.E. Briley
    • English
A thorough account on the basics of fiber optics system design is contained in this volume. Introducing the topics from the vantage point of the student and professional electrical engineer, the aim of the text is to teach rather than merely present facts. The overall view of the text is toward practical engineering considerations including costs, and a discussion of radiation effects is associated with each appropriate chapter. The volume begins with a history of optical communications, leading to the now widely practiced field of fiber optics. Comparisons are made to conventional media and techniques: wire-line, coaxial cable, and radio. The nature and properties of optical fiber are examined, including manufacturing techniques, and fiber types and capabilities. The theory of light guidance is introduced in steps, beginning with a slab waveguide. Solutions of Maxwell's equations are derived and explained in view of the peculiar nature of the medium. Electro-optic devices are examined, including launching and detecting devices. The properties and varieties of these devices are explored. In particular, light-emitting diodes, injection laser diodes, p-i-n diodes, and avalanche photo diodes are covered. The electronic circuits necessary to adequately serve the electro-optic devices are examined and contrasted with more conventional types.Modulation techniques appropriate to optical fiber transmission systems are enumerated and compared. Overall system considerations are addressed, and examples are given of various systems that have been deployed, or are planned for deployment. Expectations for future developments and trends in the field are enumerated, with indications of their significance. Topics such as ultra-low-loss fiber and coherent detections techniques are discussed.Appendices comprising an accounting of useful laboratory equipment, mathematical relations employed in the body of the text, and complete exercise solutions are included.
  • Productivity and U.S. Economic Growth

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 169
    • Dale Jorgenson + 2 more
    • English
Between 1948 and 1979, economic activity in the United States increased almost twice as much as over the entire preceding course of American history. The traditional explanation of this remarkable development emphasizes productivity growth. In the most sophisticated study to date of the factors currently affecting economic growth, the authors of this book show that capital formation is far more important, with the growth of labor resources and productivity a distant second. Their conclusions rest on a far more detailed empirical base than any ever assembled in studies of economic growth. For example, the authors distinguish among 81,600 types of labor input – broken down by age, sex, education, occupation, and industry of employment. Similarly, they disaggregate capital by industry, class of asset, and tax treatment. Their analysis of economic growth is from the ``bottom up'' rather than the ``top down'' approach used in earlier work. The new findings imply that efforts to revive U.S. economic growth must focus on increased supplies of capital and labor inputs. This is the key to more rapid growth and international competition. One of the most important features of the book is the way in which it successfully integrates the theory of producer behavior with the indexing and measurement of production growth. The authors present startling new findings showing that less than one-fourth of overall growth is attributable to advances in productivity.
  • The International Monetary System

    An Essay in Interpretation
    • 1st Edition
    • E. Hoffmeyer
    • English
This book interprets the historical evolution of how and why the international monetary system has been transformed. The strategies of the major decision-makers are defined and described, and an analysis made of how these strategies were adapted. The structure of the analysis differs from other such contributions, in that it does not concentrate on the way in which disturbances have developed, but rather on describing the pattern of reaction of policy makers to disturbances, and in particular on the political element in the decisions. This structure of analysis makes relevance criteria somewhat different from most academic literature on the international monetary system. A substantial amount of evidence is presented that has hitherto been largely neglected by experts; for example the sterling support schemes, the gold pool transactions, the use of the swap network, Schiller's preparation of the German block floating, the intervention pattern among key currencies, and the views arising from the minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee. In order to facilitate comparison with other presentations careful documentation is provided of the points made. Apart from the literature referred to in the Bibliography, all material used - comprising documents, memoranda, publications and communiqués - has been organized in a computer index containing about 500 entries. Background material covered by one or more of these entries is available to the interested reader.
  • The Agro-Technological System towards 2000

    A European Perspective
    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 174
    • G. Antonelli + 1 more
    • English
The research published here constitutes a profound reflection on what is taking place in the world of agriculture at the threshold of the year 2000. The book attempts to go beyond a narrow sectoral analysis of the primary sector. It sets out to focus instead on the dynamic and innovative aspects of the agrotechnological system constituted by the complex interdependence of the agro-production, agro-food, agro-industrial and agro-ecological subsystems. The authors, internationally renowned scholars and scientists, tackle the most pressing contemporary economics issues from both a theoretical and policy-making standpoint. Three different lines of research are pursued concerning, first, the evolution and trends of world and European agricultural production, second, agricultural surplus formation and productivity dynamics in the economies of industrialized countries, and, lastly, the destination of agricultural outputs and land allotment under the impact of agro-bio-technologie...
