  • Hazardous Metals in the Environment

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 12
    • M. Stoeppler
    • English
The execution of detailed studies on the fate and levels of hazardous elements in the environment, foodstuffs and in human beings has become a major task in environmental research and especially in analytical chemistry. This has led to a demand to develop new methodology and optimize that already in use. The book offers the reader a general introduction to the problem areas that are currently being tackled, followed by chapters on sampling and sample preservation, strategies and applications of the archiving of selected representative specimens for long-term storage in environmental specimen banks. This is supplemented by the example of wine as a preserved - frequently, already historical - specimen which clearly reflects technological changes over time. The following chapters review sample treatment, present an overview on the most frequently and successfully applied trace analytical methods for metals and metal compounds, and introduce the increasingly important methods for identifying and quantifying metal species in sediments and soils (speciation). The chapters in the second part of the book provide data on analytical methods for determining the levels of toxicologically, ecotoxicologically and ecologically important elements in environmental and biological materials, including information on the separation and quantification of chemical and organomatallic species. The elements treated are aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium and thallium. The final chapter treats quality assurance and the importance of the continuous use of appropriate reference materials to avoid erroneous results.
  • Fatigue of Metallic Materials

    • 2nd Edition
    • Volume 71
    • M. Klesnil + 1 more
    • English
This book reviews problems in the mechanical behaviour of cyclically loaded metallic materials, primarily with regard to the nature of the fatigue process. The first edition of the book appeared in 1980. The present second edition represents a revised form of the original book and also covers recent developments in the field. As the book focuses on physical-metallurgic... aspects, it occupies a unique and important position in the technical literature, which has so far been devoted mainly to engineering metal fatigue problems and their technical solution in specific practical cases. The book provides a compact review of current knowledge on physical metallurgical processes that accompany and affect the fatigue of metallic materials, and also presents the background for applying the new results to practical designing and to the selection of materials in engineering practice. The authors present an updated review of results from countries both in the east and the west and cover a relatively large field in a concise manner. The work will be of value to research workers and students following advanced and post-graduate courses in the fields of materials science and mechanical engineering.
  • Theory of Physical and Technical Measurement

    • 1st Edition
    • J. Piotrowski
    • English
A complete theory of measurement from the principles of establishing the reality images to measurement procedures is presented in this book. A precise mathematical model of errors is presented with the use of various applications to interpret measurement results. Axioms are formulated which provide a deduction theory of measurement. The variety of problems addressed by modern science results in a diversity of models of physical and metrological phenomena, and leads to the view that there is not now, and may never be, a uniform theory of measurement. There is a need, however, to establish a foundation common to all measurements and studies, and this is the author's main aim allied to attempts to create a universal theory of measurement. The purpose of measurement is discussed. Many practical examples illustrating the methodology of modelling, calibration and the analysis of the results of measurement are reviewed. The book is designed for physicists, analytical and physical chemists and engineers involved with the work of metrology. A knowledge of physics, probability and statistics and the principles of metrology is a prerequisite for understanding this work.
  • Reservoir Induced Earthquakes

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 64
    • H.K. Gupta
    • English
Since the publication of the first Dams and Earthquakes in 1976, the phenomenon of reservoir induced seismicity (RIS) is more widely understood. There are now over 70 known cases of reservoir-induced earthquakes. These damaging earthquakes have occurred in China, Kariba, Zambia, Greece, Kremasta, Koyna, India, California and elsewhere. The December 10, 1967 Koyna earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.3 claimed over 200 lives, injured 1500 and rendered thousands homeless. Because of the ever increasing demand for dam construction, for power generation, irrigation, and flood control, it is necessary to understand how, where and why induced earthquakes occur. Recent research has demonstrated that when suitable physical measurements of rock properties are made, a fairly accurate model of induced seismicity can be obtained. It appears possible to mitigate the hazard of RIS through manipulation of reservoir levels. The present volume is an updated and revised follow-up to the 1976 book. It presents an overview of the world-wide distribution of RIS, the salient aspects of RIS at specific reservior sites where earthquakes of M⟩5 have occurred and where new results on RIS are reported, and how they differ from the normal earthquake sequences. An examination of the non-occurrence of induced earthquakes in the vicinity of the Himalyan reservoirs and other related topics such as: the size of the largest induced earthquake that could occur at a given reservoir site; prediction of induced earthquakes; and dam site investigations which should be completed during the planning and operation of the reservoirs are also included.
  • Progress in Medicinal Chemistry

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 29
    • English
The 29th volume of the series presents yet again, an exemplary survey of a wide range of current topics in medicinal chemistry and pharmacology. Eight expert reviews emphasize the relationships between chemical structure and pharmacological activity. These detailed discussions of some of the most exciting developments in the field today, will prove of great value to future research. The book begins with a study of anti-inflammatory activities of 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, followed by an overview of the antiarrhythmic therapeutic possibilities offered by Class III electrophysiological agents. Structures and activities of some opioid ligands are surveyed, and the investigation into pharmacologically active pyridazine derivatives is continued. Dopamine D2 receptor agonists offer exciting therapeutic potential, as do ondansetron and related 5-HT 3 antagonists. The herbal origin of many modern drugs is yet again reflected in a survey of the herb feverfew. The volume concludes, as it began, with enzyme inhibition - in this case concerning synthetic inhibitors of interstitial collagenases.
  • Thermal Properties and Temperature-Related Behavior of Rock/Fluid Systems

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 37
    • W.H. Somerton
    • English
This book brings together for the first time the results of research on the thermal properties and temperature-related behavior of rocks with their contained fluids, under subsurface environmental conditions. These data are of increasing importance with increased application of underground processes involving high temperature and, in some cases, low temperature environments. Some of the important processes are described in which thermal data are needed. Chapters deal with thermal properties of rocks, including heat capacities, thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities under conditions simulating subsurface environments. Discussion about the difficulty in measuring thermal properties of rock/fluid systems is included along with newly-developed models for predicting thermal properties from more-easily measured properties. The effects of thermal reactions in rocks, differential thermal expansion, and thermal alterations are discussed in separate chapters. The effects of temperature on rock properties, as distinct from the irreversible effects of heating, are reviewed. Lastly the book deals with wellbore applications of thermal and high-temperature behavior of rocks and methods of deducing thermal properties from geophysical logs run in boreholes. Appendices include thermal units conversion factors and thermal properties of some typical reservoir rocks and fluids.
