  • Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards

    • 4th Edition
    • L. Bretherick
    • English
Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards, Fourth Edition, has been prepared and revised to give access to a wide and up-to-date selection of documented information to research students, practicing chemists, safety officers, and others concerned with the safe handling and use of reactive chemicals. This will allow ready assessment of the likely potential for reaction hazards which may be associated with an existing or proposed chemical compound or reaction system. A secondary, longer-term purpose is to present the information in a way which will, as far as possible, bring out the causes of, and interrelationships between, apparently disconnected facts and incidents. This handbook includes all information which had become available to the author by April 1989 on the reactivity hazards of individual elements or compounds, either alone or in combination. It begins with an introductory chapter that provides an overview of the complex subject of reactive chemical hazards, drawing attention to the underlying principles and to some practical aspects of minimizing such hazards. This is followed by two sections: Section 1 provides detailed information on the hazardous properties of individual chemicals, either alone or in combination with other compounds; the entries in Section 2 are of two distinct types. The first type of entry gives general information on the hazardous behavior of some recognizably discrete classes or groups of the 4,600 or so individual compounds for which details are given in Section 1. The second type of entry concerns reactive hazard topics, techniques, or incidents which have a common theme or pattern of behavior involving compounds of several different groups, so that no common structural feature exists for the compounds involved.

Metal Cutting, Second Edition discusses the metallurgical aspects of metal cutting. The book is comprised of 10 chapters that deal with various concerns in the metal cutting process. Chapter 1 provides an introductory discourse about metal cutting, while Chapter 2 covers the metal cutting operations and terminology. Chapter 3 discusses the essential features of metal cutting, and Chapters 4 and 5 cover the forces and heat in metal cutting. The book also tackles the different materials used in cutting tools, such as steel, carbides, and ceramic. The machinability of the metal cutting process and coolants and lubricants are then explained. The text will be of great use to professionals involved in the metallurgical process of metal cutting.

Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition — 1986 focuses on developments in the compositions of animal feeds. The book first discusses studies on the fat content of human diet. The text also looks at future trends in the marketing of animal products with particular reference to fats. The book then discusses the manipulation of fat characteristics in animal products; antinutritional factors related with dietary fats and oils; and method of analysis of feedingstuffs for the identification of crude oils. The text highlights the implications for research and the feed compounder of oils and fats determination and the implications of biotechnology for animal nutrition. The book discusses the manipulation of milk yield with growth hormone (GH). Endogenous GH and lactation potential; mechanisms underlying the galactopoietic effects of bovine growth hormone (bGH); and galactopoietic action of exogenous bGH are discussed. The text also explains near infrared reflectance analysis of forages, residues in animal products, and nutrient modulation of the immune system. The book also highlights probiotics in pig diets and use of synthetic amino acids in poultry and pig diets. The book is a good source of information for readers wanting to study the compositions of animal feeds.

The Liver: Porta Malorum (The Gateway to Disease) presents the fundamental aspects and significance of liver as a detoxicating organ. This book explains the diversity of the signs produced by liver damage. Organized into 17 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the process of assimilation through the activities of the liver cells. This text then discusses the emptying mechanisms of the gall-bladder. Other chapters consider the various diseases, including jaundice, pancreatitis, Bright's disease, bronchial asthma, toxic goiter, hemorrhoids, spontaneous thrombosis in the rectal veins, and varicose veins of the leg. This book discusses as well the generally accepted theory concerning the etiology of appendicitis, with emphasis on bacterial inflammation. The final chapter deals with rectal varicose disorders. This book is a valuable resource for hepatologists, pathologists, morphologists, and physicians. Medical students and research workers interested in the fundamental aspects of the liver will also find this book extremely useful.
  • Perspectives in Basic and Applied Toxicology

    • 1st Edition
    • Bryan Ballantyne
    • English
Perspectives in Basic and Applied Toxicology features a collection of essays on various aspects of toxicology. It aims to relate fundamental knowledge of toxicology to its application in assessing relevance of that information to the causation of adverse health effects, predicting hazardous situations, defining protective and precautionary measures, and the recognition and management of intoxication in humans. Another objective of this volume is to encourage those with responsibility for the training of toxicologists to instill a greater concern about ethical and moral issues as fundamental to the practice of toxicology as a profession with wide-ranging social implications. This book is organized into 14 chapters. The coverage of these chapters include assessment of chemical hazards in the workplace, the relation between animal studies and epidemiology in the context of industrial toxicology, carcinogenicity testing in animals, and biochemical evaluation of neurotoxicity. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate toxicologists, pharmacologists, physicians, industrial hygienists, and other health professionals.
