  • Mechanical Design

    • 2nd Edition
    • P.R.N. Childs
    • English
This book introduces the subject of total design, and introduces the design and selection of various common mechanical engineering components and machine elements. These provide "building blocks", with which the engineer can practice his or her art.The approach adopted for defining design follows that developed by the SEED (Sharing Experience in Engineering Design) programme where design is viewed as "the total activity necessary to provide a product or process to meet a market need." Within this framework the book concentrates on developing detailed mechanical design skills in the areas of bearings, shafts, gears, seals, belt and chain drives, clutches and brakes, springs and fasteners. Where standard components are available from manufacturers, the steps necessary for their specification and selection are developed. The framework used within the text has been to provide descriptive and illustrative information to introduce principles and individual components and to expose the reader to the detailed methods and calculations necessary to specify and design or select a component. To provide the reader with sufficient information to develop the necessary skills to repeat calculations and selection processes, detailed examples and worked solutions are supplied throughout the text. This book is principally a Year/Level 1 and 2 undergraduate text. Pre-requisite skills include some year one undergraduate mathematics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer, principles of materials, statics and dynamics. However, as the subjects are introduced in a descriptive and illustrative format and as full worked solutions are provided, it is possible for readers without this formal level of education to benefit from this book. The text is specifically aimed at automotive and mechanical engineering degree programmes and would be of value for modules in design, mechanical engineering design, design and manufacture, design studies, automotive power-train and transmission and tribology, as well as modules and project work incorporating a design element requiring knowledge about any of the content described. The aims and objectives described are achieved by a short introductory chapters on total design, mechanical engineering and machine elements followed by ten chapters on machine elements covering: bearings, shafts, gears, seals, chain and belt drives, clutches and brakes, springs, fasteners and miscellaneous mechanisms. Chapters 14 and 15 introduce casings and enclosures and sensors and actuators, key features of most forms of mechanical technology. The subject of tolerancing from a component to a process level is introduced in Chapter 16. The last chapter serves to present an integrated design using the detailed design aspects covered within the book. The design methods where appropriate are developed to national and international standards (e.g. ANSI, ASME, AGMA, BSI, DIN, ISO).The first edition of this text introduced a variety of machine elements as building blocks with which design of mechanical devices can be undertaken. The approach adopted of introducing and explaining the aspects of technology by means of text, photographs, diagrams and step-by-step procedures has been maintained. A number of important machine elements have been included in the new edition, fasteners, springs, sensors and actuators. They are included here. Chapters on total design, the scope of mechanical engineering and machine elements have been completely revised and updated. New chapters are included on casings and enclosures and miscellaneous mechanisms and the final chapter has been rewritten to provide an integrated approach. Multiple worked examples and completed solutions are included.
  • Random Vibrations

Analysis of Structural and Mechanical Systems
    • 1st Edition
    • Loren D. Lutes + 1 more
    • English
The topic of Random Vibrations is the behavior of structural and mechanical systems when they are subjected to unpredictable, or random, vibrations. These vibrations may arise from natural phenomena such as earthquakes or wind, or from human-controlled causes such as the stresses placed on aircraft at takeoff and landing. Study and mastery of this topic enables engineers to design and maintain structures capable of withstanding random vibrations, thereby protecting human life.Random Vibrations will lead readers in a user-friendly fashion to a thorough understanding of vibrations of linear and nonlinear systems that undergo stochastic—random—ex...
  • Achieving Market Integration

Best Execution, Fragmentation and the Free Flow of Capital
    • 1st Edition
    • Scott McCleskey
    • English
Best execution, market integration, and other major financial market issues have traditionally been dealt with as separate matters requiring individual solutions. In Achieving Market Integration the author demonstrates the interrelated nature of these and other imperative problems, and sensibly reduces them to their common fundamental principles. Beginning with an in-depth examination of best execution in today's multiple-market environment, the book moves logically into an examination of market structure and the problems of achieving genuine integration. The book makes the case that order interaction is fundamental to addressing each of these issues, and develops a unified regulatory approach to achieve true market integration based on intermarket linkages and a cross-market best execution policy. This unique approach culminates in a coherent set of policy recommendations and an innovative framework for assessing the effectiveness of future policy proposals.
  • Introduction to Security

    • 7th Edition
    • Robert Fischer
    • English
Introduction to Security, Seventh Edition, presents the latest in security issues from security equipment and design theory to security management practice. This complete revision of the classic textbook has been reorganized to reflect the industry changes since the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks. It includes new coverage throughout of terrorism as it relates to cargo and travel security, potential areas of attack and target hardening techniques, and the use of current technologies to combat new threats. The book begins with a new chapter on the development of Homeland Security in the United States. Traditional physical and guard security is covered in addition to advances in the electronic and computer security areas, including biometric security, access control, CCTV surveillance advances, as well as the growing computer security issues of identity theft and computer fraud. The Seventh Edition provides the most comprehensive breakdown of security issues for the student while detailing the latest trends, legislation, and technology in the private and government sectors for real-world application in students' future careers. As the definitive resource for anyone entering or currently working in the security industry, this book will also benefit law enforcement personnel, security consultants, security managers, security guards and other security professionals, and individuals responsible for Homeland Security.

  • Lea's Chemistry of Cement and Concrete

    • 4th Edition
    • Peter Hewlett
    • English
Lea's Chemistry of Cement and Concrete deals with the chemical and physical properties of cements and concretes and their relation to the practical problems that arise in manufacture and use. As such it is addressed not only to the chemist and those concerned with the science and technology of silicate materials, but also to those interested in the use of concrete in building and civil engineering construction. Much attention is given to the suitability of materials, to the conditions under which concrete can excel and those where it may deteriorate and to the precautionary or remedial measures that can be adopted. First published in 1935, this is the fourth edition and the first to appear since the death of Sir Frederick Lea, the original author. Over the life of the first three editions, this book has become the authority on its subject. The fourth edition is edited by Professor Peter C. Hewlett, Director of the British Board of Agrement and visiting Industrial Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee. Professor Hewlett has brought together a distinguished body of international contributors to produce an edition which is a worthy successor to the previous editions.
  • Geological Structures and Maps

    A Practical Guide
    • 3rd Edition
    • Richard J. Lisle

This highly illustrated student guide introduces the skills of interpreting a geological map and relating it to the morphology of the most important types of geological structure. Thoroughly revised, and with more international examples, it is ideal for use by students with a minimum of tutorial supervision.Photogra... of structures are set alongside their representations on maps. The maps used in exercises have been chosen to provide all of the realism of a survey map without the huge amount of data often present, so that students can develop skills without becoming overwhelmed or confused. In particular, emphasis is placed throughout on developing the skill of three-dimensional visualization so important to the geologist.
