A journal of IFAC, the International Federation of Automatic ControlNonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems (NAHS) welcomes all original research papers on mathematical concepts, tools, and techniques from control theory, computer science, and applied mathematics for the modelling, analysis and design of hybrid dynamical systems, i.e., systems involving the interplay between discrete and continuous dynamic behaviors.Hybrid systems are ubiquitous in many branches of engineering and science as they can model broad ranges of dynamical systems. In particular, in cyber-physical systems, which integrate sensing, computation, control and communication (cyber) parts into physical objects and infrastructures, hybrid systems play an instrumental role. The description of the behavior of the cyber parts often calls for discrete models (automata, finite-state machines, switching logic, etc.), while the physical (thermal, mechanical, electrical, physical, biological) parts are well captured by continuous modelling formalisms (e.g., differential equations), thereby naturally resulting in hybrid system models such as (stochastic) hybrid automata, timed automata, switched systems, impulsive systems, jump-flow models, piecewise affine systems, non-smooth systems, etc. Also, many physical phenomena can often be well described by non-smooth or hybrid models, including mechanical systems with impacts and friction (walking robots), switched power converters and biological systems (e.g., firing neuron models).Hybrid systems can exhibit very rich dynamics and their analysis calls for new and strong theorical foundations to guarantee their stability, safety, functionality, and performance. The journal is concerned with fundamental oceanography of the deep sea in the broadest sense. This includes, ocean physics including circulation, waves, turbulence, thermodynamics, optics, acoustics, mixing, or other process studies, atmosphere ocean coupling, primary production, organic carbon fluxes, chemistry, palaeoceanography, geophysics, sedimentology, all aspects of biology from microbes to marine mammals, physiology, ecology, biogeography, evolution, behaviour and anthropological impacts.The deep sea is interpreted to be the ocean beyond the continental shelf. Papers dealing exclusively with areas inshore of the shelf break are in general more appropriate to our companion journal Continental Shelf Research.Instruments and Methods papers can describe novel hardware, vehicles, research vessels, instrumentation, sensors (physical, chemical or biological), survey methods, analysis and calibration methods as well as software and novel data-analysis techniques but with the caveat of evidence of successful use in oceanography. We do not accept applied science/technology papers on deep-sea mining, drilling, bio-prospecting or management of fish stocks in which the aim is not oceanographic research. Fluid Phase Equilibria publishes high-quality papers dealing with experimental, theoretical, and applied research related to equilibrium and transport properties of fluids, solids, and interfaces. Subjects of interest include physical/phase and chemical equilibria; equilibrium and nonequilibrium thermophysical properties; fundamental thermodynamic relations; and stability. The systems central to the journal include pure substances and mixtures of organic and inorganic materials, including polymers, biochemicals, and surfactants, with sufficient characterization of composition and purity for the results to be reproduced. Naturally occurring systems that cannot be completely characterized will be considered only if they are of high practical interest and the work leads to significant new findings. In all cases, enough detail must be given to permit independent verification, and authors are also expected to provide physical or chemical interpretations of the results.Experimental research can include measurements under all conditions of temperature, pressure, and composition, including critical and supercritical. Measurements are to be associated with systems and conditions of fundamental or applied interest, and may not be only a collection of routine data, such as physical property or solubility measurements at limited pressures and temperatures close to ambient, or surfactant studies focussed strictly on micellisation or micelle structure. Papers reporting common data must be accompanied by new physical insights and/or contemporary or new theory or techniques. All data reports and analyses will be examined by NIST for consistency with the requirements posted at http://trc.nist.gov/... and computational studies can include equations of state; correlations or predictive models; molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations; statistical thermodynamics; quantum chemistry; and other applied mathematical and computational approaches. Computers & Fluids is multidisciplinary. The term 'fluid' is interpreted in the broadest sense. Hydro- and aerodynamics, high-speed and physical gas dynamics, turbulence and flow stability, multiphase flow, rheology, tribology, aeroacoustics and fluid-structure interaction are all of interest, provided that computer technique plays a significant role in the associated studies or design methodology. Applications will be found in most branches of engineering and science: mechanical, civil, chemical, aeronautical, medical, geophysical, nuclear and oceanographic. These will involve problems of air, sea and land vehicle motion and flow physics, energy conversion and power, chemical reactors and transport processes, ocean and atmospheric effects and pollution, biomedicine, noise and acoustics, and magnetohydrodynamics amongst others. The development of numerical methods relevant to fluid flow computations, computational analysis of flow physics and fluid interactions and novel applications to flow systems and to design are pertinent to Computers & Fluids.The journal also accepts papers dealing with uncertainty quantification in fluid flow simulations, reduced-order and surrogate models for fluid flows, optimization and control. Papers dealing with machine learning approaches applied to fluid flow modeling are welcome, provided they show excellent scientific character.
