    The aim of Neuropeptides is the rapid publication of original research and review articles, dealing with the structure, distribution, actions and functions of peptides in the central and peripheral nervous systems. The explosion of research activity in this field has led to the identification of numerous naturally occurring endogenous peptides which act as neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, or trophic factors, to mediate nervous system functions. Increasing numbers of non-peptide ligands of neuropeptide receptors have been developed, which act as agonists or antagonists in peptidergic systems.The journal provides a unique opportunity of integrating the many disciplines involved in all neuropeptide research. The journal publishes articles on all aspects of the neuropeptide field, with particular emphasis on gene regulation of peptide expression, peptide receptor subtypes, transgenic and knockout mice with mutations in genes for neuropeptides and peptide receptors, neuroanatomy, physiology, behaviour, neurotrophic factors, preclinical drug evaluation, clinical studies, and clinical trials.Original papers predominate. Manuscripts may be of any length, but must be complete studies; preliminary communications are not accepted. Review articles and hypothesis papers are welcomed, and will be evaluated in the same way as experimental papers. Authors intending to submit a review are advised to communicate their intentions to the Editor, to avoid possible duplication.

Major emphasis will be placed on reviews that detail molecular mechanistic analysis of diverse areas of biomedical research, including cytokine regulation of immune responses, innate immunity, viral pathogenesis, inflammatory disorders including neuroinflammation, growth regulation in cancer, cytokines in the tumor microenvironment and cytokine-guided immunotherapeutic strategies. Priority will be given to those reviews with a focused expert perspective, provided by scientific leaders in their respective areas of research. Broad literature reviews with an overview perspective rather than a research focus should consider other Elsevier venues.

Reviews and mini-reviews are especially welcomed for those areas within endocrinology undergoing rapid changes.In addition to general articles on clinical aspects of diabetes mellitus, Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research and Reviews also presents articles on basic research in all areas of diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. Topics include prevention, diagnosis, pathogenesis, clinical management of diabetes and all its complications, including neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy, peripheral vascular disease, foot problems (amongst others), as well as atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. All aspects of disorders associated with the metabolic syndrome with a special emphasis on clinical aspects (prevalence, pathogenesis, risk factors management and prevention, etc.) of comorbid conditions such as hypertension, obesity, dyslipidemias and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease are also of relevance to the journal. Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research and Reviews also publishes papers on the general pathogenesis and prevention of diabetes. Criteria for initial considerations for papers submitted will be originality, statistical rigour, and relevance to the aims of the journal.
