Mathematics in Science and Engineering, Volume 51: Convex Structures and Economic Theory consists of an account of the theory of convex sets and its application to several basic problems that originate in economic theory and adjacent subject matter. This volume includes examples of problems pertaining to interesting static and dynamic phenomena in linear and nonlinear economic systems, as well as models initiated by Leontief, von Neumann, and Walras. The topics covered are the mathematical theorems on convexity, simple multisector linear systems, balanced growth in nonlinear systems, and efficient allocation and growth. The working of Walrasian competitive economies, special features of competitive economies, and Jacobian matrix and global univalence are also covered. This publication is suitable for advanced students of mathematical economics and related fields, but is also beneficial for anyone who wishes to become familiar with the basic ideas, methods, and results in the mathematical treatment in economic theory through a detailed exposition of a number of typical representative problems.

A Prophet in Two Countries: The Life of F.E. Simon is a biography of Franz Simon and his work in physical chemistry toward the development of nuclear energy. Born in a Jewish family in Berlin at the turn of the 20th century, at a time when Germany started repressing the Jews, Franz Simon becomes a doctor in physical chemistry and successfully conducts many scientific experiments. Germany restricts the Jews from obtaining some professions such as university professors, and though Simon successfully passes his “Habilitation” and is allowed to give lectures and collect fees, he is not given an established university appointment. He gets a professorship at the Technische Hochschule in Breslau, but does not stay there for long. Before the Nazis stepped-up their drive against Jewish emigration, Simon and his family leave for Oxford. In 1938, he becomes a British citizen. When World War II breaks, rumors spread that German refugees like Simon will face terrible punishment if Germany wins the war. This rumor only makes the German refugee-scientists more resolved in helping Britain produce the atomic bomb before Germany does. In 1940, he submits a report on Britain’s progress on nuclear energy. His method of gaseous diffusion is the most practicable and becomes the basis for many factories later on. His work on the diffusion project earns him the British C.B.E. award, which, for Simon, makes him a man, no longer without a nationality, but a proven British citizen. This biography will delight historians particularly those interested in the history of Jews in Germany and Britain. This book will also attract general readers who are interested in the lives of great scientists

Society, Schools and Progress in India presents the systematic use of education to achieve, prosperity, security, and social well-being. This book provides a concise account of the historical events and the social, religious, political, and other influences, which have combined to create India. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the major events in the history of the sub-continent, which used to be called Hindustan or India, but which, since 1947, has been divided between Pakistan and India. This text then examines the education and social services during the 200 years preceding Independence that cover the period of the British Raj. Other chapters consider the fundamental principles or assumptions by which it has been suggested that educational progress in India should be guided. The final chapter deals with the historical events and the inherent elements in the complex society of India. This book is intended to be suitable for students of sociology, government and politics, as well as education.

The Spiral After-Effect presents the visual phenomenon of the spiral after-effect in clinical investigations. This book explains how and under what conditions the illusion happens or can be modified. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the features of illusion that are similar to many of the characteristics of other movement perceptions, including vividness, velocity, and persistence. This text then examines the complex structure and the geometric function of the inducing stimulus. Other chapters consider the effects of drugs on the spiral illusion, which is rather strange when one considers the wide use of the phenomenon in patient groups who may be receiving substantial admixtures of compound for therapeutic purposes. This book discusses as well the relationship between intelligence and perception of the spiral after-effect. The final chapter deals with the conditioned after-effect. Clinical psychologists and readers who are interested in personality research will find this book useful.
