This dictionary reflects developments in physical metallurgy, namely the growth of strong ties to the physics of metals. Thus the terms relating to lattice defects and their properties and to laboratory tests revealing their effects on macroscopic behaviour of metallic materials, are extensively covered. Theory of dislocations and work hardening, high temperature deformation, fatigue and fracture, metallography and phase changes are all broadly covered, whilst terms related to technical operations such as heat and mechanical treatment as well as the corresponding equipment have been incorporated to a lesser extent. The work is based on the Dictionary of Scientific Terms from Physical Metallurgy published in parts during the years 1968-1976 in the Czechoslovak journal Metallic Materials and on its revised and extended version published in 1981 by Veda, the publishing house of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The Czech and Slovak languages of the two preceding versions have been omitted, and Spanish has been included; the Russian part has been substantially complemented by synonyms. The dictionary provides university students, research workers and engineers with the vocabulary of basic terms used in this branch of science. It is also a useful tool for translators.

The IEE Wiring Regulations Explained and Illustrated, Second Edition discusses the recommendations of the IEE Regulations for the Electrical Equipment of Buildings for the safe selection or erection of wiring installations. The book emphasizes earthing, bonding, protection, and circuit design of electrical wirings. The text reviews the fundamental requirements for safety, earthing systems, the earth fault loop impedance, and supplementary bonding. The book also describes the different types of protection, such as protection against mechanical damage, overcurrent, under voltage (which prevents automatic restarting of machinery and devices in the event of a voltage drop). The text explains in detail the stages of the designing process of electrical installation that include the design current, protection rating, correction factors, cable current-carrying capacity, cable size, voltage drop, shock risk constraints, and thermal constraints. The electrician should test the finished installation before energizing it by following a sequence of tests recommended in the Regulations. The book is suitable for electricians, technicians, building foreman, house contractors, as well as for students studying to be licensed electricians and technicians.

Fundamental Studies in Computer Science, Volume 6: Automated Theorem Proving: A Logical Basis aims to organize, augment, and record the major conceptual advances in automated theorem proving. The publication first examines the role of logical systems and basic resolution. Discussions focus on the Davis-Putnam procedure, ground resolution, semantic trees, general resolution procedure, basic concepts of first-order logic, refutation procedures, and preparation of formulas. The text then takes a look at the refinements of resolution, including unit preference and set-of-support, ordered clause deductions, and setting and linear refinements. The monograph tackles subsumption, resolution with equality, and resolution and problem reduction format. Topics include problem reduction format, paramodulation and linear refinements, paramodulation, and subsumption for linear and nonlinear procedures. The publication is a dependable reference for students and researchers interested in automated theorem proving.

Developments in Geotechnical Engineering, Volume 19: Stabilized Earth Roads surveys soil stabilization theory and practice. This work is divided into nine chapters that discuss the physical, chemical, and soil mechanics principles of soil stabilization. The first chapter is an introduction to the history, methods, and importance of soil stabilization in road construction. The next chapters deal with the fundamental definitions of soil physics and the interactions of soil components, as well as the concept of mechanical soil stabilization. Considerable chapters examine soil stabilization with several materials, such as cement, lime, bitumen, and tar. The last chapters describe the soil-stabilization methods with various chemicals, including chlorides, phosphoric acid, and natural and synthetic polymers. These chapters also consider the design of stabilized earth roads. This book is of value to geologists and civil engineers.

The Engineer's Clean Air Handbook is written for engineers but in a language which should be understandable to anyone who may be directly involved in or concerned about atmospheric contamination. It concentrates on achieving clean air and on the more general aspects of pollution. The book begins with the description and make-up of the atmosphere, the size and nature of the atmospheric content, sources of contamination, and risk assessment from atmospheric contamination. Subsequent sections focus on air filters and filtration systems, instrumentation for monitoring and control of atmospheric contamination, ventilation and the quality of breathing air, and the relationship of atmospheric contamination and health. Environmentalists, engineers, and ecologists will find the book useful.

Mechanical Behaviors of Carbon Nanotubes: Theoretical and Numerical Approaches presents various theoretical and numerical studies on mechanical behaviors of carbon nanotubes. The main theoretical aspects included in the book contain classical molecular dynamics simulation, atomistic-continuum theory, atomic finite element method, continuum plate, nonlocal continuum plate, and shell models. Detailed coverage is also given to structural and elastic properties, trace of large deformation, buckling and post-buckling behaviors, fracture, vibration characteristics, wave propagation, and the most promising engineering applications. This book not only illustrates the theoretical and numerical methods for analyzing the mechanical behavior of carbon nanotubes, but also contains computational results from experiments that have already taken place.

Jones' Instrument Technology, Volume 1: Mechanical Measurements, Fourth Edition, provides a comprehensive discussion of the design, operation, and application of various instruments for different types of measurements. The material has been grouped by application, but supplemented by one or two ""techniques"" chapters. The text is primarily a ""stand alone"" description of current practice. For the greatest part, readers will learn most from it simply by reading what it says itself. Because this book does not go into the greatest detail, most chapters feature a listing of more specialized books where particular subjects are dealt with more fully. The book covers instrumentation for measurements of flow, viscosity, length, strain, level and volume, vibration, force, density, pressure, vacuum, and particle size. It is aimed at a technician readership, as were earlier editions. Specialist instrument designers can find in this book a sound foundation on which they can build. Would-be graduate engineers who do not specialize in instrumentation will also find the broad coverage they need.

Geometric Measure Theory: A Beginner's Guide, Fifth Edition provides the framework readers need to understand the structure of a crystal, a soap bubble cluster, or a universe. The book is essential to any student who wants to learn geometric measure theory, and will appeal to researchers and mathematicians working in the field. Brevity, clarity, and scope make this classic book an excellent introduction to more complex ideas from geometric measure theory and the calculus of variations for beginning graduate students and researchers. Morgan emphasizes geometry over proofs and technicalities, providing a fast and efficient insight into many aspects of the subject, with new coverage to this edition including topical coverage of the Log Convex Density Conjecture, a major new theorem at the center of an area of mathematics that has exploded since its appearance in Perelman's proof of the Poincaré conjecture, and new topical coverage of manifolds taking into account all recent research advances in theory and applications.
