Lectures on Invariant Subspaces grew out of a series of lectures given gave at the University of Uppsala in the spring of 1962, and again in Berkeley the following semester. Since the subject is rather loosely defined the lecture style seemed appropriate also for this written version. The book is written for a graduate student who knows a little, but not necessarily very much, about analytic functions and about Hilbert space. The book contains 11 lectures and begins with a discussion of analytic functions. This is followed by lectures covering invariant subspaces, individual theorems, invariant subspaces in Lp, invariant subspaces in the line, and analytic vector functions. Subsequent lectures cover vectorial function theory, inner functions, range functions, and factoring of operator functions.

Submicroscopic Structure of the Inner Ear focuses on the submicroscopic structure of the inner ear of mammals, as investigated in guinea pigs, cats, chinchillas, squirrel-monkeys, and rats. This book consists of experimental investigations, such as the efferent innervation of the organ of Corti; ototoxicity of some antibiotics; acoustic trauma; and circulation of the labyrinthine fluids. Investigations on the human labyrinth, normal and affected by Meniere's disease, are also covered. This text likewise describes the combined electron-microscopic and electrophysiological research studies that provide a basis for a correlation of the submicroscopic structure and function of the sensory cells. A review of the main light-microscopic features is included for those who are not familiar with the morphology of the inner ear. This publication is intended for students or individuals working on the morphology of the ear, but is also a good reference for anatomists, otologists, zoologists, psychologists, and neurophysiologists interested in the structure of the inner ear.

Wenner-Gren Center International Symposium Series, Volume 15: Vestibular Function on Earth and in Space provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of vestibular research. This book discusses the problems concerned with space, with emphasis on the importance of the vestibular apparatus in space flight. Organized into 32 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the mechanisms and processes for creating the chemical composition of endolymph. This text then examines the speculative comparisons between prolonged exposure in a manne weightless space station and in a rotating space station. Other chapters consider the relationships between vestibular nystagmus and degradation of visual acuity when the vestibular stimuli interfere with voluntary efforts to see specific visual detail. This book discusses as well the concepts concerning the distribution of function between semicircular canals and otolith organs. The final chapter deals with the method for selective marking of neurons after axonal transection. This book is a valuable resource for otologists and scientists.

Static Electromagnetic Frequency Changers is about the theory, design, construction, and applications of static electromagnetic frequency changers, devices that used for multiplication or division of alternating current frequency. It is originally published in the Russian language. This book is organized into five chapters. The first three chapters introduce the readers to the principles of operation, the construction, and the potential applications of static electromagnetic frequency changers and to the principles of their design. The two concluding chapters use some hitherto unpublished work of the author and provide examples of the design of frequency doublers and triplers. This book will be of interest to engineers and scientific workers, engaged in the field of automatic control electrical machines and in other fields of technology connected with the use of alternating current above normal supply frequencies.

Magnetic Fields, Special Relativity and Potential Theory is an introduction to electromagnetism, special relativity, and potential theory, with emphasis on the magnetic field of steady currents (magnetostatics). Topics covered range from the origin of the magnetic field and the magnetostatic scalar potential to magnetization, electromagnetic induction and magnetic energy, and the displacement current and Maxwell's equations. This volume is comprised of five chapters and begins with an overview of magnetostatics, followed by a chapter on the methods of solving potential problems drawn from electrostatics, magnetism, current flow, and gravitation. Relaxing the constraint of stationary steady currents, the next chapter considers electromagnetic induction when the current strengths in closed circuits vary or when the circuits move. This leads to the necessity of assessing the breakdown of Newtonian ideas and the introduction of special relativity. When the constraint of closed circuits is further relaxed and the motion of charges in open circuits is taken into account, the discussion turns to displacement current because of the relativistic theory already set up, leading to Maxwell's equations. This book will be a valuable resource for undergraduate students of physics.

International Conference on Infrared Physics (CIRP) is a collection of papers from the proceedings of a conference held in Zurich on August 11-15, 1975. The book reviews the study of thermal radiation with emphasis on the spectral energy density of small blackbody cavities. The text also deals with the concept of density of states of quantum-size effects in statistical mechanics of finite non-interacting systems. One paper discusses the interaction of radiation with matter, while another presentation reviews the theory of cavity radiation based on multiple reflections within the cavity. The book then presents developments in infrared detectors, particularly the performance of photon and thermal detectors in the heterodyne mode. One paper examines the materials that can be used for making filters in the far infrared region using a Michelson interferometer to determine the region of spectra and a germanium bolometer as the detector. The book then cites an example where a high resolution Michelson interferometer is used on a NASA C141 infrared airborne telescope where scientists study the far infrared emission lines from the HII regions. The collection will prove useful to nuclear physicists and scientists, academicians, and researchers whose works are concerned with infrared physics and engineering.
