The ever-growing demand for commercial activities at sea has meant that ships are rapidly developing and that the rules governing their construction and operation are changing. Practical Ship Design records these changes, their outcomes and the reasoning behind them.It deals with every aspect of ship design and handles a wide range of both merchant ships and naval ships with authority. It provides coverage of cargo ships and passenger ships, tugs, dredgers and other service craft. It also includes concept design, detail design, structural design, hydrodynamics design, the effect of regulations, the preparation of specifications and matters of costs and economics.Drawing on the author's extensive practical experience, Practical Ship Design is likely to interest everybody involved in the design, construction, repair and operation of ships. Students and the most experienced professionals will all benefit from the book's vast store of design data and its conclusions and recommendations.
  • Vibration of Mindlin Plates

    Programming the p-Version Ritz Method
    • 1st Edition
    • K.M. Liew + 3 more
    • English
Over the last several years, the four authors have jointly conducted research into the analysis of vibrating Mindlin plates as a collaborative project between Nanyang Technological University, The National University of Singapore, and The University of Queensland. The research was prompted by the fact that there is a dearth of vibration results for Mindlin plates when compared to classical thin plate solutions. To generate the vibration results, the authors have successfully employed the Ritz method for general plate shapes and boundary conditions. The Ritz method, once thought to be awkward for general plate analysis, can be automated through suitable trial functions (for displacements) that satisfy the geometric plate boundary conditions a priori. This work has been well-received by academics and researchers, as indicated by the continual requests for the authors' papers and the Ritz software codes. This monograph is written with the view to share this so-called p-Ritz method for the vibration analysis of Mindlin plates and its software codes with the research community. To the authors' knowledge, the monograph contains the first published Ritz plate software codes of its kind.
  • Reinforced Plastics Durability

    • 1st Edition
    • G. Pritchard
    • English
Reinforced plastics composites are increasingly in demand for the huge range of long-term applications - not surprisingly, as they are amongst the best materials in the world for durability. This exceptionally user-friendly guide has been written for engineers, designers and managers who are considering using reinforced plastics in applicationswhere a long product life is essential, including buildings, bridges, boats, tanks, pipes and swimming pools. The book is clearly written and easily accessible to those with no background in composite science, although detailed references are provided for those wishing to pursue any area in more depth. After introducing the key concepts, there are chapters focusing on the effects of outdoor weathering, solvent and water attack, high temperature and repetitive stress. Experience with specific applications over time is discussed, and repair is considered. The use of computer techniques in predicting durability is outlined and there are some case histories.
  • Inverse Problems in Engineering Mechanics

    • 1st Edition
    • Masataka Tanaka + 1 more
    • English
Inverse problems can be found in many topics of engineering mechanics. There are many successful applications in the fields of inverse problems (non-destructive testing and characterization of material properties by ultrasonic or X-ray techniques, thermography, etc.). Generally speaking, the inverse problems are concerned with the determination of the input and the characteristics of a mechanical system from some of the output from the system. Mathematically, such problems are ill-posed and have to be overcome through development of new computational schemes, regularization techniques, objective functionals, and experimental procedures.Seventy-t... papers were presented at the International Symposium on Inverse Problems in Mechanics (ISIP '98) held in March of 1998 in Nagano, where recent developments in the inverse problems in engineering mechanics and related topics were discussed. The main themes were: mathematical and computational aspects of the inverse problems, parameter or system identification, shape determination, sensitivity analysis, optimization, material property characterization, ultrasonic non-destructive testing, elastodynamic inverse problems, thermal inverse problems, and other engineering applications.
  • Video Scrambling & Descrambling

    for Satellite & Cable TV
    • 3rd Edition
    • Rudolf F. Graf + 1 more
    • English
Video Scrambling and Descrambling for Satellite & Cable TV provides the "how and why" of encoding and decoding video signals. Most of the currently used methods are discussed, with the necessary technical background. Since digital scrambling methods will undoubtedly supplant analog methods, information on analog/digital conversion, phase-locked loops, digital techniques, and IC data sheets are included. In this new edition the authors incorporate the many developments in this field since 1986. They elaborate the basic information on scrambling given in the first edition, and discuss current scrambling systems such as Tri-mode, SSAVI, and Videocipher II. Looking back at the "gloom and doom" predictions made in the 80s, they discuss which have proven correct, which have yet to be realized, and which have been wrong. Their discussion of basic circuitry now includes some new IC devices, and the section on political, legal and consumer aspects of scrambling has been completely updated. New digitization techniques and construction data, decoder circuitry, audio scrambling techniques, manufacturers' data sheets, US Patents, and current developments such as digital audio are also covered in this updated version.
  • Deep Challenge: Our Quest for Energy Beneath the Sea

    • 1st Edition

  • A Unified Approach to the Finite Element Method and Error Analysis Procedures

    • 1st Edition
    • Julian A. T. Dow
    • English
A Unified Approach to the Finite Element Method and Error Analysis Procedures provides an in-depth background to better understanding of finite element results and techniques for improving accuracy of finite element methods. Thus, the reader is able to identify and eliminate errors contained in finite element models. Three different error analysis techniques are systematically developed from a common theoretical foundation: 1) modeling erros in individual elements; 2) discretization errors in the overall model; 3) point-wise errors in the final stress or strain results.Thoroughly class tested with undergraduate and graduate students. A Unified Approach to the Finite Element Method and Error Analysis Procedures is sure to become an essential resource for students as well as practicing engineers and researchers.
  • Macro-Engineering and the Earth

World Projects for Year 2000 and Beyond
    • 1st Edition
    • U W Kitzinger + 1 more
    • English
This work delivers ideas, comments and projects on energy, communications, transport, management, human resources, and financial and legal issues which macroengineering can contribute towards the solution of the Earth's environmental problems. Some 20 engineers and scholars identify problems in the next century whose solutions call for international policy planning and a more collaborative, peaceful and prosperous world order.Imaginative concepts employ forward thinking for applying technology in revolutionary projects. The book presents results of research on a triple helical turbine capable of extracting vast amounts of energy from slow-moving water, an invention which could harness rivers and ocean currents, rendering high dams (with their political, social and ecological implications) redundant. These turbines are already in mass production in the USA for use in the Gulf Stream to produce energy and hydrogen fuel, and can also be used to harness power from the wind.Another project, for which the technology is already available, will harvest solar energy by satellites stationed beyond our atmosphere and beam it to the Earth; and yet another calls for planetary defence of Earth against asteroid collisions. The environmental section discusses large projects for changing our climate, planning and costing for a sub-Mediterranean aqueduct connecting the River Rhone in France with Algeria, and plans for intensive fish farming of the oceans. The role of satellites includes telemedicine, and there are Swiss plans for further tunnelling through the Alps. Project management sections include the formation of a military-civilian conservation corps, financial and legal issues, macro-projects in China, and a forecast of 21st century macro-problems.
