The arteries to the upper extremities can be involved at multiple levels by a variety of diseases. Because of the critical sensitivity of motor function and sensation in the arms and hands, minor degrees of ischemia can have major clinical significance. It is essential to understand the exact pathologic process and the sites of involvement to provide proper therapy. This issue will include articles such as: The diagnosis of vaso-occlusive disease within the hand, Botox in the management of vascospastic disorders, Vascular injuries in sports activities, Present options for the management of hypothenar hammer syndrome and many more!

Psoriasis is the most prevalent autoimmune disease in the U.S. • ~125 million people worldwide have psoriasis. Commonly misunderstood and interpreted as a “cosmetic” problem, psoriasis is a complex and potentially debilitating disease; nearly 60% of people with psoriasis reported their disease to be a large problem in their everyday life. This issue of Dermatologic Clinics devoted exclusively to psoriasis is edited by two leaders of the International Psoriasis Council, Dr Alan Menter and Dr Chris Griffiths. Topics include: Genetics of psoriasis; Immunopathogenesis of psoriasis; Phenotypical expressions of psoriasis; Psoriasis as a systemic disease with multiple comorbidities; Outcomes measures in the assessment of psoriasis in clinical practice and trials; Update on topical therapies for mild to moderate psoriasis; Phototherapy and photochemotherapy (PUVA) for psoriasis; Current and future oral systemic therapies for psoriasis; Current biological therapies for psoriasis; Future biological therapies for psoriasis; Psoriatic arthritis for the dermatologist; Pharmacogenomics and the future of psoriasis therapies. This information that goes to the heart of clinical practice is equally appropriate, beyond dermatologists, for internal medicine clinicians, primary care physicians, bone & joint specialists; hematologists/oncolo... and researchers in genetic targeted therapy development.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is produced during pregnancy by the embryo. It promotes progesterone production by corpus luteal cells. It also functions in pregnancy to promote angiogenesis in uterine vasculature, it immuno-blands the invading placental tissue so it is not rejected by the maternal uterine tissues, promotes the growth of the uterus in line with the growth of the fetus, promotes the differentiation of growing cytotrophoblast cells, promotes the quiescence of contractions in the uterine myometrium during the course of pregnancy, and also has function in growth and development of fetal organs. The first edition described the detailed biology, clinical chemistry, and clinical perspectives of hCG and associated molecules, and examines hCG, hyperglycosylated hCG and hCG free ß-subunit, 3 separate and independent molecules with totally sovereign physiological functions. The second edition will include coverage of the many new discoveries that have been made in the last five years: hCG analogues may be the actual driving signal of all human cancers. The editor estimates that 40% of the out of date material will be excluded and replaced with 40% of the exciting new findings. The book will also have a much clearer pregnancy and cancer focus.

Over the last few decades magnetism has seen an enormous expansion into a variety of different areas of research, notably the magnetism of several classes of novel materials that share with truly ferromagnetic materials only the presence of magnetic moments. Volume 23 of the Handbook of Magnetic Materials, like the preceding volumes, has a dual purpose. With contributions from leading authorities in the field, it includes a variety of self-contained introductions to a given area in the field of magnetism without requiring recourse to the published literature. It is also a reference for scientists active in magnetism research, providing readers with novel trends and achievements in magnetism. In each of these articles an extensive description is given in graphical as well as in tabular form, with much emphasis being placed on the discussion of the experimental material within the framework of physics, chemistry and material science.

Geomorphological Fieldwork addresses a topic that always remains popular within the geosciences and environmental science. More specifically, the volume conveys a growing legacy of field-based learning for young geomorphologists that can be used as a student book for field-based university courses and postgraduate research requiring fieldwork or field schools. The editors have much experience of field-based learning within geomorphology and extend this to physical geography. The topics covered are relevant to basic geomorphology as well as applied approaches in environmental and cultural geomorphology. The book integrates a physical-human approach to geography, but focuses on physical geography and geomorphology from an integrated field-based geoscience perspective.

This issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America provides a summary of several more common maternal-fetal-infan... infectious diseases. Several experts in the field of maternal and perinatal infection have contributed to this issue to provide an overview of the up-to-date preventive strategies, screening and diagnostic methods, and treatment guidelines. While guidelines such as universal vaccination to prevent influenza during pregnancy are fairly well justified by supporting data, there is much uncertainty about the appropriate screening guidelines for conditions such as cytomegalovirus, where the lack of a proven effective treatment diminishes the value of screening. Moreover, increasing issues of antibiotic resistance and the lack of significant advancement in developing newer effective agents imply that both providers and health care facilities must follow guidelines of antimicrobial stewardship (ie, coordinated efforts to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobials). It is our hope that this issue will aid providers in navigating these complex issues while also understanding the current state-of-the-science
