  • Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

    • ISSN: 0965-1748
This international journal publishes original contributions and mini-reviews in the fields of insect biochemistry and insect molecular biology. Main areas of interest are neurochemistry, hormone and pheromone biochemistry, enzymes and metabolism, hormone action and gene regulation, gene characterization and structure, pharmacology, immunology and cell and tissue culture. Papers on the biochemistry and molecular biology of other groups of arthropods are published if of general interest to the readership. Technique papers will be considered for publication if they significantly advance the field of insect biochemistry and molecular biology in the opinion of the Editors and Editorial Board.Requirements for RNAi Experiments in Lepidopteran InsectsGiven the growing concerns regarding the reproducibility of RNA interference (RNAi) experiments in lepidopteran species, the Editorial Board has established the following requirements to guide the evaluation of manuscripts employing RNAi in these insects. Authors are asked to review these criteria carefully and ensure that their submissions meet the standards necessary for consideration in this journal.1. Use of alternative and complementary methods: Whenever appropriate and feasible, authors are encouraged to consider established genetic approaches such as CRISPR/Cas‑mediated gene knockout prior to relying on RNA interference (RNAi). When RNAi is employed, results should be supported by complementary approaches, including pharmacological inhibition or other independent validation methods.2. Minimization of off‑target effects: To reduce the possibility of off‑target silencing, at least two non‑overlapping dsRNA sequences targeting the same gene must be tested separately.3. Rigorous experimental controls: RNAi experiments must include a non-treatment (or vehicle) control, as well as multiple dsRNA treatment controls (such as dsRNA against unrelated genes like GFP, as well as dsRNA against other endogenous genes, such as those in the same gene family) to demonstrate specificity of the observed phenotypes.4. Demonstration of specific and significant knockdown: Authors must provide quantitative evidence (e.g., qRT‑PCR or other validated quantitative assays) showing that expression of the target gene is significantly reduced by the specific dsRNA treatments, but not by control dsRNAs. A minimum of three independent biological replicates is required for each treatment. Whenever possible, knockdown should also be confirmed by an independent method, such as quantification of the encoded protein.5. Consideration of biological and technical variability: The editorial board recognizes that factors such as dsRNA delivery method, developmental stage, and tissue accessibility can strongly influence RNAi outcomes. Manuscripts will therefore be evaluated on a case‑by‑case basis, taking these experimental constraints into account.

Papers on the social aspects of geriatrics will be accepted if they are of general interest regarding the epidemiology of aging and the efficiency and working methods of the social organizations for the health care of the elderly.
  • Journal of Biomedical Informatics

    • ISSN: 1532-0464
Endorsed by the American Medical Informatics AssociationThe Journal of Biomedical Informatics (JBI) is the premier methodology journal in the field of biomedical informatics. JBI publishes research on new methodologies and techniques that have general applicability and form the basis for the evolving science of biomedical informatics. Papers should focus on a real-world biomedical or clinical problem, develop a novel approach to address the problem, and evaluate its appropriateness in comparison to the current state-of-the-art (SoA) methods. Involvement of healthcare professionals in motivating the work and evaluation of results is expected.Focus Areas and Topics of InterestJBI seeks to publish papers that make a conceptual contribution to the field, typically by describing an innovation in methodology or technique or by discussing substantive generalizable lessons that have been learned in the context of an informatics project. When a methodological contribution has a theoretical basis, that theory is an appropriate emphasis for papers as well. Research papers may also present a novel "method of methods" explaining how to apply the existing methods to a space of biomedical problems that share unique characteristics influencing the choice of methods.JBI publishes papers on a wide range of informatics topics. However, across these topics, papers must build on deep understanding and utilization of medical domain knowledge and should consider pragmatic translation for clinical care or applications. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) clinical decision support, patient safety, natural language processing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, knowledge representation for healthcare, translational bioinformatics, clinical research informatics, and clinical informatics. Additional considerations for papers in the areas of translational bioinformatics, machine learning, security and privacy are provided below. Irrespective of the topic, papers must focus on novel informatics methods and its comparison to the current approaches.Manuscrip... can be submitted in the following categories: original research, methodological review, commentaries, special communication, letters to the editor, book reviews, and editorials (see additional details on each of these categories below). Given the international readership of JBI, country-specific health systems or approaches will be considered only if they offer generalizable lessons that are relevant to the broader readership, regardless of their country, language, culture, or health system.Specific considerations for manuscripts in certain topical areas have also been provided in recent editorials. If you are considering an article with a focus on translational bioinformatics , please read this editorial. Biologic discoveries based on the use of routine informatics techniques may be important biologic contributions, but are not suitable for JBI. In addition, please note that JBI publishes bioinformatics papers only if they deal with issues in translational (human) science (e.g., translational bioinformatics papers). If you are considering an article describing a new machine learning approach, please read this editorial. Machine learning papers would be considered only if the methods that are introduced demonstrate substantial novelty and advancement beyond the current SoA and their evaluation is sound and includes an assessment of the potential of the method to be used in clinical practice. For example, submissions reporting publishing marginally SoA findings without an in-depth analysis or discussion of how the methods are potentially generalizable (or applicable in a wider setting) would not be considered. Novel and important clinical problems addressed by existing machine learning methods may warrant Special Communication papers if their discussion includes novel insights or lessons learned for future research in such domains.Authors considering an article on biomedical privacy and security, please read this editorial. To be considered, the privacy and security methods that are introduced should demonstrate substantial novelty and advancement beyond the SoA, should be specific to the biomedical informatics domain, and their practical application and/or likely real-world usefulness in the biomedical domain. Please note that papers related to signal processing, imaging, medical devices, or communication networks are outside the scope of the journal unless they combine knowledge-intensive approaches involving ontologies. Please also consult the editorial that explains where to direct Artificial Intelligence in Medicine-related manuscripts for peer review and possible publication, considering the different scope of the three Elsevier medical informatics journals: JBI, Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, and Intelligence-based Medicine.

  • Journal of Food Engineering

    • ISSN: 0260-8774
Journal of Food Engineering (JFE), since its first issue in 1982, aims to provide an international forum for publication of original research papers on any subject at the interface between food and engineering, particularly those of relevance to industry with emphasis on novelty, engineering rigor and clear perspectives of applications, including:Engineerin... properties of foods, food (multi-phase and multi-scale) physics and physical chemistry with their effects on food processing with novelty and relevance of engineering properties to food manufacturing.Innova... methods, sensors and actuators for food processing, quality and safety, packaging, storage, and supply chain, Advanced engineering aspects of analysis, design and optimization of food processing, control of food processing equipment and plant,Artificial intelligence and data-driven innovations with an emphasis on industrial applications, andSustainability and economics of the proposed solutions for food engineering, including alternative processes. With respect to process design and optimization, mathematical modeling studies with validation and process applications in conventional and novel processing illustrating food engineering principles are of particular interest. The use of specific software in modeling studies should avoid using the black-box approach and present the fundamental details of the applied modeling approach. Design and optimization studies should demonstrate engineering rigor rather than only observational comparisons. For analytical techniques (such as imaging methods and image processing with machine learning, and the use artificial intelligence), the manuscripts should demonstrate the required scientific background and potential innovative food process applications. Food packaging related manuscripts focusing on quantitative analysis (e.g., release kinetics, diffusion modelling, novel shelf-life modelling methods) are also of interest for publication in JFE.For review articles, critical comprehensive reviews should present a detailed background of the given subject with critical opinions of the authors suggesting challenges and priorities for the future research. The authors must have a significant scientific background on the topic to discuss the insights obtained from the literature with a critical assessment of the food engineering rigor of the reviewed works. Our expectation of engineering rigor in works published in JFE has various aspects:clear presentation of the underlying (e.g., physical or chemical) mechanism and its rationale within the (food) engineering discipline,developme... of theoretical considerations that are well grounded in physical/chemical sciences, experimental design and approaches described in a sufficient manner so that they can be replicated in another laboratory, data analysis based on well-established statistical methods, development of mathematical models with validation and for broader application of results, discussion of results that demonstrate how the work uniquely contributes to new knowledge, andwhen appropriate, application of results to industrial-scale problem-solving, with an emphasis on quantitative approach and analysis.

  • Comparative Immunology, Microbiology & Infectious Diseases

    • ISSN: 0147-9571
An International Journal focused on Comparative Veterinary and Medical ResearchComparative Immunology, Microbiology & Infectious Diseases aims to respond to the concept of "One Medicine - One Health" and to provide a venue for scientific exchange. Based on the concept of "Comparative Medicine" interdisciplinary cooperation between specialists in human and animal medicine is of mutual interest and benefit. Therefore, there is need to combine the respective interest of physicians, veterinarians and other health professionals for comparative studies relevant to either human or animal medicine .CIMID is mainly focusing on applied veterinary medicine with a particular focus on zoonotic pathogens. It includes etiology, biology, clinical diseases, epidemiology, diagnosis, control. Experimental in vitro studies and studies on laboratory animals are generally not accepted. Non infectious diseases are not accepted. Specific focus on human diseases can only be accepted if it concerns major zoonotic pathogens. Reviews are generally not accepted, except if they contain new or recent developments. CIMID does not accept manuscript focusing on Mycology. The journal is open to subjects of common interest related to the immunology, immunopathology, microbiology, parasitology and epidemiology of human and animal infectious diseases, especially zoonotic infections, and animal models of human infectious diseases. The role of environmental factors in disease emergence is emphasized. CIMID is mainly focusing on applied veterinary and human medicine rather than on fundamental experimental research.Original research papers of high quality and novelty on aspects of host response, molecular biology, pathogenesis, control and prevention and treatment of microbial and parasitic diseases of domestic animals and wildlife (if the infections are of zoonotic interest and/or in relation with domestic animals and/or can serve as a model for human diseases). Papers dealing primarily with epidemiology will be considered if they demonstrate a clear impact on the clinical features, pathogenesis or prevention of a disease. Similarly, articles addressing microbiology, parasitology, immunology or pathogenesis must address issues of comparative medical interest. Manuscripts focusing on probiotics or diseases and/or immunology of fishes are not part of our overall scope, as they are better fitted to more specialized journals. Manuscripts dealing with food hygiene and food risk are not part of our overall scope. Manuscripts dealing strictly with experimental design and fundamental research may not be considered depending the overall consequences for the knowledge of a disease.Review articles can be accepted. They should focus either on a pathogen or on analyses of the mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions including epidemiological studies. Proposal for such manuscripts should be submitted to the Co-Editors in Chief for approval before submitting the manuscript.Papers focusing solely on diagnostic techniques, case reports or drug trials will generally not be accepted. Papers of geographically limited interest, which repeat what had been established elsewhere, will not be considered. The readership of the journal is global. The Editors reserve the right to suggest submission to another journal for those papers which they feel would be more appropriate for consideration by that journal.Papers will be rejected if standards of care of, or procedures performed on animals are not beyond those expected of humane veterinary care. Standards must, at least, meet the International Guiding Principles for Biomedical Research involving Animals, as issued by the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences. The Editors in Chief work in tandem with the Editorial Board to select the most appropriate Guest Editors who are known experts in any given special issue's topic. The Guest Editors are responsible for creating an author invite list, which is then reviewed and augmented via Editorial Board evaluation prior to the Guest Editor inviting the contributing authors. The Guest Editors can also opt for the open call on the webpage along with the author's list.Once the papers for any of our curated short review special issues are received by COPHYS, the editorial staff determines their suitability for review. Submissions are checked that they are according to journal guidelines before being sent for external peer review by the Guest Editor via the submission platform. Each submission must be reviewed by no fewer than two independent experts who assess the quality, originality, and novelty of the work.COPHYS Guest Editors are not permitted to handle the review of their own contributions to ensure a thorough and fair review of their manuscripts. Guest Editors are not privy to the referees' names or affiliations for any submission under consideration where a Guest Editor is a contributor. Guest Editors must declare a potential conflict of interest for any submission under consideration and inform the journal Editors in Chief who then determine the appropriate course of action. For additional information about the role and responsibility of Guest Editors, please review the Elsevier Guest Editor Guide. As articles of the issue are accepted, the Editors in Chief perform a final evaluation of the articles before publication.Discover... - Articles receive high visibility and maximum exposure on an industry-leading platform that reaches a vast global audience.Current Opinion and Research - Current Opinion in Physiology builds on Elsevier's reputation for excellence in scientific publishing and long-standing commitment to communicating reproducible biomedical research targeted at improving human health.
