Bioactive Carbohydrates and Dietary Fibre

Bioactive Carbohydrates and Dietary Fibre is intended to be an international journal focused on dietary fibre, and bioactive carbohydrates (including bioactive polysaccharides, oligosaccharides and glycoproteins. It will include original studies and comprehensive reviews on the primary structure, molecular characteristics including conformation, size and shape, and bioactivities demonstrated by studies using in vitro, cell culture, animal and human clinical trials for understanding the action mechanisms and efficacy of bioactive carbohydrates from plants, fungi, animals and produced by biotechnology. Specific bioactivities such as reducing serum cholesterol, modulating blood glucose and insulin levels, fermentability in the gastrointestinal track, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, immune regulatory and anti-oxidant activities demonstrated by these bioactive carbohydrates are the main focus of this journal. It also covers the areas of interaction of dietary fibres, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides and glycoproteins with food matrices which may enhance or alter their efficacy, shelf-life stability of the bioactivities. Papers will cover such issues as: • Structural characterization of bioactive polysaccharides, oligosaccharides and glycoproteins • Conformation and molecular characteristics of bioactive polysaccharides, oligosaccharides and glycoproteins • Bioactivities of polysaccharides including: anti-cancer, immune modulation, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant etc • New anti-cancer polysaccharides from herbs • Recent advances in bioactive polysaccharides, oligosaccharides and glycoproteins • Analysis and physicochemical characterization of soluble and insoluble dietary fibre • Effects of dietary fibre on post-prandial blood glucose and/or insulin levels • Effect of dietary fibre on blood total and/or LDL cholesterol levels; • Effects of dietary fibre on gut function and ecology of microflora • Role of a diet rich in soluble fibre in reducing body weight • Development of dietary fibre industry • Animal and clinical trial studies • Updates on regulatory changes and legal constraints on nutritional dietary fibre and other food hydrocolloids The subject borders on medicine but is not a medical subject. The common factor for published papers is “bioactivity” and it's influence on health. Origin, husbanding, extraction, characterization, purification, cell culture, animal and clinical trials leading towards a medical or food supplemental applications will be considered. To be considered for this journal the research needs to cross-over from chemistry/biochemistry into biological investigation, with opportunities too for those who work on immune systems to contribute. Biochemical Systematics and Ecology is devoted to the publication of original papers and reviews, both submitted and invited, in two subject areas: I) the application of biochemistry to problems relating to systematic biology of organisms (biochemical systematics); II) the role of biochemistry in interactions between organisms or between an organism and its environment (biochemical ecology). In the Biochemical Systematics subject area, comparative studies of the distribution of (secondary) metabolites within a wider taxon (e.g. genus or family) are welcome. Comparative studies, encompassing multiple accessions of each of the taxa within their distribution are particularly encouraged. Welcome are also studies combining classical chemosystematic studies (such as comparative HPLC-MS or GC-MS investigations) with (macro-) molecular phylogenetic studies. Studies that involve the comparative use of compounds to help differentiate among species such as adulterants or substitutes that illustrate the applied use of chemosystematics are welcome. In contrast, studies solely employing macromolecular phylogenetic techniques (gene sequences, RAPD studies etc.) will be considered out of scope. Discouraged are manuscripts that report known or new compounds from a single source taxon without addressing a systematic hypothesis. Also considered out of scope are studies using outdated and hard to reproduce macromolecular techniques such as RAPDs in combination with standard chemosystematic techniques such as GC-FID and GC-MS. In the Biochemical Ecology subject area, studies addressing the role compounds play in the ecology of the organisms producing them are invited. Moreover, manuscripts that address hypothesis associated with the influence of factors such as altitude, geography, and seasonal variation on the expression of primary and secondary metabolites are encouraged. Research papers should generally represent a complete investigation and not preliminary data. Preliminary reports will only be considered where findings are of sufficient interest to justify rapid publication. New Source Reports will only be considered in cases where a significant chemosystematic or ecological finding is reported. New Source Reports have to be written in a standard format (Example).

BBA Bioenergetics covers the area of biological membranes involved in energy transfer and conversion. In particular, it focuses on the structures obtained by X-ray crystallography and other approaches, and molecular mechanisms of the components of photosynthesis, mitochondrial and bacterial respiration, oxidative phosphorylation, motility and transport. It spans applications of structural biology, molecular modeling, spectroscopy and biophysics in these systems, through bioenergetic aspects of mitochondrial biology including biomedicine aspects of energy metabolism in mitochondrial disorders, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, aging, diabetes and even cancer. BBA Gene Regulatory Mechanisms includes reports that describe novel insights into mechanisms of transcriptional, post-transcriptional and translational gene regulation. Special emphasis is placed on papers that identify epigenetic mechanisms of gene regulation, including chromatin, modification, and remodeling. This section also encompasses mechanistic studies of regulatory proteins and protein complexes; regulatory or mechanistic aspects of RNA processing; regulation of expression by small RNAs; genomic analysis of gene expression patterns; and modeling of gene regulatory pathways. Papers describing gene promoters, enhancers, silencers or other regulatory DNA regions must incorporate significant functions studies. The journal does not favorably review manuscripts identifying a miRNA-target pair without additional insights into the repression mechanism or significant advances in understanding regulatory pathways. In addition, the following elements should be an integral part of the study: •In silico prediction of miRNA targets must be experimentally verified using appropriate luciferase constructs and assays; •To exclude non-functional miRNA/mRNA interactions a reporter system including the whole 3'UTR of the target gene downstream the "luciferase" or GFP should be considered; •Any miRNA modulation should be validated by measuring the expression of the putative protein Please see our Guide for Authors for information on article submission. Bioresource Technology Reports is an online-only rapid-publication journal focused on the fundamentals, applications and management of bioresource technology. Like its companion journal, Bioresource Technology, Bioresource Technology Reports' mission is to advance and disseminate knowledge in all the related areas of bioenergy, biotransformations and bioresource systems analysis, and technologies associated with conversion or production. Bioresource Technology Reports publishes original articles, review articles, case studies and short communications. Alongside welcoming direct submissions, the journal will benefit from an Article Transfer Service which will allow the author(s) to transfer their manuscript online from Bioresource Technology thus saving authors time and effort spent on formatting and resubmitting. Catena is an interdisciplinary Journal of Soil Science that publishes papers describing original field and laboratory investigations and reviews on landscape evolution and geoecology with emphasis on aspects of soil science, hydrology and geomorphology. It aims to disseminate new knowledge and foster better understanding of the physical environment, of evolutionary sequences that have resulted in past and current landscapes, and of the natural processes that are likely to determine the fate of our terrestrial environment. Papers within any one of the above topics are welcome provided they are scientifically novel and of sufficiently wide interest and relevance. Reviews are expected to critically discuss and synthesize findings and approaches on topics falling within the core aim of Catena. Papers just summarizing literature results, and bibliometric analyses will not be considered. Comments are considered for publication only if they bring important scientific new elements and/or corrections on substantial aspects of previously published articles. They should be brief (no more than 2 journal pages i.e. ca. 2000 words). The following types of submissions will not be considered: Studies without explicit relation to landscape. Groundwater studies. Geobotanical, ecological and vegetation studies with no (or limited) relation to soil, hydrology, geomorphology or landscape evolution. Chemical laboratory experiments focussing predominantly on the identification/description of chemical and nano-surface reactions with no relation to the field situation. Field or laboratory studies for purely geotechnical purposes that are more appropriate for environmental engineering. Surface runoff or runoff studies having no relation to soil or geomorphic change (e.g., sediment transport would relate to surface processes and, thus, geomorphology). Microbiological studies with no relation to soil formation and landscape. Comparison of the performance of models (process-based, machine learning) and their robustness with no or only a minimal landscape-learning effect. Agricultural/crop production experiments without a solid relation to landscape. Purely geological studies. Purely Meteorological studies. Studies on ecosystem services and land use planning. Regionally oriented studies without novelty in approach or method. Studies comparing a range of statistical methods without reflection on the landscape-process causing performance differences between methods. The Editors-in-Chief do not accept presubmission enquiries and invite authors to check the Guide for Authors and the Aims and Scope to determine if a manuscript is likely to be of interest to the journal.
