This book presents methods for the exploitation and use of aggregate data for demographic inference, facilitating the development and testing of hypotheses with socioeconomic content through advances in the use of demographic time-series. The topics discussed include homeostatic demographic regime; peasant household organization and demographic change in lower Saxony; civil code and nuptiality; and primonuptiality and ultimonuptiality. The deaths, marriages, births, and the Tuscan economy; influence of economic and social variables on marriage and fertility in 18th and 19th century Japanese villages; and childbearing and land availability are also elaborated. This text also covers the American fertility patterns since the civil war; a repertory of stable populations; and methods and models for analyzing historical series of births, deaths, and marriages. This publication is recommended for demographists, historians, and sociologists in charge of analyzing behavioral models in historical demography.

An Exercise in Redeployment: The Report of a Trade Union Study Group discusses the report of a trade union study group that probed the cancellation of the TSR2 project, forcing some 2,000 employees of Bristol Siddeley Engines Ltd. to look for other jobs. The report shows how the study group saw and handled the problems; how they saw management's reactions; the efforts of the full-time trade union officials; the response from Ministry of Labor officers; and attitudes on the shop floor and in the office. Emphasis is placed on the shop-floor environment and the shop-floor negotiators. This book is comprised of 15 chapters and opens with a background description of the aircraft industry, followed by a discussion on the TSR2 and the thinking and expectations behind the British government's decision to cancel the project. An analysis of redundancy then follows with the group's thoughts directed towards the sort of questions which are not very often addressed. The negotiations that took place, including those involving severance pay and overtime, are considered. The extent of the experience of members of the study group in previous redundancies is also assessed. The last section gives some indication of what happened to some of the TSR2 workers who nominated themselves to leave under the voluntary system. This monograph will be of interest to trade union members and officials as well as labor policymakers.

Experimental studies of the organic amnesic syndrome are presented and memory disorders associated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are described. The role of amnesia in cerebral disease, the neuropathology of amnesic states, and psychogenic memory loss are also considered. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins with a discussion on experimental studies of the organic amnesic syndrome, along with certain associated studies of normal memory. The reader is then introduced to the link between amnesia and cerebral pathology; transient global amnesia and its clinical manifestations; the amnesic syndrome and its relation to Korsakoff syndrome; traumatic amnesia; amnesias of temporal lobe origin; and memory disorders following ECT. A neuropathological examination of the human brain in cases of amnesia is presented, and examples of the psychopathology of memory are provided. The final chapter analyzes amnesia from a medicolegal point of view. This monograph will be of interest to clinicians, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychopathologists, psychologists, and medicolegal practitioners.

Home Environment and Early Cognitive Development: Longitudinal Research presents the results of longitudinal studies in Canada and the United States that looked into the relationship between home environment and early cognitive development. The aim of these investigations is to determine the specific or process home environmental variables that correlate with and possibly regulate cognitive development during infancy and the preschool years. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book begins with a brief introduction to the issues investigated. Each of the following seven chapters is devoted to a longitudinal investigation, with emphasis on data presentation, analysis, and interpretation. The influence of home environment on cognitive development in young children of middle-socioeconomic... families as well as Mexican-American children is considered. Assessments of cognitive development are carried out using standard psychometric tests of intelligence; Piagetian-type measures of sensorimotor development; measures of language development; and measures of recognition memory for infants. The final chapter assesses the implications for intervention of the link between home environment and early cognitive development. This monograph will be of interest to psychologists and sociologists.

The relationship between love and pain, sexual impulse in women, and sexual selection are also discussed, along with sexual inversion. Divided into four parts, this volume first deals with the evolution of modesty and variations in modesty among different peoples and in different ages. The reader is then introduced to the phenomenon of sexual periodicity, with emphasis on menstruation and its relation to ovulation; the various physiological and psychological rhythms; and the predominance of sexual excitement at and around the menstrual period. Subsequent chapters focus on auto-erotism and spontaneous manifestations of the sexual impulse; the link between love and pain; sexual impulse in women; and sexual selection. The book also analyzes the theory and nature of sexual inversion before concluding with an overview of relevant subjects such as homosexuality, castration, psychoanalysis, and marriage. This monograph will be of interest to physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, criminologists, and educators.
