Game Theory and Applications outlines game theory and proves its validity by examining it alongside the neoclassical paradigm. This book contends that the neoclassical theory is the exceptional case, and that game theory may indeed be the rule. The papers and abstracts collected here explore its recent development and suggest new research directions.

Recent Progress of Life Science Technology in Japan discusses developments in cancer research technologies in Japan. In June 1983 an intra-cabinet panel of the Japanese Government drafted a 10-year strategy for cancer control, recognizing the importance of this field of research. A scientific research group was organized to comprise two sections—the first concerning the development and evaluation of DNA technologies, and the second on protein-related technologies. In the promotion of fundamental cancer research, the development and refinement of basic technologies for each component of the ""triangle of bio-sciences""—DNA, protein, and antibody—are essential, particularly in the elucidation of tumor-inducing and tumor-suppressing genes, tumor-specific antigens, and so forth. Part I of the book details the achievements of the first group in developing automated instrumentations for DNA sequencing. The second scientific research group worked on three major subareas: (1) gene transfer and expression technologies; (2) technologies for extraction, purification, and structural analysis of cancer-related proteins; and (3) technologies for analysis and synthesis of saccharide chains. Reports from these areas are respectively grouped in Part II, Part III, and Part IV of this monograph.

Foundations of Measurement offers the most coherently organized treatment of the topics and issues central to measurement. Much of the research involved has been scattered over several decades and a multitude of journals--available in many instances only to specialties. With the publication of Volumes two and three of this important work, Foundations of Measurement is the most comprehensive presentation in the area of measurement.

From the Foreword is infinite in multitude; and I mean by the sand not only that which exists about Syracuse and the rest of Sicily but also that which is found in every region whether inhabited or unhabited. Again there are some who, without regarding it as infinite, yet think that no number has been named which is great enough to exceed its multitude. And it is clear that they who hold this view, if they imagined a mass made up of sand in other respects as large as the mass of the earth, including in it all the seas and the hollows of the earth filled up to a height equal to that of the highest mountains, would be many times further still from recognizing that any number could be expressed which exceeded the multitude of the sand so taken. But I will try to show you by means of geometrical proofs, which you will be able to follow, that, of the numbers named by me and given in the work which I sent to Zeuxippus, some exceed not only the number of the mass of sand equal in magnitude to the earth filled up in the way described, but also that of a mass equal in magnitude to the universe.:

International Economic Policies and Their Theoretical Foundations

  • John M. Letiche

The literature on international economics has become excessively specialized. In selecting distinguished readings for this source book--including contributions by Nobel laureates such as Lawrence R. Klein, Arthur Lewis, James Meade, and Theodore W. Schultz--Professor Letiche breaks the mold. The essays concentrate on interrelation between theory and actual policy design, and this collection of classic pieces and recent economic contributions are a valued resource in universities and government offices.

Hearing Science and Hearing Disorders

Hearing Science and Hearing Disorders focuses on the nature of the processes in the inner ear and the nervous system that mediate hearing. Organized into eight chapters, this book first discusses the nature of speech communication, the extent of hearing problems, and the pathophysiology of hearing. Four core chapters follow, in which four areas of central importance to understanding hearing disorders and their effects are covered. These areas are assessment of auditory function, the scope for technological solutions, the nature of audio-visual speech perception, and the effects of deafness upon speech production. This book will be valuable to students; to academic and professional workers concerned with hearing, speech, and their disorders; and to scientifically or medically literate people in general.

Pornography and Sexual Aggression

Pornography and Sexual Aggression is an analysis of the various facets of pornography and sexual aggression and possible linkages between them. This 11-chapter work focuses on the causes of male aggression against women that may or may not occur within a sexual context, as well as on possible causes of sexual aggression that are not directly related to pornography. After a historical perspective on pornography research, this book goes on presenting the findings of a series of experimental studies that primarily focuses on the effects of violent or aggressive pornography fantasies, attitudes, beliefs, and aggressive behavior. The role of such factors as individual differences in aggressive inclinations, emotional states, and situational inhibitions in mediating the impact of aggressive pornography is also examined. These topics are followed by discussions of the ability of a theoretical model based on physiological arousal and emotional reactions, as well as the various individual difference variables that may affect reactions to pornography. Other chapters review the correlational data both within the United States and other areas of the world, along with some psychological and communicative factors that may cause sexual aggression. The concluding chapters describe the implications for legal change of some of the research, particularly on violent pornography. This book will prove useful to psychologists, psychiatrists, and behaviorists.

Cognitive Development and Acquisition of Language

Cognitive Development and Acquisition of Language provides information pertinent to the relationship between cognitive development and language acquisition. This book describes some of the ways in which cognitive growth is reflected in, and interacts with, the development of language. Organized into 13 chapters, this book begins with an overview of generative transformational grammar. This text then presents some of the methodological problems inherent in the investigation of language acquisition. Other chapters consider the argument that the child acquires English expressions for space and time by learning how to apply these expressions to the a priori knowledge he has about time and space. This book discusses as well a general hypothesis about the semantic knowledge by the child. The final chapter provides an integrative review of the research on language development and suggests some ways in which cognitive development and language acquisition are interdependent. This book is a valuable resource for psychologists and linguists.

Linguistic Theory in America

    9 7 8 - 1 - 4 8 3 2 - 9 5 4 3 - 5
Linguistic Theory in America, Second Edition focuses on the origin and development of the theory of transformational generative grammar. The book first elaborates on the state of American linguistics in the mid-1950s, the Chomskyan revolution, and the movement from syntactic structures to the aspects of the theory of syntax. Discussions focus on the incorporation of semantics into the model, revisions in the syntactic component, generative phonology, impact of generative grammar on other fields, syntactic structures, and structural linguistics. The text then takes a look at the rise of generative semantics and linguistic wars. Topics include late generative semantics, collapse and legacy of generative semantics, steps to generative semantics, and emerging opposition to generative semantics. The manuscript elaborates on the extended standard theory and approaches to syntax, including generalized phrase structure grammar, constraints on transformational rules, and constraints on surface structure and base rules. The text is a dependable source of data for researchers interested in the theory of transformational generative grammar.

This is a methodological guide to the use of plant opal phytolith analysis in paleoenvironmental and paleoecological reconstruction. It is the first book-length treatment of this promising technique, which has undergone rapid development within the past few years and is now beginning to be used with considerable success by paleobotanists who serve the archaeological and paleontological research communities. It will be mandatory reading for all paleobotanists, paleoecologists, and archaeological scientists.
