Homeland Security: The Essentials, Second Edition concisely outlines the risks facing the US today and the structures we have put in place to deal with them. The authors expertly delineate the bedrock principles of preparing for, mitigating, managing, and recovering from emergencies and disasters. From cyberwarfare, to devastating tornadoes, to car bombs, all hazards currently fall within the purview of the Department of Homeland Security, yet the federal role must be closely aligned with the work of partners in the private sector. The book lays a solid foundation for the study of present and future threats to our communities and to national security, also challenging readers to imagine more effective ways to manage these risks.

Twin Mythconceptions: False Beliefs, Fables, and Facts about Twins sheds new light on over 70 commonly held ideas and beliefs about the origins and development of identical and fraternal twins. Using the latest scientific findings from psychology, psychiatry, biology, and education, the book separates fact from fiction. Each idea about twins is described, followed by both a short answer about the truth, and then a longer, more detailed explanation. Coverage includes embryology of twins, twin types, intellectual growth, personality traits, sexual orientation of twins, marital relationships, epigenetic analyses, and more. Five appendices cover selected topics in greater depth, such as the frequency of different twin types and the varieties of polar body twin pairs. This book will inform and entertain behavioral and life science researchers, health professionals, twins, parents of twins, and anyone interested in the fascinating topic of twins.

Portfolio Optimization with Different Information Flow recalls the stochastic tools and results concerning the stochastic optimization theory and the enlargement filtration theory. The authors apply the theory of the enlargement of filtrations and solve the optimization problem. Two main types of enlargement of filtration are discussed: initial and progressive, using tools from various fields, such as from stochastic calculus and convex analysis, optimal stochastic control and backward stochastic differential equations. This theoretical and numerical analysis is applied in different market settings to provide a good basis for the understanding of portfolio optimization with different information flow.

Nuclear Structure Theory provides a guide to nuclear structure theory. The book is comprised of 23 chapters that are organized into four parts; each part covers an aspect of nuclear structure theory. In the first part, the text discusses the experimentally observed phenomena, which nuclear structure theories need to look into and detail the information that supports those theories. The second part of the book deals with the phenomenological nucleon-nucleon potentials derived from phase shift analysis of nucleon-nucleon scattering. Part III talks about the phenomenological parameters used to describe their various nuclear models. The last part of the book deals with the technology of nuclear structure theory. The book will be of great use to nuclear physicists who wish to gain a better understanding of the nuclear structure theory.

Politics and Economic Policy in the UK since 1964: The Jekyll and Hyde Years examines the economic policies that have been pursued by successive governments in Britain since 1964 and how such policies have been influenced by two sets of factors: politics and Keynesian demand management. The two basic failures of British economic policy since 1964 are highlighted, namely, the failure to establish a workable long-term incomes policy and the failure to achieve a high and stable rate of industrial investment. This book is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a background on the British economy until 1964, with emphasis on the economic problems faced by the country, including rising prices. The four basic objectives of economic policy to which both Labor and Conservative parties subscribe—full employment, a reasonably rapid growth rate, stable prices, and a satisfactory balance of payments—are discussed. The next chapter focuses on the Labor Party's 1964 Election Manifesto and how the economy fared from October 1964 to March 1966. Subsequent chapters evaluate the economic policies of the Labour government during the period April 1966-June 1970, including devaluation and incomes policy; economic policies adopted by the Conservative government from June 1970 to February 1974; and the country's economic situation since February 1974. The final chapter considers four factors—structural, technical, managerial, and political—that were responsible for much of what went wrong with the British economy since 1964. This monograph will be of interest to economists, political scientists, politicians, and economic policymakers.

A text which focuses on the relationship of local politicians and professional planners in the planning process, adopting a conceptual framework within which a series of case studies is analysed. It shows that where power is limited or diffuse, or liable to change, policy making can be uncertain or inconsistent. The book covers a wide range of planning policy, including transportation and land development and because the author has had both academic and political experience this gives his work a unique emphasis.

International Series of Monographs on Experimental Psychology, Volume 1: Pavlov's Typology presents problems of personality and the theoretical framework done in the U.S.S.R. Part 1 of this book deals with the development of Pavlov's theory of personality on experiments conducted on dogs and the problems encountered in studies of higher nervous activity in man and animals. These tests include investigation into the capacity of cortical cells of the test subject; the speed of movement and termination of the nervous process; and the speed of formation of positive and negative conditioned connections. Part 2 is the application of Pavlov's theory of types to individual differences in human beings. This part emphasizes that when using data from Pavlov's studies of animals, typological differences are considered when applied in man; that experimental methods are to be improved; and that operations definitions and concepts can change. Part 3 concerns experiments from Teplov's laboratory on the dimension of strength of the nervous systems in human beings. This strength is shown from the working capacity of nerve cells as 1) the strength of excitation the nerve-cell can endure when a stimulus acts on it in a single time and 2) the time that the nerve-cell can endure prolonged stimulus or at shorter but frequent intervals. The conclusions observed in strong subjects and weak subjects are then analyzed. This book can be appreciated by psychiatrists, psychologists, behavioral scientists, and students and professors in psychology.

European Environmental Policy: East and West focuses on areas of cooperation between Eastern and Western Europe in the field of environmental protection. This text explores the various economic and political circumstances in East and West within which the environmental problem arises, and which will determine the possibilities of reaching a solution. This book also examines results and opportunities still open for East-West environmental cooperation. This text has 10 chapters and begins with a brief presentation of the problem areas, followed by a survey of existing legislative and organizational arrangements. The next chapters analyze the forms of environmental cooperation practiced in Comecon countries; the influence of the structural characteristics of socialist economic integration on collaboration in the environmental field; and the causes of environmental problems that are specific to East and West. The limitations and possibilities of cooperation between East and West are then discussed, with emphasis on sub-regional cooperation between those countries faced with a specific transnational pollution problem, namely, the countries bordering the Baltic and the river Danube. This book will be of interest to planners and decision makers involved in environmental policy and protection, especially in Europe.
