Materials Technology, Volume 1: The Nature of Materials aims to fill the lack of textbooks about the nature of materials. The text contains various lessons regarding materials science and technology. The book begins by discussing the scope of materials technology, which includes biology, chemistry, economics, and psychology. The text then shifts to the properties of materials and discusses several information about atoms in a single material. A discussion on the pre-production and post-production of materials is presented in the entire chapter. The following chapter is about atoms, electrons, and protons. In the third chapter, the lesson shifts to bonds and materials. The last three chapters feature more information about a material, including its structures, chemical reactions, authenticity, and magnetic properties. The book targets those who are taking up an engineering technician course and gives readers a wider knowledge on the technology and nature of materials.

Materials Technology, Volume 2: The Fabrication of Materials deals with the processes of materials fabrication. This book focuses on systems used to transform raw materials into shaped states suitable for practical service. Principles of manufacture are discussed, along with the advantages and disadvantages of each method of fabrication and the diverse manufacturing sequences that are possible. The administrative aspects of manufacture are also considered. This volume is comprised of eight chapters and begins by introducing the reader to casting methods, including solidification casting, gravity-flow mold-filling, and pressurized mold-filling. Emphasis is placed on how materials that are reduced to a liquid state and then solidified can be prepared for service or formed to a useful shape. The chapters that follow explore powder preparation, mixing, compacting, and consolidation; mechanical means of fabrication; fabrication by bonding and machining; and the role of inventors and designers in fabrication. This volume concludes by assessing the economic aspects of fabrication, with particular reference to essential needs, conveniences, and luxuries. This book will be useful to first-year university undergraduates in engineering technician courses and more specialized technician courses.

The selection first offers information on coherence concept; an overview of coherence in the chromatographic movement of surfactant mixtures; and technological maturity of sorption processes and sorbents. The book then ponders on kinetic separation of air by pressure swing adsorption; conception of a new adsorption process for purifying landfill gas at the Kapiteltal Landfill Site in West Germany; and sizing of vacuum pumps for desorption in PSA systems. The manuscript takes a look at the evaluation of macroreticular resins as gas/vapor sorbents to rival active carbons and use of surfactant-enhanced carbon regeneration to remove volatile organics from spent activated carbon. Discussions focus on characterization of pores, development of porous polymers, cleaning, and resin preparation. The novel applications of continuous annular chromatography and chromatographic study of aqueous phase adsorption on activated carbon fiber with bacterial growth are also mentioned. Managing High-Tech Start-Ups equips engineers with a basic tool-kit for founding a high-tech manufacturing company. It gives would-be entrepreneurs insightful knowledge on how to attack such problems as developing a marketing plan, a sales plan, targets, pricing, hiring a sales force, evaluating marketing results, and correcting problems. The book emphasizes how to correctly identify a problem, so time is spent on its causes and not on its symptoms. Particular emphasis is placed on the marketing aspects of new engineering ventures, since marketing is usually not part of an engineer's experience, yet is so vital in the success or failure of a new venture. The authors take the reader step-by-step through the process of marketing evaluation and developing a product plan.

Aircraft Fatigue: Design, Operational and Economic Aspects contains the proceedings of the ""Symposium on Aircraft Fatigue—Design, Operational and Economic Aspects,"" held in Melbourne, Australia, on May 22-24, 1967. The papers explore the design and operational aspects of the fatigue problem in general aviation and transport aircraft, as well as the economic aspects of the fatigue problem as it affects both operators and manufacturers. This book is comprised of 21 chapters and begins with a description of an approach to structural reliability analysis based on order statistics and the expected time to first failure in a fleet of specified magnitude, along with its application to structures subject to progressive fatigue damage. The following chapters deal with structural load measurement and analysis; design and certification programs for a wide range of aircraft types including the Anglo-French and American civil supersonic transports; acoustic fatigue; and the design of joints. The detection of fatigue cracks in service and the effects of fatigue on the cost of design and operation of aircraft are also discussed. This monograph will be a useful resource for aircraft and aeronautical engineers as well as officials of civil aviation.

The Engineering of Microprocessor Systems: Guidelines on System Development provides economical and technical guidance for use when incorporating microprocessors in products or production processes and assesses the alternatives that are available. This volume is part of Project 0251 undertaken by The Electrical Research Association, which aims to give managers and development engineers advice and comment on the development process and the hardware and software needed to support the engineering of microprocessor systems. The results of Phase 1 of the five-phase project are contained in this first volume. It presents an overview of the technology of microprocessors themselves, of the development process, and of the range of development aids which will be covered in greater depth in later volumes. Also included are specific recommendations, facts, or guidelines on the choices to be made or procedures to be adopted. This volume is aimed primarily at the manager or other users responsible for microprocessor system developments, but who may lack direct experience in this field. It is intended to provide a decision framework and background material for management considering such developments for the first time, so that the special problems and key aspects of a microprocessor based development can be identified from the start.

Engineering Aspects of Shape Memory Alloys provides an understanding of shape memory by defining terms, properties, and applications. It includes tutorials, overviews, and specific design examples—all written with the intention of minimizing the science and maximizing the engineering aspects. Although the individual chapters have been written by many different authors, each one of the best in their fields, the overall tone and intent of the book is not that of a proceedings, but that of a textbook. The book consists of five parts. Part I deals with the mechanism of shape memory and the alloys that exhibit the effect. It also defines many essential terms that will be used in later parts. Part II deals primarily with constrained recovery, but to some extent with free recovery. There is an introductory paper which defines terms and principles, then several specific examples of products based on constrained recovery. Both Parts III and IV deal with actuators. Part III introduces engineering principles while Part IV presents several of the specific examples. Finally, Part V deals with superelasticity, with an introductory paper and then several specific examples of product engineering.
