Biological Monitoring in Water Pollution focuses on the processes, methodologies, and experiments involved in monitoring water pollution. Divided into six parts, the selection features the contributions of authors who have devoted time and energy in advancing biological monitoring to measure pollution in water. The first part is a review paper that focuses on the strengths of biological monitoring relative to the detection of harmful conditions. This part stresses that biological monitoring has received considerable attention. The second part deals with review papers on biological monitoring. The discussions focused on the identification of problem; the review of functional methods; community and ecosystem indices used in biomonitoring; and structure and function relationships relative to ecosystem stress. The third part covers the application of community structural analysis to biomonitoring programs. This part puts emphasis on the need to develop methods to identify community structures relative to the conduct of ecological research. Other parts of the selection are devoted to toxicity testing and discussions on the monitoring of waste discharges and introduction of chemicals to the environment. Experiments and models are presented to support the claims of the authors. The book can be a valuable source of information for those interested in the monitoring of water pollution.

Ebola‘s Curse: 2013-2016 Outbreak in West Africa is about hemorrhagic fever viruses, especially Ebola, its initial origin in central Africa 1976, its unprecedented appearance in West Africa in 2013. The book records in sequence and detective style how the initial outbreak of Ebola from the index case in rural Guinea traveled to Sierra Leone, the work and fate of those working in the Kenema Government Hospital (KGH) isolation ward in Sierra Leone. The book provides vignettes of the three main players involved with Ebola at KGH, Sheik Khan, Pardis Sabeti, and Robert Garry. Khan was the head of the unit, declared a national hero by his Sierra Leone government. He died fighting Ebola and was/is recognized in the USA by American societies by awards created for his historic work and death. Pardis Sabeti, a geneticist from Harvard and Broad MIT Institute, who was honored as a "Scientist of the Year" by Time Magazine and the Smithsonian Institute. Robert Garry, head of the operation to fight hemorrhagic fevers and Ebola, shuttled between Tulane University, KGH, and The White House to make aware through the press and others the dilemma and tragedy that was unfolding, and the need to obtain additional medical and health care support and supplies. Sabeti and Garry currently work with Oldstone on Ebola at KGH and thus personal communication and knowledge was/is available to the author for the book.

Dyneins: Structure, Biology and Disease, Second Edition, offers a broad view of dyneins mechanics, dysfunction, and disease, providing an overview of dyneins from structure and function, to dysfunction and disease. Since the first edition, enormous strides have been taken in understanding dynein structure, its organization in the axoneme, single molecule motor mechanics, and the consequences of defects for human biology, disease, and development. To account for these enormous strides, the second edition is extensively revised. Additionally, the coverage has expanded from 24 to 42 chapters, and is now housed in two volumes. Much of the expanded coverage occurs in Volume 2 which focuses on dynein dysfunction and disease, such as the role of dynein and cancer. Volume 1 covers the history and evolution of dyneins, dyneins in ciliary biology, and cytoplasmic dynein biology, while Volume 2 covers the structure and mechanics of dynein motors and dynein dysfunction and disease.

Immunity and Inflammation in Health and Disease: Emerging Roles of Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods in Immune Support provides a comprehensive description of the various pathways by which the vertebrate immune system works, the signals that trigger immune response and how fnew and novel nutraceuticals and functional foods, can be used to contain inflammation and also to boost immunity and immune health. Inflammation is a tool to fight pathogens and the vertebrate immune system has a very complex network of cells to achieve this. However inflammation that goes awry is also the leding cause of several diseases ranging from cardiovascular diseases to diabetes. This book covers the entire gamut from the various cellular players in the inflammation-immune response to its ramifications in terms of protection against pathogens as well as in onset of metabolic, aging and auto-immune related diseases. Finally, the balancing role of dietary nutrients between host defence and immune support is also showcased. The first three scetions explain the various components of the immune system and their modes of activation. The fourth section deals with the ramifications of a robust and execessive inflammatory response. The fifth section is focused on the association between nutrition and immunity and how deficiencies in certain nutrients may affect immunocompetence. The sixth section chapters represent a vision of paradigm shifts within the field and discusses possible future directions. This bool will be a valuable reference for researchers studying immune health either in academia, or in the nutraceutical or functional food industries. Product developers in nutraceutical, supplement, functional food, and health food companies will also appreciate the information presented here.

Poultry Quality Evaluation: Quality Attributes and Consumer Values provides a new reference source that covers these aspects with the same scientific authority as texts on traditional poultry meat quality values. The book's first section explores new developments in our understanding of how muscle structure affects the eating qualities of cooked meat. The second section highlights new techniques for measuring, predicting, and producing poultry meat quality and how these new techniques help us minimize variability in eating quality and/or maximize value. The final section identifies the current qualities of consumer and public perceptions, including what is sustainable, ethical, desirable, and healthy in poultry production and consumption.
