Journal of Government Information

As of 2005, title merged into Government Information Quarterly

The Journal of Government Information publishes original scholarship, studies, and evaluations related to the production, distribution, availability, selection, processing, and use of government information at all levels of government. This includes reports, analysis, and discussion of government information policy, current practice, new developments, and trends affecting the availability of and access to government information, as well as the related historical context of such activities. Also included are discussions of instructional issues and methodologies related to government information and its role in the educational process.

The Journal of Government Information is international in coverage, including articles about international and inter-governmental organization policies and practices related to information. The Journal provides a forum to present views and to illustrate how government-produced information is central to effective problem solving and to clarify and examine those ideas and procedures that hold the greatest potential for improving or hindering access to and use of government information.

The Journal of Government Information provides readers with valuable resource material to select and evaluate information related to government information access through a series of regular columns and features:

• Reviews (Ms. Aimee Quinn)
  Each issue includes reviews of monographs, documents, reference works, and electronic resources, including CD-ROM and World Wide Web resources

• Notable Documents Issue (John Maxymuk, Issue Editor)
  The last issue of each year (number 6) is devoted to notable information resources of the year from government agencies in Canada, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, and the United States as well as from countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Coverage also includes publications of the United Nations and other international or regional inter-governmental organizations.

• Recent Literature on Government Information
  Listings of recent literature on government information use, practices, and policy presented twice each year.

• Computerized and Networked Government Information (Juri Stratford, Editors)
  Focuses on government information from local, state, federal, international and inter-governmental sources.

• Bernard M. Fry Award
  Presented each year to the best article on government information.

Unsolicited articles are particularly welcomed. These articles, as well as invited papers, are subject to the Journal's refereeing process.
