Annual Review in Automatic Programming, Volume 2 is a collection of papers that discusses the controversy about the suitability of COBOL as a common business oriented language, and the development of different common languages for scientific computation. A couple of papers describes the use of the Genie system in numerical calculation and analyzes Mercury autocode in terms of a phrase structure language, such as in the source language, target language, the order structure of ATLAS, and the meta-syntactical language of the assembly program. Other papers explain interference or an "intermediate return" using ALGOL, the National-Elliot 803 Computer, and the MADCAP II. MADCAP II is A version of the automatic programming compiler for MANIAC II. One paper discusses the APT which serves as a common computer language for computational problems. Another paper explains SAKO which can bypass machine language almost entirely in the field of numerical and logical problems, particularly in programs using XYZ and ZAM II. A report of the Working Committee of the British Computer Society Discussion Group No. 5 concludes that COBOL is unnecessarily complex due to its close machine orientation. Computer engineers, computer instructors, programmers, and students of computer science will find the collection highly valuable.

Annals of the International Geophysical Year, Volume 37: Whistlers and Audio-Frequency Emissions presents the principal results obtained in Whistlers-East synoptic program publications. Although whistlers can be observed at any time of day, it is found that they occur primarily at night. The greatest incidence of whistlers during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) period occurred in both hemispheres in the geomagnetic latitude range 50-60°. The day-to-day correlation of whistler activity at geomagnetically conjugate stations was sometimes very low and sometimes remarkably high. This book specifically provides data of monthly summaries of whistlers and audiofrequency emissions observed and recorded on magnetic tape at the given stations during the IGY (1957 Jul - 1958 Dec). The summaries have been compiled from daily tabulations obtained by aural reduction of the recordings. The IGY agreements required only that monthly summaries be sent to the World Data Centers but for some stations, daily tabulations were sent instead. For most stations the daily tabulations and the magnetic tape recordings themselves have been preserved and are held by the persons having supervision of each station and the aural reduction of data there from. This book will be of value to geophysicists and space scientists and researchers.

Advances in Classical Trajectory Methods, Volume 2: Dynamics of Ion-Molecule Complexes is a seven-chapter text that covers the considerable advances in the experimental and theoretical aspects of ion-molecular complexes, with particular emphasis on the dynamics and kinetics of their formation and ensuing unimolecular dissociation. This text also considers the development and testing of theoretical models for these formation and decomposition processes. The opening chapters discuss photoelectron photoion coincidence, ion cyclotron resonance, and crossed molecular beam studies of metastable ion-molecule complexes formed in ion-molecule collisions. These experimental studies involve comparisons with the predictions of statistical models, such as the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus and phase space theories, and comparisons with the reaction dynamics predicted by classical trajectory calculations. The succeeding chapter describes the double-well model for ion-molecular reactions taking place on a potential energy surface with a central barrier that separates two potential energy minima. These topics are followed by reviews of the quantum chemical calculation and reaction path Hamiltonian analysis of SN2 reactions, the transition state theory for ion-dipole and ion-quadrupole capture, and the capture and dynamical models for ion-molecule association to form a complex. The remaining chapters consider the temperature dependence of ion-molecule reactions, which proceed on a surface with many potential energy minima, specifically the ability to establish asymptotic limits for the reaction efficiency dependent upon the number of potential minima and the above relative probabilities. This book is of great value to experimental and theoretical chemists and physicists.

Please note this is a Short Discount publication.Process planning involves creating detailed plans of the manufacturing steps and equipment necessary to produce a finished part.Using the variant method, CAPP groups families of parts by a structured classification and coding plan. This report summarizes the state–of–the–art and future trends in the area of CAPP.The computer is a vital part of the process planning function, which includes two different approaches. One is called the variant (similar part) method of process planning and the other is generative (expert system–based). Both will produce similar process plans. Most computer applications, however, are of the variant type, because the software is easier to develop and new process plans are based on previous ones.

Abridged Thermodynamics and Thermochemical Tables: SI Units is a compilation of different tables that can be applied in the study of thermodynamics, physical chemistry, and gas dynamics. The book includes tables for the thermodynamic properties of different substances such as water, saturated water, steam, saturated dichluorodifluorom, dichluorodifluoromethane (freon-12), and air at low pressure; enthalpies of various gases and vapors, various hydrocarbons, as well as other various substances; logarithms of equilibrium, critical constraints for various inorganic and organic substances, different line functions for perfect gases with specific heat, and transport properties of various gases at atmospheric pressure and steam at various pressures. The text is primarily recommended for students, as its contents have been put together with the ease of students' use have been taken into consideration. However, those working in the fields who require the use of these tables as well as those who havethe occasional need for data would also find this book as an excellent reference.

GPU programming in MATLAB is intended for scientists, engineers, or students who develop or maintain applications in MATLAB and would like to accelerate their codes using GPU programming without losing the many benefits of MATLAB. The book starts with coverage of the Parallel Computing Toolbox and other MATLAB toolboxes for GPU computing, which allow applications to be ported straightforwardly onto GPUs without extensive knowledge of GPU programming. The next part covers built-in, GPU-enabled features of MATLAB, including options to leverage GPUs across multicore or different computer systems. Finally, advanced material includes CUDA code in MATLAB and optimizing existing GPU applications. Throughout the book, examples and source codes illustrate every concept so that readers can immediately apply them to their own development.

Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths is a continuous series of books covering all aspects of rare earth science, including chemistry, life sciences, materials science, and physics. The book's main emphasis is on rare earth elements [Sc, Y, and the lanthanides (La through Lu], but whenever relevant, information is also included on the closely related actinide elements. Individual chapters are comprehensive, broad, up-to-date critical reviews written by highly experienced, invited experts. The series, which was started in 1978 by Professor Karl A. Gschneidner Jr., combines and integrates both the fundamentals and applications of these elements and publishes two volumes a year.
