Comparative Mammalian Immunology: The Evolution and Diversity of the Immune Systems of Mammals provides a review on the current knowledge of mammalian immune systems from a comparative viewpoint. This reference encompasses recent work on the immune systems of marine mammals, bats and marsupials in addition to other lesser-known species, with the immune systems of humans and laboratory mice as components of chapters on primates and rodents respectively. The book also makes use of the most recent studies on the genomic sequences of the mammals to identify both common and unique features of each mammal's immune system. The book elucidates the complex, but coordinated and controlled series of interactions involving cells and molecules that has evolved to protect the host against disease. Mammals consist of a highly diverse group of animals in which the immune system has been subjected to a variety of selective pressures. This is reflected in differences in the organization and function of their immune systems, and is especially seen in those gene families characterized by complexity and polymorphism.

Cancer glycobiology is a blazing hot area of cancer research with aberrant post-translational glycosylations on lipids and proteins considered critical for cancer development and metastasis.  The NIH/NCI Alliance of Glycobiologists for Cancer Research is a consortium of (10) tumor glycobiology laboratories funded to investigate how cancer-associated glycans (CAG) impact the development and metastasis of cancer.  The hope of this momentous effort is to discover CAGs for use as novel biomarkers to detect early-stage cancer or its aggressive behavior or, alternatively, as novel molecular targets with the promise of a curative approach to cancer therapy.  The mission of the ‘Alliance’ is to study structure and function of CAGs in cancer development and to provide clinically useful biomarkers for detecting cancer early or the potential of metastasis.  This charge has stimulated extensive collaborations across US and International institutions to accelerate discovery of glycan-based biomarkers to the forefront of NCI's efforts to diagnose early-stage cancer and provide curative anti-cancer therapies.  The main goals of these research efforts are: 1.  To identify and study how cancer-associated glycans functionally impact cancer growth and metastasis2.  To identify cancer-associated glycans that can serve as biomarkers for the detection or progression of cancer3.  To develop cancer-associated glycans as novel therapeutic targets for the treatment and cure of cancer This volume consists of (9) chapters, one from each funded laboratory, that reviews new methods and mechanisms  highlighting glycoconjugates and their roles as cancer biomarkers and/or anti-cancer therapeutic targets.

**Selected for Doody’s Core Titles® 2024 in Immunology**Introductory Immunology: Basic Concepts for Interdisciplinary Applications, 3rd Edition, is a completely updated, revised, and expanded concise, conceptual approach to understanding the immune systems as a primary defense to maintain health and homeostasis. This expanded version includes the aspects of microbiology and related immune defense mechanisms important in combating disease, as well critical components related to the field of vaccine development.Immunology as a subject is no longer confined to the realms of "immunology" or "microbiology" studies. Indeed, the subject matter has become increasingly important to understand complex mechanisms found within a wider range of biological systems. This book aims specifically at educated audiences who do not have a deep understanding of medical, biochemical, or cellular knowledge. The overall text will present concepts that portray a comprehensive picture of the natural defenses to infectious agents as well as provide an introduction to mechanisms that lead to autoimmune dysfunction. In addition, immunological diseases will be detailed, with the goal of allowing the readers to gain sufficient knowledge to make sound choices for clinical decisions to affect treatment outcomes. This new edition expands on the existing chapters, focusing on updating the previous text. It has been expanded to include knowledge on effector mechanisms addressing components inherent within cellular responses that are either newly discovered, or missing from the previous edition. It has an extra emphasis on aspects related to mechanisms important in combating microbial agents and critical sections on how vaccines protect against pathogenic invaders to limit associated pathology. The goal is that Introductory Immunology will become the preferred provider of core knowledge in immunology to build a foundation to explore components of the human immune system that work together to confer and understand dysregulation that causes clinical diseases. This book serves as a basic platform to define therapeutic interventions by:creating appreciation for components of the human immune system to work together to confer lifelong protection;providing a core knowledge in immunology to build a foundation to explore mechanisms involved in clinical disease, and defining functional aspects of immunological terms to permit the reader easy access to comprehend specific topics;presenting introduction to complex immunological concepts in a concise and easy manner that relates to clinical disease;breaking down all of immunology into manageable, logically digestible building blocks, and providing a map to explore overlapping mechanisms of immune protective responses;providing a platform to readers without medical, biochemical, or cellular expertise to understand and appreciate how immunology controls homeostasis and protects against pathogens.

Autoimmunity, COVID-19, Post-COVID-19 Syndrome and COVID-19 Vaccination covers all aspects of what is perhaps the most dramatic health crisis in the history of modern medicine. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) raised major concerns about the association between the virus and various autoimmune manifestations. Over 15 distinct autoantibodies and above 10 different autoimmune diseases were found to develop in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, evidence about recovered COVID-19 patients demonstrates that persistent systemic symptoms, which are believed to have an autoimmune-related mechanism, do exist. As it is of great importance to recognize those autoimmune manifestations of COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 syndrome to properly cope with their outcomes in the ongoing pandemic and the long-term post-pandemic period, this book fulfills a vital need in the medical community.

Immunological Implications and Molecular Diagnostics of Genitourinary Cancer updates on recent accomplishments, unifying concepts, and future challenges in the study of tumor-associated immune cells, emphasizing genitourinary cancers. The presence of inflammatory immune cells in human tumors raise a fundamental question: How do cancer cells avoid destruction by immune attack? In principle, tumor development can be controlled by cytotoxic innate and adaptive immune cells, however, as tumors develop from neoplastic tissue to clinically detectable tumors, cancer cells evolve different mechanisms. This book covers research on the immunological implications of genitourinary cancer with a comprehensive view, especially surrounding diagnosis and cellular mechanisms.
