La 2ª edición del Tratado de Medicina Geriátrica. Fundamentos de la atención sanitaria a los mayores aporta el core de conocimientos necesarios para los profesionales de habla hispana, siendo una herramienta imprescindible para la formación de geriatras, así como para la actualización de profesionales. Contenido eminentemente clínico y adaptado a la realidad asistencial tanto de España como de Latinoamérica que cuenta con la participación de destacados expertos en esta área tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, contando con la colaboración de especialistas procedente de Estados Unidos, Canadá, México, Costa Rica, Colombia, Perú, Reino Unido, Italia, Países Bajos y Australia. Este tratado se divide en un total de once grandes bloques, cada uno de ellos coordinado por un destacado experto en la materia abordada. Como novedades en esta nueva edición cabe señalar la inclusión de dos nuevos bloques de contenido: “Modelos de atención sanitaria al anciano en el mundo” y “Cáncer y envejecimiento”. Igualmente se ha ampliado la galería de vídeos, especialmente en las áreas de valoración y dermatología, para presentar así los conocimientos y las habilidades necesarios para la atención sanitaria a este grupo poblacional. Este título viene a complementar el título Manual de atención paliativa en pacientes con enfermedades crónicas: Aspectos generales coordinado también por el Dr. Xavier Gómez Batiste, director del Observatorio Qualy. Centro Colaborador de la OMS para Programas Públicos de Cuidados Paliativos. Se trata de un manual con un enfoque práctico que tiene como objetivo abordar todas las dimensiones de la atención paliativa utilizando para ello propuestas prácticas que, en su conjunto, permitirán conocer los principales elementos implicados en la atención de este tipo de pacientes. La información se presenta de una forma clara, con la idea de que la obra sirva de guía para los profesionales implicados en la atención de pacientes con enfermedades crónicas. Entre sus contenidos, se abordarán las características clínicas, los criterios clínicos y pronósticos, el papel de los tratamientos específicos, el control de síntomas y los dilemas ético-clínicos frecuentes de los distintos tipos de patologías y condiciones catalogadas como enfermedades crónicas. Un espacio importante dentro de este manual tendrán también las patologías como la insuficiencia cardiaca, la insuficiencia respiratoria, la insuficiencia hepática, la insuficiencia renal, las demencias, el cáncer, problemas en pediatría, etc. Contenido dirigido a profesionales asistenciales (médicos, enfermeras, psicólogos, trabajadores sociales), líderes clínicos y organizativos, y planificadores de todo tipo de servicios de salud y sociales, especialmente aquellos que atienden a personas con enfermedades avanzadas.
