The range of appropriate contributions is wide, and includes papers on establishing appropriate mathematical models and their numerical solution in all areas of mechanics. The journal also includes articles that present a substantial review of a field in the topics of the journal.With the modern use of computers and numerical methods to model and solve problems, the traditional boundaries between the fields of solid/structural mechanics and fluid mechanics hardly exist any longer, and multiphysics problems are solved that involve all aspects of mechanics. The word 'structures' must therefore now be interpreted in a broad sense including solids, fluids and multiphysics.Compute... & Structures publishes papers in these fields that either present novel and quite general techniques, or offer substantial new insights into important methods. If a paper presents novel techniques, some comparison with known advanced methods is necessary. If a paper is to provide substantial new insights into advanced methods, then this can be achieved by strong numerical experiments, some mathematical analysis, and/or comparisons with well-designed physical test data. In either case, the paper must contribute to advancing the state of the art.The focus of Computers & Structures is on having an impact on the practice of simulations in mechanics as found in many industries and research endeavours, including the fields of engineering, such as civil and environmental, mechanical, biomechanical, automotive, aeronautical, and ocean engineering, and including the various fields of the sciences.In these areas, papers are sought on the automatic solution of mathematical models of 'structures' in the broadest sense, possibly including phenomena of multiphysics, multiscale, and uncertainties. The International Journal of Solids and Structures has as its objective the publication and dissemination of original research in Mechanics of Solids and Structures as a field of Applied Science and Engineering. It fosters thus the exchange of ideas among workers in different parts of the world and also among workers who emphasize different aspects of the foundations and applications of the field.Standing as it does at the cross-roads of Materials Science, the physical Sciences, insightful Mathematics, and advanced Engineering, the Mechanics of Solids and Structures is experiencing considerable growth, in part as a result of recent technological advances. The Journal, an international medium of communication, encourages and fosters this growth by encompassing articles in all branches of fields that use mechanics to solve problems, ranging from fundamental physical, mathematical, and numerical aspects to the more applied. We aim always for the new, novel and original, substantive, inventive and enduring. Problems in linear and nonlinear material behavior and failure and on the response and failure of structures form the backbone of the journal covering both traditional and more modern aspects: included are inelastic material and structural behavior, instability and localization in solids and structures, mechanics of soft and biological materials and structures, micro- and nano-mechanics, architected and lattice structures, smart materials and structures, and multi-physics problems. Works in related fields such as heat transfer, wave propagation, modal analysis, optimization, concrete and geological materials, and the development of numerical methods are now supported by dedicated journals, but will be considered provided they are of broad interest and represent significant progress. Articles that make intelligent and insightful use of AI to enhance or supplement, but not replace, the laws of physics will be welcome.Emphasis is placed on contributions, analytical, experimental and numerical, which appear to be of permanent interest to research workers and engineers in the field. Papers that are merely illustrations of established principles and procedures, or either design oriented or geometry-specific, even though possibly containing new numerical or experimental data, will generally not be published. When outstanding advances are made in existing areas, or when new areas have been developed to a definitive stage, special review articles will be considered by the Editors. No length limitations for contributions are set, but only concisely written papers are published. Brief articles are considered on the basis of technical merit. Discussions of previously published papers are welcome.We expect submitted articles to be authored by the researchers themselves. The Journal was founded in 1952 by Rodney Hill, who was its Editor-in-Chief until 1968. It continues to enjoy a pre-eminent position in the field of solid mechanics.The Journal aims to publish research of the highest quality and lasting significance on the mechanics of solids. Its scope is broad, ranging from fundamental mechanics concepts to analysing novel phenomena and applications.Solids are interpreted broadly and include natural and synthetic materials and structures. The approach can be theoretical, experimental, or computational. This research activity sits within engineering science and at the nexus between the allied areas of mathematics, material science, chemistry, biology, and physics.The Journal's main purpose is to foster a scientific understanding of all issues impacting the mechanical response of solid materials and their relations to the underlying microstructure and physical mechanisms. Its content reflects the current state of the discipline in analysis, experimental observation, numerical simulation, and data analysis.Authors are encouraged to consider the significance of their contributions to the field of mechanics and the implications of their results, in addition to describing the details of their work.
