Smart Materials in Manufacturing is a peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal. We publish original research papers and authoritative reviews that drive innovation in the manufacturing and processing of advanced materials with embedded functionality. The focus is on existing and emerging manufacturing technologies that process novel materials and systems. Typically, these offer a variety of enhancements and capabilities, including, but not limited to, structural hierarchy, controlled phase formation, improved and bespoke properties for target applications, shape memory and morphing ability, stimuli responsiveness, sensing and actuation. We are interested in papers that characterise these constructs and assess their ability to achieve real-world functionality.

The scope of the journal embraces the entire workflow underlying the manufacturing of active materials. Topics of interest sit at the crossroads of materials science and engineering and include:

  • Metals and alloys

  • Ceramics and glasses

  • Polymers

  • Composite materials and multi-material systems

  • Natural and bio-based materials

  • Shape memory and morphing materials

  • Lattices and scaffolds

We welcome submissions that explore all aspects of these materials and structures, including:

  • Materials chemistry

  • Design and process optimisation

  • (Multi-)materials and (multi-)physics modelling

  • Surfaces, coatings, and interfaces

  • Characterisation of materials and components

  • Interrogation of responses and signals emanating from the constructed materials
