It is the official journal of the International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA) and aims to publish high-quality and impactful articles covering significant advances across all disciplines related to Quaternary research.
The Journal's mission is to promote innovative research which appeals to the broad audience of the global Quaternary community and contributes to addressing broad international scientific questions. The journal accepts submissions for Research Papers, Review Articles, Short Communications and welcomes Special Issue proposals.
Submissions related (but not limited) to the following research topics are welcome:
Past climate change: palaeo-data and/or model-based reconstructions towards enhanced understanding of Quaternary climatic variability and abrupt events.
Humans and biosphere: the evolution and diversity of humans and their ecological environment during the Quaternary alongside the dynamic relationship between them.
Terrestrial and marine stratigraphy and geochronology: the study of the Quaternary Period through a stratigraphical approach and the application of geochronological methods that support establishment of timeframes and (cross-continental) correlations.
Surface and tectonics processes: investigations of the Quaternary records of geohazards and their relationships with environment and humans.
Applications of novel analytical tools: demonstration of physics-, chemistry-, biology- or computer science-based innovative methods and techniques applied to Quaternary science.
Submissions that include innovative cross-disciplinary research combining palaeoecology, archaeology, anthropology, geology and related cultural processes are also encouraged.
Review Articles that summarize the state-of-the-art in various fields or report cross-disciplinary advances in Quaternary science are welcome and warmly received.
Quaternary International also publishes Special Issues organised by leading scientists and Early Career Researchers. Special Issues address major scientific questions in contemporary Quaternary research, including those related to international research projects or special events such as workshops, symposiums etc. Leaders of INQUA funded projects and INQUA Fellowship holders are strongly encouraged to propose Special Issues on their research topics.
Manuscripts that present local studies, case-studies and new data are welcome if they provide evidence for broad scientific discussion or highlights correlations in the framework of a multi-regional or global Quaternary significance.
Manuscripts that focus on pre-Quaternary data and events or on recent changes in climate, environment, and agriculture (within the last 20 years) will be considered for publication only if the authors indicate and clearly address the relationships with and contributions to Quaternary research.
