The Periodontology Journal is an Open Access Journal of global resonance, publishing a broad spectrum of basic experimental, translational, epidemiological and clinical research studies in the field of periodontology.
The aim of the journal is to promote and disseminate the scientific understanding of periodontal diseases for enhancing clinical practices and raising the appreciation of the impact of oral health on systemic health. The primary scope of the Journal gravitates towards periodontal diseases, but studies on their associated peri-implant diseases are equally welcomed. The Journal’s target audience is dental researchers, clinicians and educators alike, maintaining interest for the medical field and keeping approachable and accessible to public audiences when possible.
The Journal publishes primarily original research studies that contribute meaningfully to the advancement of periodontal science with ethical integrity, through human-relevant data, clinical research or innovative methodologies. We encourage experimental research that prioritizes translational methods alternative to animal experimentation, in line with the 3R principle (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement). While the Journal primarily aims to publish original research, review papers on timely periodontal topics may also be considered, in prior communication with and approval by the EiC.
The Journal covers a wide range of topics on periodontal and peri-implant diseases, including:
Etiopathogenesis: Investigations into immunological, inflammatory, microbiological mechanisms underlying disease initiation and progression.
Pathophysiology: Studies on tissue healing, repair and regeneration in the context of disease treatment.
Diagnosis, prevention, and treatment: Clinical and translational research aimed at improving disease detection, management, and therapeutic outcomes.
Epidemiology and population research: Analysis of environmental, behavioural, and biological risk factors contributing to disease prevalence and distribution.
Systemic links: Research on mechanistic connections between periodontal/peri-implant diseases and systemic health conditions.
Technological innovation: Development and evaluation of novel diagnostic tools and interventional strategies for disease management.
Patient feedback and experience: Insights into patient-reported outcomes, satisfaction, and quality of life in relation to oral healthcare.
