Materialia is a multidisciplinary journal of materials science and engineering that publishes original peer-reviewed research articles. Articles in Materialia advance the understanding of the relationship between processing, structure, property, and function of materials. The focus of Materialia is on the general field of materials science and engineering, as well as interdisciplinary connections to the field. The scope of Materialia is broad and includes metallurgy, inorganic materials, organic materials, biological materials, functional materials, nanomaterials, optical materials, composite materials, and more.
The articles we seek to publish must be well motivated starting from a general perspective on why the work was conducted. We expect also the article to be coherent, and typically to include a discussion that explain in details the mechanisms relating processing, microstructure and properties, based on new experimental or theoretical evidence, or supported by the literature. The discussion should highlight how the presented work really advances the field. For purely computational or theoretical studies, we also expect that the results will be deeply compared with experimental evidence published in the literature. For manuscripts that are reports of results, devoid of any depth of scientific discussion, they will be rejected without being sent for review.
Materialia is part of the Acta Materialia, Inc. family, which includes the three partner journals Acta Materialia, Scripta Materialia, and Acta Biomaterialia. The wide scope of Materialia encompasses all three partner journals; authors of articles that are judged unsuitable for a particular partner journal, for example on the grounds of fit, may instead be offered transfer of their manuscript for consideration in Materialia. Such a transfer may occur either pre- or post-peer-review. This offers an efficient and flexible route for the publication of articles that report otherwise high-quality research but do not find a home in the other journals of the Acta Materialia, Inc. family. Materialia furthers the mission of Acta Materialia, Inc. by additionally supporting the dissemination of knowledge within the materials science community.
Materialia publishes full-length research articles, review articles, and letters (short communications). In addition to receiving direct submissions, Materialia also accepts transfers from Acta Materialia, Inc. partner journals. Materialia offers authors the choice to publish on an open access model (with author fee), or on a subscription model (with no author fee).
