IREF publishes high-quality theoretical and empirical research across the broad fields of economics and finance. Its aim is to provide an outlet for scholarly work that advances our understanding of economic behaviour, markets, institutions, and policies at both domestic and international levels with broad global implications. The Journal welcomes contributions that develop new theoretical insights, present rigorous empirical analyses, or explore policy-relevant applications at the intersection of economics and finance. By doing so, it seeks to foster communication between academics, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working in economics, finance, and related disciplines.

As one of the largest general-interest outlets in the field, the Journal receives a high volume of submissions each year, spanning diverse areas such as: macroeconomics and monetary policy; microeconomics and industrial organisation; development and international economics; corporate finance; financial markets and institutions; behavioural economics and finance; asset pricing; climate finance; regulation and financial stability; technological change and innovation (including FinTech, digital assets and AI); econometric methods; and applied policy analysis. IREF particularly encourages work that addresses contemporary global challenges, provides fresh perspectives on longstanding economic and financial questions, or bridges across subfields to advance interdisciplinary dialogue.
