Description
Global and Planetary Change publishes high-quality research addressing all aspects of Earth System Science. The journal aims to advance multidisciplinary understanding of planetary change and processes relevant at the global scale. It considers the geological and historical past, present-day conditions and future scenarios, using observational records, experiments and modelling.
The journal welcomes original research papers and authoritative reviews. Relevant topics include processes from the deep Earth and lithosphere to the near-surface; changes in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and cryosphere; climate change, the carbon cycle and sea-level fluctuations; global ecology, biogeography and extinction; planetary boundaries and ecosystem resilience; and global-change impacts on food security, water resources and urban sustainability.
Manuscripts should be relevant to the global scientific community or have wider implications for global-scale problems. The journal particularly welcomes work with significance beyond a single discipline. Regional or process-oriented studies are welcome when they contribute to understanding the Earth System or have implications for the global scientific community or wider global-scale problems. Authors should present their findings in a way that is accessible to a broad international readership.
Subject areas
Atmospheric Science, Climate Dynamics and Earth System Modelling Atmospheric processes, climate dynamics and Earth system modelling across past, present and future climates, including simulations, projections and model development.
Carbon Cycle, Ecosystems and Global Environmental Change The carbon cycle, terrestrial ecology, soils, vegetation, food security, urbanisation and other aspects of global environmental change.
Cryosphere and Cryosphere-Linked Terrestrial Systems Glaciers, ice sheets, permafrost, polar and high-latitude hydrology, and terrestrial systems directly linked to the cryosphere, including cryosphere-related soils, biogeochemistry and carbon fluxes.
Geodynamics (including Tectonics) and Cenozoic Terrestrial Environments Deep Earth processes and tectonics, together with the evolution of terrestrial environments during the Cenozoic.
Pre-Cenozoic Palaeobiological and Palaeoenvironmental Evolution The evolution of life, climate and environments during the Precambrian, Palaeozoic and Mesozoic, including palaeobiological studies, palaeoclimate, palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and associated environmental change.
Ocean Biogeochemistry and Oceanography (Past, Present and Future) Modern, past and future ocean systems, including physical, chemical and biological oceanography, marine biogeochemistry, palaeo-oceanography, sea-level change and associated marine environmental responses.
