Ecohydrology & Hydrobiology – The Journal of Transdisciplinary Ecohydrology

Ecohydrology & Hydrobiology is an international peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing Transdisciplinary Ecohydrology (TEH) as the science of interactions among hydrological, ecological, biogeochemical, and societal processes across multiple scales, from molecular and organismal levels to ecosystems, catchments, river basins, and the biosphere.

The journal promotes TEH not only as a scientific discipline, but also as an integrative framework for enhancing the sustainability potential (WBSR) of catchments and the biosphere through the harmonization of ecosystem processes, engineering solutions, and societal priorities. The concept of enhancement differs from restoration or protection and originates from medical terminology, where it refers to achieving a better health status than before illness. In the context of ecohydrology, enhancement refers to increasing the resilience, carrying capacity, and sustainability potential of ecosystems and the biosphere.

A central objective of the journal is to support the transition from fragmented and sectoral approaches toward holistic, evolutionary-ecosystemic perspectives in water and environmental management. In this context, the journal recognizes water as the primary regulator of biodiversity, ecosystem processes, nutrient cycling, bioproductivity, ecosystem services, and resilience to climate change.

The journal particularly emphasizes research that contributes to understanding and applying the concept of “dual regulation” between hydrological and biological processes, and translating this knowledge into innovative management solutions. This includes the development of Advanced Nature-based Solutions (ANbS), ecosystem biotechnologies, and hybrid systems integrating ecohydrological approaches with hydroengineering and other innovations.

The mission of the journal is aligned with the objectives of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP), the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), European Commission policies and strategies, and other regional sustainability concepts and initiatives. The journal supports integrative, problem-solving, and policy-oriented science capable of addressing the growing complexity of environmental challenges and planetary boundaries, including climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, pollution, and ecosystem degradation.

Areas of particular interest include:

  • ecohydrological processes and interactions among water, biota, nutrients, sediments, pollutants, and energy flow across scales;

  • hydrobiological foundations of ecosystem functioning, resilience, and biodiversity;

  • ecosystem regulation of hydrological and biogeochemical cycles;

  • environmental flows and the ecological functioning of aquatic and wetland ecosystems;

  • ecohydrological modelling and integrated catchment assessment;

  • biodiversity conservation and enhancement through hydrological and ecological management;

  • enhancement of water retention, nutrient retention, and ecosystem resilience under climate change;

  • Advanced Nature-based Solutions (ANbS) and ecosystem biotechnologies;

  • hybrid solutions integrating hydroengineering infrastructure with ecohydrological and blue-green systems;

  • phytotechnologies, microbial processes, phytoremediation, adsorption processes, and bio-based water treatment technologies;

  • urban ecohydrology and water-sensitive urban systems;

  • restoration, regeneration, and enhancement of catchment sustainability potential;

  • decision-support systems, environmental policy, governance, and sustainability transitions;

  • socio-ecological resilience, ecosystem services, and adaptive management;

  • transdisciplinary methodologies linking science, policy, and society;

  • development of low-cost, high-efficiency methods and systemic solutions that help bridge the financial gap in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals;

  • educational, cultural, and governance dimensions supporting sustainable water management.

The journal particularly encourages research that contributes to the enhancement of:

  • Water security and water quality;

  • Bioproductivity, biocomplexity, and biodiversity;

  • Ecosystem services for society;

  • Resilience to climate change and anthropogenic pressures;

  • within the integrative framework of WBSR + CE + LPG (Water; Bioproductivity/Biocomplexity/Biodiversity; ecosystem Services; Resilience; Culture and Education; Law, Policy and Governance).
