Description

Accelerating atmospheric shifts are redefining grape production worldwide in complex and often unpredictable ways, disrupting long-established practices while opening the door to new possibilities. Viticulture and Climate Change examines how rising temperatures, irregular rainfall patterns, and increasingly frequent extreme events influence cultivation outcomes, including vine seasonal development, berry composition, and overall vineyard performance. It presents a forward-looking panorama that translates scientific insight into applied guidance, enabling the effective implementation of adaptive and sustainable grape-growing practices.

Rather than treating individual factors in isolation, the text adopts a whole-system view. The volume is organized to follow the vineyard lifecycle, from establishment through routine operations to long-term planning, with case studies aptly embedded throughout. It addresses variety and rootstock selection, spacing, training systems, soil care, canopy handling, water use, and innovative inputs. Dedicated sections explore frost, heatwaves, drought, flooding, and hail scenarios, alongside appropriate responses such as pruning adjustments, shading solutions, and protective materials. Emerging topics—such as manipulation of ripening dynamics for low- and no-alcohol wines, carbon cycling, and renewable energy integration—are also considered.

Advances in sensing, mapping, automation, and modeling are presented within interconnected digital platforms, offering new ways to monitor conditions and guide interventions. Biotic threats from pathogens and insects are discussed in the context of variable climatic pressures, with emphasis on tolerance and robustness-enhancing measures.

Drawing on a broad body of research and experience by a leading expert in the field, Viticulture and Climate Change interprets findings with clarity and purpose, transforming technical information into accessible knowledge with practical relevance across diverse regions in support of improved real-world, cost-effective decision-making.

Stefano Poni

Stefano Poni has been Full Professor of Viticulture at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Piacenza, Italy, since 2014, where he also currently serves as Coordinator of the MSc in Sustainable Viticulture and Enology. He earned his bachelor’s degree cum laude in Agricultural Science from the University of Bologna in 1985. At the same university, within the Department of Horticulture, he was a PhD student and subsequently a research assistant until 1998. He received his PhD in 1991 with a thesis on the relationship between leaf age and key environmental and plant factors, which involved a research period at the Geneva Experiment Station (Cornell University, USA) under the supervision of Prof. Alan N. Lakso. His current research focuses on grapevine physiology, vineyard management, and strategies to optimize wine grape quality. He is a member of the Italian Academy of Vine and Wine and has contributed extensively to international scientific publishing as an author, editor, and reviewer for international journals and conference proceedings. He has been an invited speaker at major international conferences across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Australia. His contributions to the field have been recognized with several awards, including the Perdisa Prize, the Enotecnici Prize, the Rudolf Hermanns Foundation Prize, and the Best Paper Award from the American Society of Enology and Viticulture.
