Description
Thorp and Covich’s Freshwater Invertebrates: Keys to Hexapoda of Southeast Asia and Subtropical China, Vol VI, is the first comprehensive, fully illustrated guide to identifying the aquatic insects and springtails of one of the world's richest and most threatened freshwater regions. Written by leading specialists from Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Americas, it brings together current taxonomy and recent discoveries in keys to both aquatic adults and immature stages, from mayflies, dragonflies and water bugs to the many families of aquatic beetles and true flies.
The book is designed for anyone who needs to identify a freshwater insect. That includes students, taxonomists, and freshwater ecologists. It also serves environmental consultants and government agencies that use insects to assess water quality, public health workers dealing with mosquitoes and other disease vectors, and conservation managers working in rivers, lakes, wetlands and peat swamps. Clear keys and plain English also make it accessible to naturalists and citizen scientists. With rapid development placing freshwater habitats across the region under growing pressure, this volume provides an essential foundation for research, monitoring and conservation.

Key features
Key features
- Offers thorough geographic coverage for the identification of aquatic insects throughout Southeast Asia and subtropical China
- Includes taxonomic keys that uniformly proceed among chapters and taxa from higher (order in most cases) to the lowest possible level (usually genus) available for specific regions
- Provides comprehensive, introductory sections on ecology and methods to collect and preserve specific species
- Presents the contributions of acknowledged world experts in their taxonomic groups
Readership
Readership
Undergraduate and graduate students in colleges and universities, along with their professors. In addition, the market will include companies and government agencies involved in environmental analyses.Outside this geographic region, the market should consist primarily of professors and students doing research in this region along with students taking field classes there or working in museums

Catherine M. Yule
Editor
Catherine Yule is Professor of Ecology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia. For more than 35 years she has undertaken pioneering research on the ecology and biodiversity of freshwater ecosystems in Southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea and Australia. Her PhD research on stream ecology on Bougainville Island was followed by work as an environmental consultant in Indonesian Borneo, and then many years at Monash University Malaysia, where she introduced thousands of students to tropical aquatic ecology. Her interdisciplinary research covers tropical and subtropical rivers, lakes and wetlands, with particular emphasis on peatlands, from the peat swamp forests of Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo to the subtropical peatlands of Queensland. She previously co-edited Freshwater Invertebrates of the Malaysian Region (2004) with Dr H. S. Yong.

Editor
Dr. James H. Thorp is an emeritus professor and senior scientist at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS, United States). Prior to 2001, he was a distinguished professor and dean at Clarkson University, department chair and professor at the University of Louisville, associate professor and director of the Calder Ecology Center at Fordham University, and research ecologist at Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. He received his Baccalaureate from the University of Kansas and Masters and PhD degrees from North Carolina State. Prof. Thorp has been on the editorial board of three freshwater journals and is a former president of the International Society for River Science. His research interests run the gamut from organismal biology to community, ecosystem, and macrosystem ecology. While his research emphasizes aquatic invertebrates, he also studies fish ecology, especially food webs related. He has published more than 150 research articles and 120 books, including five volumes so far in the fourth edition of Thorp and Covich’s Freshwater Invertebrates.
