Description

The Biomechanics of Osseointegration offers a comprehensive, evidence-based exploration of the biomechanical, anatomical, and biological principles essential to safe and effective use of dental implants. By integrating core sciences with clinical applications, it equips both current and future practitioners with the tools to deliver long-term success in implant therapy. From fundamental concepts such as bone biology and stress-strain relationships to advanced topics like finite element modeling, fatigue testing, and real-world clinical implications, this work bridges the divide between theory and practice. Readers gain deep insight into the biomechanics of standard, short, pterygoid, and zygomatic implants across varying bone types, loading conditions, and anatomical challenges. Examined are long-term histological findings from retrieved human implants, unpacking the reasons behind the success of design elements such as the Cone Morse connection. Grounded in both research and practical examples—including case studies and data spanning three decades—the importance of connecting basic science with clinical expertise is highlighted. Designed primarily for dentists considering the integration of implantology into their practice, as well as postgraduate students in Periodontology, Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery, and Biomedical Engineering, The Biomechanics of Osseointegration also serves as a valuable resource for undergraduate dental and biomechanical engineering students who are entering the field with limited formal education in implant science. With an interdisciplinary approach and emphasis on biomechanics and biology, it provides a critical foundation for anyone committed to advancing in the field of dental implants—ensuring their work is not only innovative but also grounded in safe and effective treatment principles.

Key features

  • Presents the relationship between the level of implant insertion (crestal and subcrestal) and the level of bone stresses and strains in the crestal bone studied under Finite Element Analysis, and subsequent possible bone resorption
  • Covers Biomechanics of Standard, Short, Pterygoid and Zygomatic implants and its clinical relevance in different anatomical locations (Bone Type 1 to Type 4), in different loading situations (delayed or immediate loading), or in different clinical conditions (e.g. splinted or non-splinted)
  • Analyzes and discusses short- and long-term clinical results of the peri-implant hard and soft tissues with the use of Biconometry (i.e. a Cone Morse implant-abutment connection and a Cone Morse prosthetic cap and abutment connection)

Douglas Deporter

Dr. Douglas Deporter has been a full-time staff member in the Discipline of Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto since 1976. Following completion of his PhD in 1974 and a 2-year stint as a post-doctoral fellow in London, England studying experimental pathology, he was awarded a prestigious 5-year Research Scholarship from the then Medical Research Council of Canada along with his appointment as assistant professor at Toronto. He has published over 120 papers, many of which were focused on short and ultra-short implants, culminating in a book on this topic published by Quintessence in 2018. He has lectured extensively on the international level and is currently preparing a book on his latest topic of interest, immediate molar dental implants. In total, he has co-edited 4 textbooks on implant dentistry, two with Wiley and two with Quintessence. He and Professor Piattelli have known each other for over 30 years.
