Sailaxmi Gandhi

Dr Sailaxmi Gandhi is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Nursing at NIMHANS (INI), Bengaluru. She is also a nursing consultant in the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (PRS) and in one of the Adult Psychiatry Units. She has received many awards, including two from the President of India – once at undergraduate level and later the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Nurse Educator award in 2014. She has taken the lead role in training nurses in psychiatric nursing in India, in collaboration with the WHO India and the MoH&FW. She was the principal investigator in a project to promote the mental health of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic funded by the WHO India and in collaboration with the Nursing division of MoH&FW, which led to creation of 400 nursing master trainers as well as training of 2000 nurses in the country. She has led several extramural projects funded by organizations such as WHO India, ICMR, Bihar state government, etc. She has initiated a holistic health clinic in the Adult Psychiatry OPD as well as a (Recovery Oriented Services) ROSes Café for rehabilitation of persons with mental illness in the PRS at NIMHANS. One of her primary areas of interest apart from psychiatric rehabilitation and stress management is nursing manpower development in the country. She has authored 160 articles published in international and national indexed (many of which are Pubmed indexed) journals, and has written several books, manuals and chapters.
