Description

Substance Use Disorders and Behavioral Addictions: Neurochemical Mechanisms and Clinical Implications offers an in-depth exploration of the neurochemical foundations of addiction, addressing both substance-related and behavioral disorders. This volume is essential for neuroscientists, psychiatrists, and pharmacologists seeking to understand the complex neurobiological pathways involved in addiction. It covers key neurochemical systems such as dopamine, glutamate, serotonin, and endocannabinoids, and examines their roles across a spectrum of disorders including nicotine, opioids, alcohol, stimulants, cannabis, psychedelics, sedatives, caffeine, antihistamines, and behavioral addictions like gambling, gaming, pornography, and binge eating. This content synthesizes cutting-edge preclinical techniques—such as optogenetics and neuroimaging—with clinical models like cue-reactivity and pharmacogenomics, providing a translational perspective that bridges research and practice. The purpose of this book is to fill existing gaps where neurochemical insights are often isolated from clinical application, especially in the context of rising addiction rates globally and emerging treatments like psilocybin and neuromodulation. It aims to equip researchers and clinicians with current, practical knowledge to develop innovative interventions, improve diagnostics, and personalize treatment strategies. Whether used as a reference for research, clinical decision-making, or advanced coursework, this volume offers a vital resource for advancing understanding and management of addiction in diverse settings.
